This is such a neat idea! I'm sure it is a real treasure trove for people who either already have a contractor lined up to help them install items, or for people much more creative than I am. I love that this is a home of sorts for pieces of historic homes, for scraps that would have just ended up in a junk yard. After weeks of oogling over the beautiful items posted on the facebook, I just HAD to come in and check it out for myself! I love to DIY and this is definitely the place for me. I almost felt like I was in a dream. Sinks and cabinets and tiles and chairs and just whatever you could ever hope for! I ended up getting 3 chairs for an upholstering project. They don't carry fabric, but pointed me in the direction of a craft&DIY store around the corner. Everything is so neat and organized, I don't know how they do it. I have not been to CJ for many years. I recently started following them on Instagram and decided to go check them out again in person. This is a very cool place where people can donate items that they did not use when they were building a house or flipping a house. If you need doors or hardware or anything to replace in an older house, this is where you need to go. They had the same cabinets that I put in my kitchen 10 years ago as well as the same cabinets that were in my home originally. It's kind of crazy but cool. Not to mention that the deals are out of this world. One example would be that they had Glass Mulch. It was $35 dollars for a 50lb bag. I looked it up online and it was $35-42 for a 10lb bag. That's forty pounds more for the same price! My favorite thing though was the Amazon Paint. It is recycled paint and they offer some really nice colors. The prices were fantastic! It's a great way to recycle for a steep discount. I was also surprised at their tile selection. I recently bought tile to redo my second bathroom and let's just say that I paid a WHOLE LOT MORE than if I had come here. When I redo my main bathroom I am definitely shopping here. First some facts, then my thoughts. Construction Junction is the only low-end architectural materials salvage business that I know of in Pittsburgh. The Habitat ReStore in New Kensington may be the closest alternative. CJ sells windows, doors, hardware, tools, tile, paint, lumber, brick, fixtures, appliances, lighting, cabinetry, and other used building materials. Some of what they carry is high-end, expensive, rare, and unusual. Most of it is mid- (dozens of dollars) to low-priced (a few dollars). They have a crew who harvest these items, and they accept a lot of donations. They are a non-profit backed by the Pennsylvania Resources Council, and operate out of a very large warehouse in Point Breeze near the East End Co-op, with a large parking area (which is also home to a city recycling drop-off). Their building also contains Free Ride, a volunteer bike-repair shop; Steel City Biofuels, an educational/promotional outfit focusing on biodiesel; the Pillow Project; and Creative Reuse Pittsburgh. The large industrial complex behind CJ houses Penn State's Ag extension, a yard waste drop-off, an e-waste handler, and probably a dozen other businesses. Now my opinion. CJ is the best place of its kind in this area. It beats buying new hands-down, lots of people love them, and they have a very friendly staff. Like most salvage yards, some staff will charge the sticker prices, others will give you a good deal -- and they're open to haggling if you're a big spender. I'd say their best deals are on old bathroom fixtures ($5 sink, $10 toilet, etc). On the downs side, their prices are usually too high for me, and their selection is not very robust or well-organized. They're lacking some creativity running their business, and it shows in how they waste their enormous warehouse space and have been losing money for most of their existence -- reselling donated materials no less! So I think CJ's idea people could use a kick in the behind -- but it's the best we've got going in Pittsburgh right now. (And Free Ride, at the end of their parking lot, is unconditionally awesome!) read more

I'm really disappointed in Construction Junction. I used to come here for years and got some really cool things at very affordable prices. The last few times I've been in, I've been absolutely appalled at how much they want for most things. You can buy new things for cheaper sometimes! I like the sustainability aspect of reusing old materials but unfortunately they're capitalizing on the fact that sustainability and reuse is now trendy. Usually not worth my time to patronize this place anymore, which is sad because I like to do my part to reduce waste. read more

