I seldom write a negative review, but in this case it's very justified. I have used Conklin Bros Floor Covering in San Jose for several years. And I always work with the salesperson named Tom. Prior to Tom joining Conklin Bros several years ago, I used Tom when he worked for a prior floor covering company. During the last 20+ years I can recall 16 different floor covering jobs Tom has sold to me and they all went smoothly. Recently, I had a very large luxury vinyl flooring (artificial hardwood) job done and it was horrible. The first installer used a liquid to pour onto wood underlayment to level out a depression. As it dried over the next few days, it leaked into the floor below and down a freshly painted wall. There was no offer by Conklin to reimburse me for the painter to repaint the wall. Also, a leveling compound that is the consistency of toothpaste is used for such a situation, and I have seen prior installers from Conklin Bros use this. When I asked this installer why he didn't use this product he said he never heard of it. Due to health reasons, this installer was unable to complete the job, and a second installer was assigned to complete the work. The second installer left large gaps, a lot more than what is needed for floor expansion, in 3 places and did a horrible job joining a threshold to where it meets the baseboard. A total shlock job. I took photos and sent them to Tom and the installer returned to make the corrections. The installer never made these corrections. Tom called to see when my final payment would be received and I asked if the two of us could meet because the installer is unable to understand what he needs to do despite my sending photos of what needed to be done. Tom, in a very huffy voice, said that he was not going to return and wanted to know when the final payment would arrive. I told Tom that I was not going to pay the $7,000+ balance until the 3 small problems were corrected. Tom said, "Okay then - I'll file a Mechanics Lien on the property" and hung up. First, he cannot file such a lien without first suing me in court and obtaining a court judgment should his case be successful. I decided to pay the $7,000+, less $500 so I could hire another company to perform the corrections. I felt this was fair. For a salesperson who has sold me 16 prior floor covering jobs over 20 years this is how Tom acted. Think how he would treat you if you were using him for the first time and did not have 16 prior jobs under your belt. Stay away from this place and especially Tom. This horrible experience was a classic bait and switch. The glowing promises made by Daryl Zweigle during the sales process had absolutely nothing to do with the terrible workmanship I received. Daryl never mentioned that he wouldn't be doing the work. The email bid came from Daryl at Conklin Bros. but apparently Mariano's Hardwood Floors does Conklin Bros. floors. Daryl repeated ad nauseam about his 40 years experience and after I realized that Mariano would be doing the floor, he touted Mariano's 40 years experience --and that I was getting 80 years experience, yet the quality of the hardwood floor installation promised was nowhere to be found and that was just a sales pitch. Decades of claimed expertise doesn't guarantee competence, quality or accountability. Mariano was a no show no call and couldn't be bothered to come look at the job before the installation. He sent someone that he uses from yet another company for the installation. So much for 80 years experience. The red oak hardwood installation of two bedrooms and hallway is riddled with defects and workmanship issues. The problems were serious enough that I hired a certified flooring inspector who documented numerous deficiencies in a formal report. Rather than taking any responsibilty or working towards a resolution, Mariano argued and dismissed every finding refusing to make the necessary repairs and stopped responding altogether. Daryl's only reply was-- call Mariano. Subpar installation and no accountability, I strongly recommend not dealing with any of them. read more

We had this company install laminate hardwood floors in our condo complex. When they installed the floor, I was unable to open or close my door. I notified them and had to wait over a week for a response. In the meantime I had to leave my front door ajar and unlocked. No safety at all. They finally came by, agreed that the thresh hold was a problem, and agreed to put a new threshold in the following week. That was late November. It is now February. No thresh hold. Jason S. agreed to come over but he totally dropped the ball and was a no show with no communication in spite of several requests for a response. This is our second time to use Conklin Bros. Dave Todd, our rep is very professional and friendly. He answered our questions again and again, gave us floor samples to take home and try, helped us find the threshold boards. He is very diligent and supportive. We made a mistake in using our general contractor to install the floor boards instead of Conklin. The result was terrible with two big areas in the kitchen and laundry room being uneven and difficult to walk on. Even though our contractor offered to redo the sections for free, we decided to hire Conklin because of their expertise in flooring. The redo job was done by Jason Synegal, who has done a beautiful job with high grade of floor leveler material and his skilled smoothing techniques. He stood out by communicating very clearly compared to other contractors, from letting us know his estimated arrival time to his work progress and process. He is very positive and patient, and it was such a pleasant experience to work with him. He has fixed our floor for life! read more

