To begin I will start by saying that my family and I rarely complain about service. That being said…read moreI am writing this review in the hopes that I can reach at least one person considering Home Instead as an option for their loved ones and to share my experience with them. First, we were referred to this company by our rehabilitation specialist after my mom had a stroke. She has been in recovery ever since and needed a few days a week to assist with normal living routines like eating breakfast and getting ready for the day. She didn't need a lot, just some basic things when me and my other family were not available during the week. Our first experience with anyone from this company was quite good. We met with Leah who was kind, respectful and professional. She listened to our situation and set us up in their system. Then we had our first nurse. Our first nurse, can't remember her name, was fine. She went through all the right steps, no complaints. Then Wendy happened. Wendy was our second nurse of the week. Wendy showed up over 45 MINUTES late on a day where weather should not have been an issue. I received a phone call from Home Instead about 25 minutes AFTER she was supposed to be there explaining she would be late but didn't know exactly when. The excuse? She wasn't familiar with our home town. My first thought was wow, she doesn't have an operable cell phone? This caused me to have to stay home almost a full hour and miss work. Unacceptable. Then Wendy arrived. She proceeded to get to the house, and it was immediately clear she absolutely did have a cell phone, because she was on it CONSTANTLY. Now this may not seem like a big deal, but my mom's balance was impacted by the stroke, and she needs to be watched when moving throughout the house. Wendy would stand somewhere a few feet behind my mother while ON HER PHONE. We then asked her to make our mom's bed, which she did by throwing a single pillow (my mom has about 10 decorative pillows all on the floor which daily are thrown back onto the bed) onto the bed and not fixing the sheets, leaving all the rest scattered on the floor. She then asked my sister, who was home (thank god) to borrow my sister's cell phone (remember, Wendy's cell is very much functional as she was on it 80% of the time she was here) to "make a few calls". My sister immediately said no, as she should. Wendy finally left and we were completely shocked. We reached out to Leah to discuss our experience and she was very apologetic. She didn't charge us for that service, which I thought was handled correctly. A few days later we get another two nurses. I can't remember their names. Between the two of them over the next week: my mom wasn't fed at breakfast (2 times) or lunch (2 times). This was part of the very basic responsibility of what we hired them to do. My mom doesn't like to complain, so I didn't hear about the first few times they just didn't feed her until this last week. That was the last straw for me so I called Leah and informed her we would no longer be using their services and would be taking our business to a recommended competitor. Now, during their initial contract setup they informed us they require at least a week's notice if termination of service would be required. So when I called and terminated I was operating under the assumption we would have an additional week to get our new care team setup. The following Tuesday (one of the days we need people to help us) they scrambled to get someone here. She was about on time but we sent her home as I was sick and already with my mother for the day. Then, on Wednesday night around 6 pm by gut told me to check with Leah to ensure that we had someone for Thursday (our last day we would need assistance from Home Instead). About 6:30 I got a text saying something to the effect of "sorry, we were unable to find anyone to cover for tomorrow". 6:30. After I prompted a response. We were left in the DUST with absolutely no regard and no professional curtesy or letting us know we had no one. It is just my sister, mom and I in our family. Sometimes we need a little extra help since my mom's stroke. They knew that when getting to know our family. They knew our situation is difficult and we needed someone we could count on to fill in some gaps when we weren't available a few hours a week to talk care of our mother. We are internally a very optimistic bunch, but this was a very, very poor experience. I hope at least one person reads our experience and considers it before going with Home Instead. They were unprofessional, uncoordinated, uncaring, and most importantly they ADDED significant stress instead of doing their jobs and reducing it. Please do not use their services. They simply don't deserve your business. I would give them a 0 if I could.

There is nothing A+ about this company or the services they provide. And their fees? Ridiculous…read more Our family has been working with A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies of Ankeny and Des Moines, Iowa for the past six months. However, a recent incident with one of the owner of the company, Anne Porter, has brought our working relationship to a screeching halt. First and foremost, A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies charges an upfront $125.00 "Application Fee" before they will do business with you. Meaning, should you choose to hire A Plus Home Care, you will be charged $125.00 for their representative to take down basic information, such as your address, telephone number, date of birth, personal care needs, etc. More to the point, one has to pay a fee for the privilege of becoming a customer. Once you have paid their $125 "Application Fee," expect to pay $35.00 for their first hour of in-home care service and $24.00 an hour for each additional hour of service thereafter. Example: an eight hour shift of care will cost $203.00. Once you have paid to become a customer, you will receive a booklet/contract outlining the companies guidelines and rules. A brief overview of our experience: Our working relationship took a turn for the worse on day number one, when one of the owners of the company dropped my mother to the floor. Fortunately, my mother was not seriously injured. After employing A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies for a few weeks, we decided to pursue hiring a caregiver of our own because the companies hourly rates were choking us. After running a couple of ads, we soon hired a private caregiver at a fraction of the price. From there, we utilized A Plus as a backup (in the event our caregiver had a personal emergency) and for special situations that required an extra hand, such as bathing. But even bathing proved to be too expensive after the company refused to assist our caregiver in giving our mother a bath. Instead of A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies sending one representative to assist our caregiver with a bath, the company refused to bathe our mother if our caregiver was involved, and instead insisted upon providing two of their own representatives ... at twice the price ($35/hour x 2). Having been placed over a barrel, we had little choice but to pay $70 for our mother's baths. The final straw for us was when the owner of the company, Anne Porter, came into our home to give our mother a bath. While here, Anne gave our private nurse her business card and offered our caregiver a job with A Plus. Bottom line: The owner of this company came into our home to recruit our nurse. The booklet/contract A Plus provides its customers upon application (upon paying the $125 "Application Fee") clearly states that under no circumstances can a customer hire an A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies employee. And yet the owner of the company violated her own contract by coming into our home and recruiting our employee. When I learned of this, I called A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies and left a message for Anne on the companies voicemail. I explained why I was calling and I stated that I wanted the $125 "Application Fee" refunded immediately. My call went unreturned and I received no check in the mail. A week or so later, I called Anne's personal cell number and spoke with her directly. During this conversation, I explained that in light of her actions, coupled with the fact that she violated her own contract by attempting to hire my caregiver, I no longer felt comfortable having her or her representatives in my home ever again. Furthermore, I explained that since we would no longer be doing business with A Plus Home Care Services & Supplies again, I wanted the "Application Fee" returned immediately. Anne's response: "the application fee is non-refundable." To date, we have received no refund of the $125 "Application Fee" we paid upfront in order to do business with A Plus Home Care Services of Ankeny and Des Moines, Iowa.
