Food options at the train station
Melissa L.

Apparently I'm in my train hopper era because I don't think I've ridden more trains in my life than I have in this last year! Lol. Okay that's a lie but for a drunken story of me sneaking away from Camarillo to LA for another time. I guess in my adult life, been taking a lot of trains lol. Anyways I needed to get from Dublin to Killarney and didn't want to spend a fortune trying to find some kind of private driver or taxi service to and from. It's a solid three hour ride so began researching the best way to get from point A to point B. The train was the best option which had me start out at Heuston Station in Dublin. It's a nice little station, I was pleasantly surprised by how many little food options and stalls there are at this station. Multiple coffee stations, chocolate, pizza, sandwiches, donuts and in traditional Melissa fashion, I found some sushi. Not bad prices and easy access when you just meet a bite before the train. Definitely good options for what it's. Plenty of bathrooms and trashcans. They did a good job of keeping their electronic board updated with the train platforms and times. All in all pretty easy to navigate for a non local.

Sit down restaurant inside the station.

A simple train station with a couple of sit down cafe options, a few grab and go markets, a chocolatier, coffee, juice bar and donuts. Relatively clean, pretty crowded and tough to find a seat at noon on a Friday. There are only nine platforms so it's pretty small. But grab some lunch as there's none available on the train.

I travelled through this train station on the way to Killarney. I went through on a Tuesday afternoon and it was fairly busy. I was here in 2017 as well and remember it being busy. It's about as clean as you'd expect a train station to be. It's has an appealing exterior with an interior that looks like it is meant to look like it's outside while also being protected from the elements. There are several shops that you can visit while you wait for your train. They're pretty reasonably priced (coming from an American) and quick to get through. There isn't free wifi for the station itself but a couple of shops offer it. There are pigeons wandering the area at all times but they don't really bother anyone, they just walk around. I wish there was more seating as it can be difficult to get a place to sit and wait with luggage, especially if you aren't travelling alone. Since I was only here for about an hour I didn't have much of an issue but if I was here longer I think I would like to see a couple more options for food that aren't just prepackaged sandwiches or donuts. It's easy to get to this station from the airport via the Dublin Express. It cost us €9 per person and took about 40 minutes.

Decent railway station with adequate food and drink options, but absolutely atrocious services (restrooms, information). Added a star back because there is a lot of security but they are friendly and not intrusive, just keeping people safe.

This is our train! Leaving out of track 5.

I took a train from Dublin Heuston to Portlaoise and it was phenomenal the seats were comfortable and they were a nice big table! I pre-booked my tickets online and collected them on the machine there. It was amazing! I was traveling with 2 other people. It also was very affordable only costing €35 for 3 people! There were lots of places to grab a bite to eat before your journey! I will absolutely be returning back to Dublin Heuston station soon!

Beautiful, super clean station with big board for information. We were pleasantly surprised.

Modern cars, but uncomfortable seating despite appearances

83 Euros round trip, Dublin/Heuston to Cork...ouch, that hurts. 2:35 hour trip. Pluses: + Irish rail is reliably on time, quiet, scenic, and frequent with beverage cart making one pass. + Buses, tram and taxis right outside Heuston Station. Express buses originate/terminate here to airport too. Gripes: - Couldn't make the padded seating any more uncomfortable for this American - Seats don't recline. - Slow Wi-Fi connectivity and occasional re-login required. - Not particularly fast by European standards. Our Dublin/Heuston to Cork train speed averaged 65 mph including a few stops Tip: Taxis Drop off and Pickup are different locations at Heuston...can be confusing. For pickup, taxies are to the right upon leaving the train station. Tram is straight ahead.

What else can be said about a train hub that offers shops, a decent central waiting area, and an easy-to-understand system? We typically order our tickets at the kiosk if not online. Either way, there is minimal wait. No sense in standing in a long line to get a ticket! It's a clean station and structured well enough for this 'lost American' to navigate! All aboard!