After a water leak caused a flood in my home, I was desperate to find someone to repair and reinstall my carpeting, I really was having NO LUCK getting anyone to call back, Then I thought I would try Conklin Bros. I was a former customer, I sent them an email late on a Saturday night, then on SUNDAY my phone rang, it was Doug Rose, on his day off getting back to me. He was there the next day to survey the job, and by Thursday of that week Conklin Bros. had done the job. The installer Manuel was superb, a neat and efficient job was done in no time. At this point, I'd like to leave a NEGATIVE number of stars for Conklin Brothers San Jose! They sent out a different installer (Radio) on 08/14; he didn't screw up the installation! But he didn't inspect the carpeting before he installed it either. It had more than a dozen pulled loops, which we discovered the first time we walked into the rooms less than 48 hours after the carpeting was installed. Then, we had to wait until 09/05 for an independent carpet inspector to come out to look at the carpet, take pictures, take a sample, etc. Now, we have to wait for Karastan to run lab tests and get back to Conklin Brothers, before Conklin's Gail will order a third piece of carpeting! What possible verdict could Karastan deliver that would cause Conklin's Gail to think that we are NOT entitled to a third piece of carpeting? It should have been ordered as soon as she saw the report from the inspector. What possible scenario does Gail think will lead to us paying the balance on carpet with pulled loops?!? She used to be a great salesperson but she's seeming seriously deluded at this point.... avoid, Avoid, AVOID Conklin Brothers, all of the locations! My attempt to get an email to the person listed as the General Manager of the SJ location got forwarded to Gail! My attempt to get an email to the owner of the company (via the San Mateo location's salesperson--Doug) got forwarded to Gail! The installer neglected to safely intstall our carpeting, leaving the stairs bare, with upraised nails on every stair, staples protruding, and folded up carpet at the to waiting to trip someone. The situation is unsafe, but they REUFSE to do anything about it until at leas tomorrow moring. They told us to "just put some towels down and be careful." They refused to make the staircase safe in any way tonight. We have to wear shoes to the top, then take them off at the top so that we don't walk on the new carpet with our shoes. It would only take one slip for a very serious injury to occur. UPDATE: Apparently the Craig Nourie, the VP who won't call, because he "already went home" did speak with our sales person who then called me, and suggested that we "put some towels and blankets on the stairs and attach them to the nails." read more

Absolutely love our new carpet. Hadn't realized how bad our old carpet was and how much the padding had deteriorated. Got an absolutely great carpet with some texture to it so it will hide anything our baby does to it. The new carpet looks great and feels great. I'm not one for going barefoot but my wife and I have taken to walking around in bare feet all the time. The installers did a terrific job, were very respectful of safety given the COVID situation and we are very happy with the install. I had Conklin put in hardwood and carpets about 9 years ago throughout 90% of my house. They did a fantastic job. My wood floors are still beautiful and my carpet is still in great shape. The one thing that sticks with me is they made the installation super easy. They moved the large furniture as they installed, making my life simple. I'd use them again in a heartbeat. This year i did a remodel on my kitchen, the one part of my house not affected by the original Conklin installation as i have tile in that room. I was worried the i might need some border pieces of hardwood at the kitchen to match my other floors. I called Conklin. Within an hour, my original sales person Rae called me and immediately remembered my project. He said they could easily provide more flooring pieces if needed. So helpful! I didn't end up needing the pieces this time but it's nice to know Conklin has my back!! I'll use them again when i need another flooring refresh. read more

He helped us choose a flooring that fit our needs and budget perfectly. In addition, Rae spent extra time walking us through every step of installing the flooring, since we were going to install ourselves (and without prior experience at all). He explained the process in easy steps that we could understand. And he offered tips and tricks advice that only someone with years of experience can offer. Nice showroom and this was the only tile showroom open on a Sunday. Yes most of the tile seems overpriced compared to the smaller stores, but the other stores were closed. We did manage to find the tile we needed to work with our other tile and at a good price. Was not completely happy that they have no tile in stock that you can buy from the showroom floor. Also the tile we picked was supposed to be local in San Jose but they could not check till Monday. Then we came to find out that the stock was in LA and we had to wait an extra 3 days to get in. When picking up the tile the warehouse is open till 5:30pm even though the showroom is open till 6. So if your gonna be 5 minutes late you better call first. read more

