I came into this place to get a intoxilock on my car. When I dropped off my car they said it will be a couple hours and they will call me when it's done. I left and realized that they didn't even ask for my number to call me when it's done so I went back to give them my number. When I went back I asked how long until it is done and they said "it's not a priority and it doesn't pay the bills so we arnt sure when it is going to be done". Several issues when I've come to this place. Today was the last straw. When I had called and asked about an oil change the guy acted as if it be no problem. So I show up he said it will be about two hours. He said it's a first come first serve situation. So I said OK. I come back two hours later. He said it'll still be 30 minutes. I find this highly unacceptable and unprofessional. Will not ever go back to this company. They also put an alternator in that I didn't need in my car and asked me after the fact why I had that done. (I'm that case like an O'riel's told me I needed so partially my fault). But you would THINK they'd ask you beforehand why it's being done. Do not recommend them!! read more

I've owned cars for over 25 years, and Jim at University Hills Conoco is by far the most honest and helpful mechanic that I have ever dealt with. He is always willing to look under the hood and give you a quick diagnosis, and he always helps you understand what must be done for safety purposes compared to things that don't need as immediate attention. His staff is usually able to quickly help with smaller problems, like air in the tires, at no cost, and can give you a ride home if you need one after dropping off your car. Every repair comes with a coupon for a free car wash, so your car always looks better when you're done. Gas at University Hills Conoco is a few cents more expensive than other stations nearby, though, so I don't usually fill up my tank there unless I also need to have fluids or check air. read more

Thus place was recommended to me by a friend and I had my doubts because it's a mechanic shop in conoco, but these guys are totally amazing. They took a look at my car and told me what the problem must likely was right on the spot. Unfortunately they are so popular that I had to wait until the next day to get it fixed but they got me in right away. The price is unbeatable and I think this has to do with the volume of cats they repair. I walked out of a turbo repair for far cheaper than I thought was possible. "An honest mechanic" is exactly what you get here. Jim and team here is best independent mechanic I've ever come across. Jim was recommended to me by a neighbor, and it's clear that a lot of others end up there through similar positive recommendations. We had a 10 year old VW that regularly needed work, and I always got very clear feedback, and never once felt like I was being sold something I didn't need, or being taken advantage of. They get quick access to parts if needed, and always let you know upfront what cost will be before doing anything. Service was always great too -they would always pick us up at our house, and drop off if needed. We even called them once when out of town when we were having problems starting the car, and they had us hold the phone to the engine when starting and attempted to diagnose! Really recommend going to these guys if your car is outside of standard dealer maintenance. read more

Just want to add that Kevin and Gary are awesome, too! No one ever makes you feel silly for asking too many questions and they are very patient. Kevin helped me when my battery died and Gary helped me today. I wish I didn't have to go here so much (who wants to have to deal with getting their car fixed) but every time I do, they are fair and honest. my car was dying out a couple months ago and I was closest to a car place in Cap Hill so I tried my hand there. They wanted to charge me $120 just to look at the car so I called this Conoco to see what they had to say. They didn't charge me anything to look at my car and the total for work and labor was less than what the other place would've charged to, as mentioned, simply look at it. I've been brining my car to Jim for repairs for almost 3 years now, and although it seems strange to bring your car to gas station to get fixed, I will never take it anywhere else. Jim has always been honest and fair to a level I never thought I would find in auto repair. An example: A service light came on one day and I took it into Jim to have a look. After his examination he told me "Well, it is a bad sensor, we can certainly fix it, but it would be expensive to take apart the steering column, and the sensor is redundant, so I think its best to hold off and we will fix it if we are in there for another reason." Total charge for this: $0. Later on down the road he had to replace the intermediate shaft in my steering column, and he replaced the sensor for nothing more than the price of the part, which was cheap. Another example: I had a heater blower go out in the middle of winter (awful). I thought it would be easy to replace, so I bought the part and tried to do it myself, but I couldn't get the new motor in place because of clearance issues. I took it to Jim and he said "We can get it done for $100." Fine, lets do it, I don't want to drive to work wearing a parka anymore. He had the same problem I did and had to take apart a decent amount of my dashboard to get the new motor in. I know for a fact that he had someone working on this for about two days. When I went to pick up my car he refused to accept any more than the $100 he had originally quoted me. I TRIED TO PAY HIM MORE AND HE WOULDN'T TAKE IT. So I bought a few other things I needed from his shop, thanked him, and left with a big smile and a warm car. I could list examples like this all day but what matters is that Jim is fantastically honest, very fair on price, and does fantastic work. If you have a problem on something he repaired he will ALWAYS back up his work. I send everyone I know to Jim and they all come back to me with positive reviews. He really does take the sting out of auto repair. read more