Coming to Construction Junction is always an awesome experience. You never know what you might find here. I have come here searching for specific things just as radiator covers and random pieces of wood for shelving and have found both items easily. They have door knobs, doors, toilets, lamp shades, windows, desks, tables, kitchen counters- they have it all. Keep in mind it's all used- some of the items are more worn than others. It can be a little overwhelming because they have so much, and it's all so random. I find that it's best to come here with specific things in mind and with specific measurements as well. Not only do I like coming here to shop, but I have donated items before and it's always very effortless. The staff is really friendly and will help you unload or load items with a smile. Check out the art store behind Construction Junction- they have used art supplies and it's a dream come true for anyone who loves to craft or loves creating in general. They also have a bike shop that takes old bikes, which is located next to the art store. The bike shop has odd hours, but Construction Junction will take the items if the bike shop is closed. My landlord was going to throw her bike away and me being an avid recycling nerd, googled where I could recycle a bike in Pittsburgh and this was the only thing I could find. The folks at Construction Junction took it off my hands and I knew it was in good hands. I am so thankful for this place and know I will be visiting here a lot when I buy a house. read more

I love this place! You never know what your going to find! They have all kinds of things, that are usually slavaged from a home or business. Kitchen cabinets, tables, mantels, windows, doors, tons of doors! If your some one who likes to fix old things or make new things out of old stuff, you must go here! I picked up an old dresser today for $10 its needs the drawer fixed and to be refinished, but when its done its going to look beautiful! They have old appliances , bathroom sinks and toilets, lighting fixtures, wood, paint, counter tops, flooring materials, some tile, etc., etc.! read more

You never know what you are going to find. The paint is absolutely phenomenal... Wonderful money saver and decent selection of colors. You can do great crafty projects with their tile selection (May not be enough to tile a large area but good for bathrooms or mismatch). I bought an amazing new vanity there that would have cost me triple elsewhere. So fabulous! read more

Great place to find furniture and other pieces to upcycle. We've lucked out a few times and picked up flooring for our den, tile for bathrooms and some furniture pieces. Can find a materials at a fraction of what it would cost new. Lot of unique things come through, too. read more

After trying to work with a few other groups to pick up our old office furniture and having a heck of a time coordinating various logistical issues, the folks at Construction Junction made it so easy! This is Recycling Central... Whether you're building a house more-or-less from scratch, remodeling a home, or into refinishing, you owe it to yourself to visit CJ on a regular basis. This is where I found my front door (with sidelights), a huge multi-pained window, and restorable old hutch - all of them with wavy glass! - two pedestal sinks, a stainless steel kitchen countertop with integral sink, a pair of exterior French doors, lighting fixtures, slate sidewalk stones.... This place even has recycled paint! I used it on my basement walls 'cause it's inexpensive (I needed five gallons). It looks great and seems to hold up well, even under adverse conditions. read more

I love this place so much! It makes me want to redo the kitchen and bathroom floors in every apartment I rent with vintage tile. Nowhere else in Pittsburgh can you find recycled building materials next to old furniture waiting to be given a new lease on life and mirrors as large as an entire wall. This is a great place to find restoration pieces for our old farmhouse. Just make sure that you measure your doors/windows twice before going. We live about an hour and a half away, so it's important we have a list and measurements before we set out. I can't wait to return! read more

What a great store! I'm not really adept at doing home repairs, but man is this a fun shop anyway! I can only imagine how much DIY people enjoy CJ. Wow. They frequently have furniture--some bizarre pieces alongside of cool antiques. They have a huge selection of sinks, doors, windows, tiles, paint, bricks, toilets, office supplies. You never know what you'll find. Sometimes a church or store will close and donate its contents to CJ, so you might see pews, stained glass, display cases, and mannequins for sale at super cheap prices! This place is a hidden gem. You NEED to go. I often find myself wondering through CJ finding random things I can turn into artwork. Although my visits are mostly for fun, CJ offers a lot to those who are looking to reuse items they may need for their house. They have random awesome things like basketball flooring and steel pipes, which made for a great new coffee table. The staff is extremely friendly and hard working and CJ is dedicated to donations to charity and the community. I like to frequent this place every month. What a great find. This is a great place to buy re-purposed old windows, office furniture, old industrial sinks, old wood, door knobs, electrical stuff and more for construction projects. Found a matching IKEA office cabinet with one I had for only $20. It was originally $450 and IKEA no longer made it so it was a great find! read more

This place is so much fun and prices are fantastic. I go in always with every intention to find a fabulous piece of furniture to bring my bedroom together. Clearly it just hasn't been donated yet, but I'm not giving up! I buy lots of "shiny fun stuff" to be all artsy-crafty with and I LOVE IT. The only thing I miss is the random paint they used to sell, now I know its all new paint containers. I'm sure its some legal mumbo jumbo, but its ok. Definitely worth checking out! read more

