This is, by far, the best dentist I've ever heard about. I can't say I've gone to a ton of dentists, but from start to finish, Overman Family Dentistry made my stay as hassle-free and as pain-free as possible. In fact, I'd actually go as far as to say that their dentist and service made dental work nearly enjoyable. When it comes to the stereotype of the "scary, painful dentist", they've done everything possible to avoid that. For one, setting up an appointment is simple. You should definitely call ahead of what you want since appointments do fill up (like most dentists). Mine was set 3 weeks in the future. The week before my appointment, I received a text reminding me about the appointment. The day before, I received another text. I appreciate the non-obtrusive texts that remind me of my appointment. The building itself is fantastic. It's over by Biolife and K-mart, so if you know where those are, you'll be good. The interior is well-done. Like, insanely. They have a children's playroom to help entertain the kids, and the adult waiting room is really well-furnished and includes a television. (Was playing the Cooking Channel when I got there) Finished up some paperwork for my first appointment, and I was into the appointment itself 5 minutes AHEAD of my appointment time. Uh, how often does that happen!? The dentist (Dr. Overman) is extremely friendly. As-in, he's not judgmental or rude during your entire visit. Nothing feels hurried or like you're just another number. The dentist explained various options for me including costs as well as what we should do after this initial appointment. When it came to the dental work itself, both the dentist and the assistant were fantastic. If I mentioned something hurt or made a wince, they checked in with me, and when applicable, would add more numbing agent to the area and wait and talk with me while it took affect. At no point would I ever say there was "pain". Not once. If there ever was, the dentist took care of it promptly and didn't start doing anything again until more numbing agent was put on. Seriously, the dentist and his assistants know what they're doing. I chose to listen to music during my dental work, but if you prefer something else, they have movable televisions with DirectTV. They can position the TVs right above your head to watch while you're having work done. I actually heard children GIGGLING during their dental work - normally you hear crying. Seriously, this has to be one of the best dentists in the area. I'm glad he's opened his own practice, and I'll be coming back again. (As a note, when giving me aftercare instructions since it was Friday, he gave me his personal cell number to call in case there were any issues and the office wasn't open. That's how awesome this dentist is.) I was an employee here and was the worst career move I made. I saw behind the scenes and made me ill. Dr Schloerb was one dr there and his assistant Ashley. I don't know how many times I had to see them flirt and act inappropriate at work. I walked into his office on numerous occasions and either see Ashley or dr laying on the floor acting like they were exercising. When really this should hv been done in our break room. On other numerous occasions I was training and needed assistance however when looking for them they were always in the other room talking about personal issues like they were dating. I couldn't get a word in so I left. This should not go on at a place of employment and especially when the assistant just got married. Honestly this was the worst job due to these issues that I ever had. Stay clear. read more

I met Dr. Overman when he and members from his church - Ames Cornerstone - came to volunteer at a local outreach. He said he took all insurance, so I scheduled an appointment for my wife. I was a bit leery at first, but not only were we welcomed into a stunning office, but he and his dental hygienist took extra time and care with my severely odontophobic wife. My wife sees the exact same person on every visit, and the care is exemplary. Dr. Overman also held a free dental clinic day for Story County residents a few months ago. I started going to Overman Family Dentistry when I was a student in Ames. After graduating, I moved to the Des Moines area and tried a few different dentists in the metro area. I've yet to find anyone that I have enjoyed and trusted as much as Dr. Overman and his staff! Dr. Overman always takes the time to answer any questions I have, and is patient and kind. The hygienists and assistants I've had while in office have always been the best as well! The visits are comfortable and not stressful at all. I would highly recommend Overman Family Dentistry. On phone they said that they work with Delta Dental, and confirmed the same when did me diagnostic check and following quite expensive treatment. Only several weeks later, when I received bills demonstrating that the insurance covered only a small fraction of the cost, they disclosed that they are not in the Delta Dental network (and presented this as they did not know it before). This is chitting. Or, irresponsible work, as the minimum. Beware! read more

The first issue was that Overman Family Dentistry (in Ames, Iowa) did not work well with my Delta Dental insurance through Iowa State University. The dentist provided quotes before service, but apparently did not check with my insurance company about exactly what was covered (every other dentist we have been to checks the insurance first). Immediately after the work, they wanted to charge several hundred dollars more than their quote, but finally agreed to honor the quote. Six months later, they sent a bill for the extra amount that they had waived, saying it was past due. Iowa State is the largest employer only a few blocks away, so they should be fully aware of what type of fillings are covered with their insurance, and it seems like they are just trying to increase the bill. Also, their very young (just out of school) dentist stares at the TV while he is working with patients, and some fillings have quickly chipped out. Finally, it seems like they claim there is a lot more dental work needed than is truly necessary. They spend a lot of money on trying to make it look like a fancy dental practice, but the quality of work and customer service does not match. read more

I was really nervous to make the switch to a new dentist. I had been going to my previous dentist in my hometown for 30 years. When I booked the appointment over the phone the receptionist was very kind and helpful. I needed a Monday appointment so it did take around 6 weeks to find a time for me. The office waiting area was very welcoming. I loved that I could help myself to a chai latte at their Keurig. I also met the hygienist and Dr. Overman in a separate welcome room. They had a card and a small gift for me, which was a nice touch. Next I had a very specialized type of X-ray that took pictures from all angles of my jaw. Then came the regular tooth X-rays. My mouth is small so Kelsey the hygienist offered to use the smaller plates to fit my mouth better. It was so much more comfortable than the "Adult" sized ones. Kelsey also did a great job cleaning my teeth. She was all about making sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. I really appreciated how Dr. Overman throughly explained my bite and the way my jaw looked and even had pictures of my individual teeth and how they are wearing. He's really a great communicator and really put me at ease. We talked about how orthodontics may help. He gave me a referral for an orthodontist that he recommended. What a great dental practice. The staff is great. They are helpful and very good at getting their jobs done right the first time. Doctor Overman is a very talented dentist. He has a great patient bedside manner. I am very comfortable with him and am very happy with all of the work he has done for me from routine cleanings to crowns. My husband , who is not a big fan of dentists in general has so much trust in Doctor Overman that he recently underwent a total dental overhaul of his teeth and loves the results.
