Took the NRA Basic Pistol Permit Course here. It was a one day course involving loading, unloading and live firing. Explanation of range rules and laws in obtaining a pistol permit. Strongly recommend these guys and their program. Am an existing permit holder - obtained from another school - so have a perspective on training classes. This program is excellent, very comprehensive and provides information beyond the basic material required just for the permit. Students coming out of this program will be well informed and have a solid base of safety and firearms handling. The students' community can also have confidence that the students will be responsible gun owners. Many of the 'permit' programs out there a simply permit mills. The course I originally took from [unnamed] center was nowhere close to this one. Just took their class for the Utah permit - which gives you carry rights in 26 states. And, as part of this I sat through the entire program with a friend who was getting his CT Permit. Very impressive. Bill is very authoritative on Legal and general policy issues, Brent provides a terrific (and at times, highly entertaining) walk through of the material required for the test. You see the real side of a business and a person once they already have your money. I put in a request to change my class and was told it was okay and to call back and arrange another date. I soon thereafter had to move to a different state so I called to ask for a refund. The employees who picked up when I called back didn't seem very helpful and said "well I don't know what he'll (the owner Mr. William Reed) will do about that" I then called my credit card company for a charge back. Recently I dealt with Mr. Reed himself who at first agreed to refund $35 over the phone in a handshake agreement. A few days later he called me back and said he wouldn't be refunding any of my class tuition out of what seemed like spite that I had disputed the charge (hey! all I wanted was my money back for services un-rendered, even agreed to take 35 not 125). I told him to go f**k himself to which he replied "you too". Find a place where the business owner doesn't take your money because you had to work that day or move to a state where you don't need jerks like this to rubber stamp your 2nd amendment rights. These guys got me my permit and their class is very thorough, you can't ask for more. Another reviewer complained about being "yelled at" for failing the shooting portion of his test, I thought they were good teachers. The thing is, you want to carry a handgun and the shooting test is very basic and is incredibly easy to pass. You need to be able to shoot your gun accurately to carry it, in fact in my opinion you need better marksmanship than what is required by the class. In the class you can get yelled at, and I suppose if you're fragile your feelings may get hurt, but in the real world if you "fail" you could kill somebody. Not a responsibility to take lightly, so to the reviewer who complained about being yelled at for failing the easiest marksmanship test out there, I would say GET OVER IT. read more

Did not have a good experience here. The main instructor we had for the course was great! But the owner...not so much. He talked down to me in a very rude, condescending manner. When questioning him about something he began to get loud to the point he was almost yelling at me. And before signing up for the course, I called to ask about the process and was told that they do the finger printing there and also send out the application, so we don't have to worry about any of it. Sounds great for $140, right? Wrong! That was a lie. I had to go out and still pay for application to be submitted and had to schedule fingerprinting on my own time. I would have had to do it anyway, but I chose to pay the extra money and drive an hour and a half to this class because I was told by the owner that the class takes care of all of it for us. Overall, I finished the class and got the certificate. But I definitely wouldn't recommend going here. It's a terrible process and the owner is a contradicting, condescending, disdainful man. read more

I just took the NRA Basic pistol course at Connecticut Firearms Training. I'm not trying to be mean with this review, just honest. As somebody already stated, the classroom portion is well organized i.e. paperwork in envelopes, notarized etc - no complaints about this. Bill was very informative and they seem to place great emphasis on safety and the legal stuff. However, for anyone that has never fired/held a handgun the practical training sucks. You have to fire 20 rounds, hit the target with all 20 rounds and there's not even a few practice rounds. You're shooting with an old 22 caliber that seems like a target pistol from the 1936 Olympics, it kept misfiring so it took multiple clips to qualify. One old nasty instructor, don't know his name, short and skinny with glasses went quickly through the dry fire procedure outside. I couldn't find the magazine release and he wouldn't tell me where it was because I apparently was watching him instead of the gun when he was demonstrating. He cops an attitude when you can't duplicate what he did. I'm paying for the class to learn how to do it correctly, if I knew everything then I could do it without you having to show me, duh! He shows you the dry fire exercise once and then has a an nasty attitude and smart remarks when you can't do it first time. I kinda felt like an ass in front of the other class members but I realized on the way home, he was the ass for behaving like he did. After the live fire exercise, I took off my ear protection because the instructor was speaking to me, I though he was attacking me as he manhandled the ear protection back on my head. Dude, I'm new to this and I'm nervous, you don't need to treat me like a 5 year old, just tell me I made a mistake and I will try not to repeat it. I'll never go back there for any classes. read more