This is a fun place, not just functional. What an eclectic mix of fixtures like old door knobs to bigger home improvement items, antiques and some art. I think if Andy Warhol was living he would love to see the big Marilyn Monroe artwork, the "I Love Pittsburgh" sign, the big fish art donated by a local artist, the mannequins displayed in around the hot tub....It is more than a place to find home improvement products. It is art. I never thought seeing so many colors of toilets or toilet tanks together (many pastels) would remind me of that. It definitely has the feel and look of Pittsburgh and from the mannequin displays it shows that the employees have personality plus! read more

I'm remodeling my 1900s two story home and my favorite shopping place is Construction Junction. I found many items for my home there that I could not find anywhere else. No, they do not carry every thing I need when I need it since they depend upon "what comes in", but overall they are my best source for "old time things." We love to go to Construction Junction (CJ) we have gotten some great deals. One of our best deals is we got a stove for my mother-in-law it was like new she needed a new stove and it only set up back $75.00. However I am disappointed with their web site. They don't update it, you can not tell what they have by looking at their web site, you have to go to the store to actually see what is available. Trim can be very expensive, we were rehabbing a house and needed more trim to match the existing trim, I was able to find it at CJ along with a window which I paid 35.00 for. Another house we just finished needed some trim, they had just gotten about 200 pieces of trim most in great shape, I was short of money so I only got what I needed, other wise I would have bought it all. I bought a 3 piece dorm set last week (bed,chest,desk and I was supposed to get a chair for the desk ) I didn't have a truck when I bought it ,so they would store it for a week for $5. Not bad. When I paid the guy behind the counter said they were bundling sets in the back ,that they were all pretty much the same and decent quality,like the ones on the floor. Great ,thanks ,fine with me. Yesterday I rented a van to pick up my stuff. I had a surly,rude guy take my receipt ,disappear for a while ,then come back and was really irritated that I hadn't moved my van. Well you didn't tell me to,and not sure how this process works. Then what really set him off is that I was there alone and he had to move my stuff. I am able to help move ,I just couldn't do it alone. But he grabbed piece by piece and got it on the truck. At the end I said thank you and I got a final glare. Getting the stuff home ,it looked like they took the 3 most banged up pieces and bundled them for me. Not anything like the pieces on the floor. I get it it's used,it's as-is ,but did I have to get all 3 pieces in that condition and also be made to feel like a piece of crap because I need help ? I try never to be that person who finds issues with everything,but I left there feeling embarrassed and upset. I didn't need to be treated that way , Just thought you should know. read more

I love this place. I've come here for the odd bits and bobs--brass casters for a piece of antique furniture (25 cents each), vintage milk glass door knobs ($30), wardrobes for a closet-less room ($40 each), a set of four wooden chairs ($10 each), etc. If you buy something larger, they will hold it for a small fee and then the crew will load it into your truck for you. If you're into old houses, reserve at least 30 minutes to get through the whole store and you won't be disappointed. read more

just got off the phone with a lady from construction junction. normally, i have had the best experiences there. . . all have been very cooperative and helpful. but, i guess they are so successful that they are becoming arrogant. here's the rub: my hubby sent me a picture of a chandelier they had; i did not see the picture until 30 minutes later; by then he had left the store. i called to BUY the chandelier over the phone. this has been done before (we WERE construction junction junkies). the lady adamantly refused to help me. she adamantly refuesed to even listen to a description of the fixture! she gave the following excuses:" well, if you have been here in the last 12 years, you know how this place works"; "I can't go back there and try to find out what you want"; "i am the only one on the floor"; "this is first come, first serve"; "if your husband comes in and it is still here, then we'll sell it to him" "how will i know which one it is - we have so many back there..." .... i could hear the smirk in her voice as she enjoyed blowing me off. . . i even offered to send her the picture my husband sent me via email - she refused. keep in mind, i wanted to pay for the item. my husband cannot go back to construction junction today. . . most likely the item will be gone. . . it would have been nice had this sales agent been more helpful - especially when it was clear how badly i wanted to buy the fixture. she did not express any concern whatsoever for my requests: (like, so sorry, i can't help you at the moment, please call back and i'll try to accomodate; give me a brief description and i'll try to find it... etc.). sometimes, even if you can't accomodate someone, it's how you say it that makes all the difference. construction junction will implode if it begins to treat its customers indifferently. read more
