Both representatives (Paul and Deborah) refused to give a ballpark estimate after I gave the sq footage and my preference for carpet (cheapest option as it's for a rental), they insisting on having me come down to their store, and book for a remeasure (already had measurement from Lowes). We asked for 3 references, measurements of the floors they'd refinish (so we could see how much per sq ft), type of materials, and to clarify the timing contract, which they requested 50% downpayment. CSLB dictates that as well. We can ask for anything we want, you can request to stay with their required 10% or $1000, whichever is less." and "If you call 20 retail stores, they will all say the same thing. I will sometimes negotiate, but most people don't see half down and half upon completion as a barrier. " They may have amazing teams on the ground doing the work, but the back-office and administrative team is breaking the law. Yes, we filed a formal complaint. WHY can't they just follow the RULES? This law is for ALL CONTRACTORS, not just "commercial" or "residential". And yes, flooring restoration is construction, that's why CSLB exists, and this company has a LICENSE. It is not about when the project goes to plan but about when it doesn't. Going in, we knew there were a few unknowns with our new home's existing flooring situation. And we found them when Paul's crew came out to take up our floors. Most of the floors were glued down super-tight to our concrete slab. What was expected to be a 1-2 day pull-up ended up needing 5 days and machines to help get the floor up. Even after the planks were all up, there was a whole patchwork of glue residue that needed to be cleaned up off the concrete as well. I am grateful to Paul and his hard-working crew who had the patience and dedication to stick with the job. Paul was also great at communicating and answering questions before and during this time. While he would not always respond to text messages, any time I called him, he would be available shortly. Even after hours. I had used Slaughterbeck Floors 3 times since 1990, so I knew the quality of their work and I trust them completely. After a full home remodel, completed in November 2023, I noticed that the company hired by my contractor to refinish my 80 year old oak floors did an awful job, almost ruining the wood. There were ripples on the floors throughout the house, sanding circle scuffs at the doorways, and holes and flaws pretty much everywhere that had not been filled. In addition, there were gouges in the kitchen area where the workers had dragged appliances into place. It was a mess. I called Slaughterbeck and Paul came out to access the issues and agreed to take on this very challenging "fix" job. He put one of his best guys on the job which I appreciated so much. Dominic was AMAZING! He turned a really bad situation into a beautiful floor. His expertise was evident in every aspect of his approach. From educating me about the issues he saw, proposing solutions to fix the issues, and communicating with me through the entire process. The result was incredible. What a huge letdown. My daughter and I popped into Slaughterbeck Floors today around 11am to look at their laminate flooring. A male worker was nice enough to greet us when we entered and when I told him I was looking at laminate that was waterproof and held up well, he directed us upstairs to look at samples. He mentioned that a sales person would be with us shortly. A female worker did check in on us after about 5 mintues (she was helping another customer) and I told her what I was looking for, laminate that looked like hardwood and was waterproof and held up to scratches since I have dogs (2 Beagles). She told us that laminate wasn't a good choice since the outler layer is plastic. I've been told differently, that laminate has come a long way in the past few years. I inquired as to whether the samples they had in the showroom were waterproof and held up to scratches. The sales person just said she didn't know. She also didn't know the prices and just mentioned she would have to "look into it". Frankly, I'm confused. On the Slaughterbeck website it states the following about laminate (supposedly that they provide): "The top layer is a protective wear layer with a transparent finish that is resistant against scratches, staining, and fading." Yet the salesperson had no laminate samples to show us that fit this claim. (Ironically, the person at Home Depot I spoke to a few weeks back seemed a lot more knowledgable about laminate flooring and flooring in general.) It may be that this flooring company is best suited for installing anything "other" than laminate, for instance hardwood, engineered hardwood or luxury vinyl. (The sales lady kept recommending the luxury tile (which by the way, is a lot more costly.) I really wanted to work with this store since they are in Campbell and to support local business, however their salesperson just didn't instill a lot of confidence in me based on our interaction. I even wanted to see about getting a quote for getting my living room floor done. FYI, I eventually ended up going with Bass Family Flooring in Los Gatos (see my review). They are not only more experienced and super quick install and ordering of product, but they have a better selection AND, most importantly, very reasonably priced. read more

