Irish Rail does as Irish Rail pleases but this review is for Connolly Station where I spent some time waiting for my train and then when I arrived back into Dublin. Much of the station is smooth and easy and flat. I had no trouble rolling my suitcase along and the escalators worked just fine. There are some platforms that are stairs or elevator (lift). Ticket vending kiosks support multiple languages and default to English. On a Sunday morning, a choice of coffee shops inside the station though they are all street side which means you'll need to make your choice before scanning your ticket. I misjudged my train and got to spend 45 minutes people watching. There is a WC but that is also street side. Plenty of folks in highvis answering questions and pointing people to platforms. read more

The station is fairly empty at 6 am but there one shop open for coffee and pastries. The bathroom is not the dirtiest but they can use some attention. There is security in the station so you do feel secure and no riff raft hanging about. read more

The kiosk system is not user-friendly whatsoever so beware! If this has a major update and was user-friendly I'd definitely leave a five star review but instead we had to get in line and order our tickets through a human being. LOL! But good to know that your ticket is available ALL DAY long just in case you miss your train. Found out the hard way and thought we had to buy a new ticket but the conductor said "Your ticket is good for just that day if you miss your train. Just has to be the same destination the ticket was purchased for." Hope this helps you when you arrive to the train station. Recommend the higher-end seats. read more

The Hilton Garden Inn I was staying at is located a 5-7 min walk from this transportation hub (bus/ train/ tram) and so ended up using Connolly Station a fair bit. Overall I found there was a really great connection between tram and railway, especially with easy to understand and good location of signage. Waking into the train station, straightaway you spotted a good number of automatic ticket machines as well as as an Info desk plus a ticketed desk with staff. One day while using Connolly, we spotted an original Steam engine, with old fashioned sign proclaiming it was from Dublin to Belfast. Dublin Connolly is one of the main railway stations in Dublin, Ireland. It services DART (commuter train) as well as long distance train to other cities (including northern Ireland). I came here to take a train to Belfast by Enterprise service. Coffee shop was open when I arrived at 7am but everything was closed when I returned around 10:30pm. They had a bar at the station but not sure how late they are open as they were closed when I came back. Restroom was clean and it was free. No wifi but once I got on board on Enterprise, the train offered free Wifi, which was surprisingly pretty steady. Signs were there throughout and it was easy to follow. When I arrived at late night, they had 4 taxi waiting outside and it was easy to catch a taxi back to my hotel. I was going to use mytaxi app to order a taxi for me but my tour guide said they always have taxi there outside. It is a nice station to come even if you don't travel. I liked the architecture of this station and free and clean toilet is always helpful. read more

Connolly is like Heuston's slightly more slappery little sister. While Heuston only has the more refined intercity rail cars that depart every few hours, Connolly has no problem letting any commuter or DART train onto its seedy platform. Trains are constantly whizzing in and out of here agressively and with all the shoving and pushing and queing, you dont really give the place an actual gander most of the time, which is a shame, because it's actually a really nice building. If you're going into town, hop off the DART at Connolly and get a Luas into town, but take your time and actually look around first. read more

Like Busaras, Dublin's main bus terminal, I find Connolly Station kind of cute. It's not large or difficult to maneuver around in. Everything's clearly labeled and everything's on time. It's just an easy place to deal with. All sorts of modes of transportation frequent this place: bus, Luas, DART, and national rail. It's not terribly difficult to get into our out of this place. The building itself is rather charming as well, and looks much more like the traditional European transport hubs than the other stations around the city. read more

This is one of the larger train stations in Dublin. It serves the local DART and commuter lines, plus a few Irish Rail lines (like up to Belfast). Unlike some of the smaller and more local DART stations there is a large readout screen of the train schedules. There is also a small bookstore (an Eason I think), a coffee shop, and a restaurant plus toilets before you get to the platforms. And unlike some other train station toilets I've seen in Europe the toilets at Connolly are free. Hurray for not having to dig around for a 50 cent Euro coin to go to the bathroom. Another great thing is there is a Luas stop (red line) just outside, and bus stops (for Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann). Depending on what platform your train is on you might not be on a covered platform, but if you're leaving on a platform like 6 or 7 (that's only partially covered) just stay inside until about 6 minutes before your train leaves. Since Connolly is a larger station there are ticketing agents here, as well as the self-serve ticket kiosks. If you're coming to Dublin for a few days the best thing to do is get a Leap card, which can be used on the trains, buses, and Luas (tram). A simple tap on before going to the platforms and tap off when you get to your arrival station and it deducts the right fare needed. It helps not having to fiddle with exact change too. There is a large map of the Dart system before the platforms, which is really nice. Although like Michael F. pointed out Dublin transit isn't the best when it comes to signage and directions. Connolly Station (being a larger station) is one of the better one. I'd also recommend going to Irishrail.ie and checking the timetables. Depending on the train, day and time of week you could be waiting several hours for a train. Try not to do that if you don't have to. Although if you gotta be stuck waiting for a train at a train station in Dublin then Connolly is the best. On a more negative side the area just outside Connolly isn't the best. There's usually homeless around and people asking for money. I've also heard of stories of people getting pickpocketed although it hasn't happened to me (and hopefully won't). Be aware of your surroundings, don't be flashing around big wads of cash or anything stupid like that and you should be okay. read more

The Dart for me as I live in Dun Laoghaire is great if I am traveling into Dublin or further afield which in this case was to Howth and back. The return journey was interesting as it was late (after 11pm) and the last Dart running from Howth back to town ....ok we missed the earlier dart which would have taken me back to Dun Laoghaire. There was just two lone females (us) traveling on the Dart late at night and we shared the carriage with a group of lads who were boisterous but well behaved. One of them played the banjo (he was excellent). I noticed that one of the lads was smoking but decided not to tell him that smoking was banned on the Dart ....and I decided not to follow his example despite the idea of doing so although fleetingly. Good to know I can still follow the law despite not being totally sober. We arrived Connolly Station and despite my wondering if I could bribe the driver to take me to Dun laoghaire we got off and left the station to be greeted by a row of Taxis ready to drive me the rest of the way home. read more