Jim was recommended to me through a friend when my car was "diagnosed" as needing lower ball-joint replacement ($664), stabilizer link pins ($179), tie rod ends ($278), and an alignment ($89) by Pickering's Auto Service in Lakewood. I wasn't about to drop $1,200 on my car - which is probably worth as much, honestly - like a sucker without calling around and getting other pricing. In addition to all this work, I also needed my front brake rotors replaced, drive belts replaced, spark plugs, etc. for infinity. Of all these things, I was most stressed about that $1,200 (which was apparently the SOURCE of the clicking noise which prompted me to bring in my car in the first place). I called and specifically asked for Jim in order to get pricing on the lower ball joints, links pins, tie rod ends, and alignment. I don't even think I got further than lower ball joints before Jim asked me, "What kind of car do you have?" After telling him my make and model, he says,"Those types of problems aren't very common in your car at all. Now I'm not saying that might NOT be the problem, I'm just saying it's typically not a problem. I've replaced ball joints on maybe, oh, 2 vehicles in the last 3 years. Why don't you bring it in, we'll put it on a lift, and we'll see what we can find." So maybe I'm way more naive than I thought because, honestly, the idea that these lower ball joints did NOT need to be replaced didn't really even cross my mind; I guess that's the false sense of honesty one buys with Pickerings' $60 car diagnosis. I brought my car in today along with Pickerings' diagnostic sheet that listed all the work that needed to be done along with cost. After all was said and done, Jim told me that the $1,200 work job was not needed. The only thing that Pickerings called correctly were the brake rotors, drive belts, and spark plugs. Jim beat their pricing on these 3 things by about $180. Pickerings also suggested a $198 battery renew service; Jim said, "Your battery is only 3 years old. All you need is to clean your terminals. We'll do that for nothing since you're getting work done." Jim also recommended a $27 fuel injection cleaner fluid to Pickerings' $202 fuel injection service. He said that the fuel injection cleaner fluid is about equally as good (maybe just slightly less) than an entire fluid flush/exchange. I had only come in with the intent of getting my car looked at and not worked on. However, after dealing with all the employees, talking to Jim (old and young), and seeing the sheer number of people coming in that early (geez, I guess the public likes dealing with skilled mechanics with integrity and fair pricing - who would've thought?!), I decided to get my car fixed then and there. It took them 2 hours and my total bill came in at $415 dollars. So if you crunch the numbers, here's how much Jim and his crew saved me: $1,200 because I didn't need all that work $180 on my brake rotors, belts, and spark plugs $148 by adding fuel injector cleaner instead of having entire system flushed $198 because my battery did NOT need to be replaced and they cleaned my battery terminals at the cost of $0 Needless to say, I have found my mechanic; Jim and his crew will be recommended by me to anyone who needs auto work done. Old Jim told me that they have been in business for 50 years and it's clear to me why they are. I hope they're in business for another 250 years. I live in Edgewater, but my car mechanic works in University Hills! No matter if I have to drive it or tow it, that's where my car goes from here on out. ***As a side note, the noise that Pickerings said would cost $1,200 to fix turned out to be a loose lower arm joint that simply needed to be tightened (which Jim did). read more