Was referred to Jim at Slaughterbeck Floors by a neighbor and I'm so glad I called him. We originally had our floors done by another subcontractor and they did what I thought was a great job until a few months later when our floors started to lift. It wasn't until this past winter with all the rain when the floors started to bow and cup. So I called Jim at Slaughterbeck ASAP and he came out to assess my floor issue the next day, and sent his guys out to do repairs the following days after we met. I didn't get a chance to meet Miguel, but my neighbor told me he was the absolute best and he sure is. My floors are as flat as can be and you can't even tell he took the baseboards off. He did such a great job and even put on mini baseboards at the island so the wood that was cut inappropriately would not show. Also wanted to note the office staff was very nice and helped get me on the calendar ASAP as I had a party five days after my initial call. Within a month after I had our oak floors refinished, our dog and cat both had accidents which left bad stains. One contractor came out and did not do a good job and subsequently wanted to replace the effected slats at a huge cost. Instead our Contractor suggested Slaughterbeck. Paul was out the next day to look at the situation and provided a very reasonable bid to refinish the areas involved. In short, my floor looks beautiful!! You'd never know we had pets!! This is a long overdue review for such a great work done by Jim and Mike. I placed an order for Masland carpet and the price was very reasonable as I did my homework comparing with many until I found Slaughterbeck. But what stop me here, not only the price, but the professional, the care, and ease of communication with Jim, his staff. The afterwork was simply amazing - it is needless to say about the great quality of the product. But I want to emphasize the work Mike did. The installation was quick and thorough - there was a hiccup on a broken ceiling light but they were candid about it and communicate and compensate the cost. Anyone who did a remodeling knows that accidents happen but it is who you work with that make sure a smooth transition of overcoming the problem. Last, it was my turn of forgetting to put the audio line down the carpet for my speakers, and it was very painful to do it myself without the tools to protect yourself from needles holding down the carpet. Mike came back immediately and reinstall the carpet with the audio wire tuck under the carpet. I originally thought that the bedrooms were hardwood (underneath some older carpet), and had an estimate for three rooms of sanding and refinishing. When the crew came to the house and saw that the bedrooms were laminate, not wood, they immediately called Joan, who in turn was ready for me to come to the shop right away to look at flooring options. Since it was right before the holidays - and right before movers were scheduled to move in my furniture, etc - time was of the essence. I hate to be the one to break the 5 star reviews but my experience with the business was dismal. They were recommended by a close friend who is also an interior designer. Their response to an Internet inquiry was not very informative and after being passed around to a few people we were told to come in to the showroom. When I went into the store they told me I should have made an appt. Apparently their business is doing well because Joan called us to get out of a home appointment in early August because she was running late. Sanding, minor repairs, wood filler to achieve smooth surface, etc. Crew was on time, professional, hardworking, neat, cleaned up nicely behind themselves every day. Job was done on schedule as per bid. Can't ask for more. We are about to redo our kitchen. One general contractor bid an allowance of $5k for an oak kitchen floor to match the living room dining area. Slaughterbeck's bid for the same kitchen floor is $2400. I wrote a glowing review about 9 months ago. I'm sad to say I have to update with a disappointing update. It turns out that during the installation at that time, one of the nails used to attach the baseboard went through a water line in the wall. It took 9 months before it started leaking. I called to speak with Joan about what had happened. I wasn't looking for any financial reimbursement, but is wanted her to know what happened so it could be avoided with another customer. I was so disappointed with her reply. She took not responsibility saying there is no way to avoid this from happening (yes you can if you locate and nail into studs) and then she offered me some cleaning products as the best she could do - if I was willing to come in the shop. All I was looking for was confirmation that what they did was wrong and they would do better next time. Didn't happen. You will want to ask any installer you hire how they avoid hitting utilities in the walls. I will from now on! To fix this problem required me bringing in a plumber, HVAC person (we had to remove duct work to get to leak), and a drywall repair person (to repair a ceiling and a wall on floor above) to take apart and put my house back together. Almost as expensive as the floor I put in. read more