A friend of mine told me that the bathrooms in Heuston Station are from the future. All chrome with a mysterious blue light that might be for decoration and might be for killing bacteria. One doesn't know, and doesn't care, because it's pretty cool. I really do suggest a stop in the restroom for no other reason than to check out what the future is going to look like. Heuston Station is quite a nice station in general. It's large, bright, indoors and there are various shops and eateries to enjoy while you wait for your train. There are 6 platforms that travel all across Ireland. Just a tip: Booking tickets in advance will save you a lot of money, especially if you book online! There are also ample security guards around and it generally feels quite safe even late at night. It is serviced by DART and Luas too, which is good because the area it's in can feel a little sketchy at night.

No coffee shops open before boarding time of the 7am train this morning!!! What's that about?? Only food option available was Supermacs, poor showing for the main train station in the country! Station was pretty busy at the time, the 7am seems to be pretty popular with tourists as well as regular commuters. Apart from that the station was clean and well lit. I regularly travel home for the weekend by train and Irish Rail offer a pretty good service and train options.

Heuston Station is probably Ireland's biggest station with trains serving Galway, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Waterford and many others. It's located just on the outskirts of Dublin City Centre, and can be easily accessed by bus or the Luas. Being from Galway, I regularly travel up and down, and in recent years it has had a complete overhaul, so it looks much better than it used to. It has two easons for books/magazines, a smoothie bar, Supermacs, sweet shop, coffee station, sandwich bar as well as a little newsagents. Be warned through - travelling by train around Ireland is pretty pricey - about €50 return on average. Much more expensive than the bus, but you're paying for the comfort I guess!

This is a really pretty building, but I wish they had a nicer place to kick back than a hotel-style pub or Supermacs.

Malahide Train Station

Malahide is the last stop for the Dart so that train ends here and then goes back south to either Greystones or Bray. Platform 2 (and sometimes 1) is for the commuter train that goes to/from Dublin city centre (Connolly, Tara Street, or Pearse) to/from either Balbriggan, or Dundalk, or Drogheda. Most of the station is outdoors. A large part of platform 1 is covered, but most of platform 2 isn't. There is a small waiting room on either side. The room on platform 2 tends to be closed after 9pm. There's a bridge to walk from each platform and a lift as well. There's a read out screen on each platform telling you of the next train arrival/departure. Since this is a small station there are no toilet facilities. There's a mineral/pop/soda machine on platform 1, but nothing on 2. During the day there's a small coffee/snack cart in the parking lot. If you enter the station on the platform 1 side there's two ticket kiosks to buy a train ticket or buy/top up a leap card. If you have a lot of change there's a limit to how much change you can put in the machine. There's also an attendant at a desk who's there until about 9pm. If you walk down the road (Dublin Road) and go down the stairs to enter on platform 2 there's one ticket machine there. They tend to close the gate to platform 2 after 8pm, so you'll have to enter on platform 1 and walk over the bridge to the other platform. If you're visiting Dublin it's easy to take the Dart to Malahide. Malahide is a small enough town you can come here for a day trip, or you can stay here, and take the Dart to/from Dublin. The station isn't fancy, but it does it's job.

At no point in time did I feel in danger or awkward which typically happens to me all of the time. The navigation was simple enough for us and the ticket booth was automated and simple to use. This Mortons fortunately had a tobacconist and hence why I often dismounted the Luas prematurely so that I could get off, buy my cigarettes from this shop stationed within the perimeters of the stop itself and hence no distance required to be walked, then get back on the Luas and happily go a further two stops before alighting the Luas at my final destination. The Milltown stop is positioned in an isolated corner of Rathmines, 15mins walk at least from the main village and so unsurprisingly I never came across a shop from the Milltown stop to where I lived and it for this reason it seemed that the initiative of jumping off then back on at Beechwood seemed so great having either forgotten to pick them up in town prior to boarding at St. Stephen's Green or only realizing I was lacking in any tobacco whilst on the Luas making my way home.