I use Irish Rail at least twice a day, usually involving Connolly Station. I depend on it. When things are working smoothly, it's grand. When there's a hiccup, then communication seems to break down and chaos unfolds. I am not a fan of the service at Connolly Station. I find most of the employees to be unhelpful and ill-informed. God help you if your train has moved to a different platform. The signs may still be reporting incorrectly and asking staff is taking a chance. This isn't a one-off experience. Whenever there's an issue and I have to ask an attendant what platform my train is on, the answer has inevitably been incorrect. I don't even bother asking now. The signs are also incorrect. For instance, it could be listed as Platform 5, but really has been diverted to 3. This has happened to me several times. On my platform, which is 'in the back' a bit, there seems to be an issue with intoxicated rascals. While they generally leave you alone, I'm not sure why they are allowed to loiter there yelling and be a nuisance. There seems to be security at the entrance, but I've not seen them on the platforms except when boarding a train. When there was snow on the ground, the staff and management handled the situation terribly, it was shameful. read more

Complaining about public transport in Ireland is a national sport. It really brings people of all ages, classes and creeds together. So the gradually improvement of Connolly Station over the years has been a bit of a blow to the population. There's not much to review though. It's a train station, so you know what you're getting (trains). It's relatively small and well sign-posted, so you won't get lost. There's some pretty decent food available (but it's pricey) and if you have to wait, do you don't have to huddle on a freezing concrete platform (unless you really want to). I'm always freezing in Connolly Station so if you've got a long wait there then wrap up! It doesn't serve as many national routes as big brother Heuston and its services tend to be more local, concentrating on the east and north-east coast. Trains run from Connolly to Belfast, Sligo, Rosslare ferry port, Maynooth, Longford, Drogheda and Arklow. It's also serviced by the DART and Luas lines and you can whizz right up to Heuston on the Luas for your onward journey. It's a mini-trek from the entrance to the DART platform in Connolly so don't meander if your DART is due! read more

I've used this station a few times to go to places like Mullingar and Drogheda. The station is very central and easy to get to, and the red luas line is right beside it (goes from Connolly to Tallaght/ Saggart). The Bus Eireann bus terminal is also beside the station, making it very easy and convenient to transfer. Inside, there are a few shops like Eason, a Pharmacy, AMT coffee shop etc. A good number of trains run from here albeit not too often. The train to Mullingar is every 2 hours... However, the trains are very comfortable with a few 4 group seats with a table, and there is a trolley that goes through serving snacks like sandwiches and pastries as well as coffee and tea. Depending on when and where you are going, the train can be practically empty or full to the brim. The morning trains to Drogheda are always jam packed as it's a commuter town, but not so bad to other areas. In terms of price, it's quite expensive comparing it to train services in places like London and Tokyo. A one hour return journey costs around €20, and the student discount is negligible at only a euro or so. You can buy tickets easily via the machines (allows card payment) or the counter. All the route information is displayed very clearly making it easy to navigate. The staff are helpful if you have any queries. A good thing is that the trains are always on time. Staff member was unfriendly to begin with and charged me 76 euro for 2 adults to Belfast which is an extortionate price Considering it only cost me 20 pounds for one adult to dublin on the train and it want even a first class ticket they sold me and almost didn't get a seat. It was even cheaper for my boyfriend to fly from Shetland to Dublin! Not happy with the price and will be taking the way better busses next time. And lastly the toilets were horrible, piss on the seat, cigarette burns on the toilet roll despencer and no toilet roll, not to mention the randomer cleaning his ears at the sink read more

Connolly is the main station for the city DART trains and the originating point for north bound inter-city services (like Dublin-Belfast). It is linked to the Luas (tram) red line to Heuston station where all the west and south bound trains depart. Connolly is also very close to the Busaras, the bus station for all Bus Eireann inter-city services. Many Dublin Bus (city bus) routes stop outside, or on the quays which are only a few minutes walk away. The city centre is about a 5 minute walk too. Plus there's a taxi rank outside. Phew! The station has had a heap of money spent on it in the past few years - there a lot of good information and ticketing services here and great disabled access. Being in an old building though means there's limits to what could be done. The DART platforms can be hard to find - go up the escalators, in the main door, along the platform to the left for a bit and then follow the signs - you may have to go downstairs to go upstairs too! read more

The "kitchen @madigans" I think is the name of the food place at the station. It's surprisingly good! I ate mashed potatoes and peas from the buffet which were really well seasoned and my partner had the vegetarian pasta which he said was great. Overall I'm just surprised to have had such good vegetarian food at a train station. Portions were big and it was pretty cheap. We both got a meal and a drink for under 20 eiro. read more

Connolly Station used to be a bit of a hell hole but in the last few years it's slowly turned into a much nicer and easier to use public transport depot. Directions to the trains and Darts are clearly labelled and in my experience they generally run on schedule most of the time. If the queue isn't too long at the ticket desk I'd advise going there rather than using the vending machines as they can be a bit unreliable, especially when you're in a hurry. And let's face it, most people are rushing when they're at a train station. The new toilets are a revelation - they're big, spacious, modern and clean with soap, dryers and plenty of mirrors. The old ones were hideous - cramped and damp with fluorescent lights. And Connolly now has plenty of cafes etc where you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat. Irish train stations have long had a bad reputation and thankfully the work that has gone into the likes of Connolly is helping to change that. read more