Milan gave us great customer service. We explained that we had a cat that pied on our carpet and we needed to get the carpet replaced. He explained how to remove the odor and helped with the process. Next the carpet installer came and hand scrubbed the floor to make sure the odor was gone and then finished installing the carpet. Most carpet installers will only tear out a carpet and put in a new one but Conklin went the extra mile. Also there prices are very competitive. read more

This place sells premium-priced carpets that they say is stain-proof and just rinse with water. They lied to us. The salesperson - who said he's been working there for 20 years - told us that the premium $5+/square feet non-toxic carpets were stain-proof. I told him specifically that we have kids and need a stain-proof carpet. He assured me that the carpets have a life-time warrantee, he gave us directions on how to use water to rinse out the stains and he said the company would replace the carpets if it stained. He said it's OK to buy the light colored carpet because of the stain-proof guarantee It's been 5 weeks now and we have a big stain on the carpet that does not come out. We called the store and they said that they do not provide such a guarantee. And they said for us to pay for professional carpet cleaning. read more

Conklin Brothers jingle "you can count on us" apparently isn't the case. So frustrated with my experience. I went into the San Jose store more than a week ago looking for luxury vinyl plank flooring. After picking out several samples to take home, the salesman took my contact info but before I left I showed him the samples I was borrowing and the posted pricing which he said to "not pay attention to as he could get me a better price on my selections". I've been to multiple stores, taking samples home and was really happy when I got back to the house and one of the Conklin Brothers own brand products was perfect. The posted price for the flooring was $4.49 per square foot (I even took a picture of the price (attached below) so I would remember what each sample was listed at). When I contacted the salesman to let him know I'd found a product I liked and would like a quote. He texted me a figure of which was not only the "deal" he'd promised but actually higher than the advertised price. I texted him back and brought the discrepancy to his attention. His text reply was that "he would check the price list and get back to me". That was more than a week ago and not another word. I called the store to speak with the manager yesterday and was told he was out of the office but the price was actually now even higher than the quote I got from the original salesman. I know without a doubt what the price was as not only did I take a photo of the posted price but there was more than one of this particular floor samples in the same rack I took it from. When I mentioned this to the person I spoke to yesterday she said that "yes, the price has gone up" since apparently last week?!! Such shoddy customer service, I'm really not only surprised but very disappointed. I thought being a bigger "chain" store I wouldn't get the run around like this. My husband and I had thought we would purchase carpet from Home Depot, Ugh...no offense to Home Depot, but we left with a LOT of questions and ended up at Conklin Bros. I am SO glad we did. It was great to find people who know everything about what they are selling and could answer all of our questions, make suggestions and really care that we were getting exactly what we wanted. Didi not only spent a lot of time with us at the store, a lot of time (sorry Didi), she was so knowledgeable, let us know what styles would complement our home and what would stay current and was durable. She also came to our home to double check measurements and again answer questions and address concerns about color. She was FANTASTIC. Follow up was excellent. And it was nice to have one person that worked with us instead of whoever picks up the phone. Didi knew us and even called us back when she wasn't in the store. I don't often write reviews, but I wish I had taken the time to research stores before this experience. It can be a lot of information and you really do want experts helping you. PROS: Huge showroom. Lots of options. I worked with Steve Boardman, one of the sales representatives. He was very knowledgeable and listened well to my concerns and questions. I walked out satisfied with the quote and products I ordered. At the home inspection a few days later, Boardman came on time and measured the rooms. He also brought samples of the flooring I would be getting, so I can see how it would appear. I am glad he did, because the lighting is different at home compared to the lighting in the showroom. The installers arrived on time (both times) and installed the flooring as requested. At my request, they left extra flooring of the old and new for any future needs. CONS: Boardman said that the flooring would be installed in a couple of weeks. It actually took well into the following month. Thus, he promised something he could not keep. When I asked why it was taking so long and what form of compensation I could get in return, he chuckled at me and offered nothing. On the day of installation, the installers did not have enough material to finish one bathroom. They had to order more and come back another day. It would have been nice if they planned better and installed it all on one day like originally promised. read more