AVOID THIS COMPANY. My basic problems with this company were the misrepresentation of services offered and unprofessional behavior. I have a 60 year old house and I wanted to get the carpets removed and the existing hardwood floors stained and refinished. I was especially interested in getting the floors stained to match some of the existing doors in the house. I went over this requirement with each floor company that came out for an estimate. Joan Slaughterbeck, the owner of Slaughterbeck Floors, came out to my house for the job estimate. At this time Joan asked me what sort of stain I wanted. I pointed to an existing door in the hallway and said asked if her company could match the stain on the door. She said "No problem. We can match this stain." I asked her if she was really sure if her company could match the stain color. The color is somewhat between Honey Maple and Teak. I have tried myself to match the stain color in oil based stain and I know that it is not easy. Joan Slaughterbeck again told me that her company would have no problem in matching the stain. She said: "We have a professional stain matching service. My guys do this all the time. No problem." On the basis of her verbal description of the services of her company I accepted her bid. I thought that since she was the owner of Slaughterbeck Floors and that they had been in business for over 30 years, that she should know the abilities of her company. The Slaughterbeck work crew came out to my house, removed the carpets and sanded the floors. On the next day the lead worker asked me what stain color I wanted. I told him that Joan had said he would match the stain on the door in the hallway. The worker looked at me like I was crazy, rolled his eyes, and shook his head NO. I again told him that Joan promised me that the refinishing job would include matching the stain on door. The lead worker just shook his head NO and said that he could NOT match the stain on the door. I then asked to see a stain chart for the brand of stain that they were supposed to be applying, DuraStain. The worker told me: "A stain chart? Those don't exist". Well this is total crap. Stain charts for DuraStain exist and the other flooring companies that I received bids from all had stain charts. At that time the worker told me that he could offer me only 3 choices for a stain: clear, golden oak, and cherry. He had absolutely NO stain matching ability. Frankly, this is a total misrepresentation of services during the bid and estimate phase. If Joan Slaughterbeck had been honest with me and told me that her company could not match the stain color that I wanted, I would have moved on to a different company. At least the other companies who submitted bids all had basic stain charts. You should not have to pay several thousand dollars in upfront costs and move all the furniture out of your home, only to find that the flooring company has lied to you about their total lack of stain matching ability. Getting the right stain color was very important to me when hiring a company for this job. Which is why I asked about it during the bid and estimate process. A customer cannot make an informed choice about hiring a company if that company misrepresents their abilities. In the end I was forced to choose one of Slaughterbeck's limited stain choices. I was not given any other options at that point. There were other problems with this job. When the carpets were removed and the original hardwood floors exposed, several boards had either water or termite damage. I agreed to pay an extra fee to have the damaged boards replaced. But after the first coat of polyurethane was applied I found a board that still had a large hole in it. This board was among the group of damaged boards that were supposed to have been replaced. The workers were quite happy to stain the board with the large hole in it and put polyurethane over it, as if everything was OK. It took an email to Joan Slaughterbeck to get the damaged board replaced. This is NOT a professional hardwood floor refinishing service. I was at my home everyday if the workers need to talk to me about existing problems. They didn't do that. If you are getting your hardwood floors refinished you should definitely AVOID THIS COMPANY. There are other professional floor refinishing companies in the local area. I am extremely sorry that I hired this company. I would never hire them again for any sort of floor service. read more

They didn't have staff in store who could help and passed my 5 choices to a "salesperson" who called me later on. The employee who called- were she one of my reps I would have fired her on the spot. She asked no questions about my budget, she asked nothing around time frames or desires, she launched into a sort of snotty tirade about how they can't be compared to anything or anyone else. When I explained that I had brought the sample in to look at color and a fit for our project, she asked me to narrow my choices to two so as not to waste her time. She failed to understand my 5 figure budget, she failed get any of my business, and prompted this terrible review. Our contractor hired Slaughterbeck Floors for our renovation project and we found their installation crew to be efficient and talented. The job included an area in front of the fireplace where the hardwood floors had to be woven to match the surrounding floor and the weave is beautiful. The only reason for the four stars rather than five is because of some small water discoloration in front of the refrigerator and dishwasher, which our contractor claimed was previous damage and couldn't have been corrected. Unfortunately, I didn't notice it until the floors were completely finished, but would have expected the Slaughterbeck installers to point out to me early and to discuss alternatives. Otherwise, the job is beautiful and we'd highly recommend Slaughterbeck Floors. read more

Slaughterbeck Floors is a longtime local business with an excellent reputation. We have used them twice in the last three years for replacing both hardwood flooring, replacing resilient flooring, and refinishing hardwood flooring at two different properties due to water damage from a leaking kitchen appliance. I cannot recommend the highly enough. Our first experience was three years ago at a rental property we own and we selected them not only because of their reputation, but the fact they could replace the resilient flooring in the kitchen plus replace/refinish the hardwood flooring in the remainder of the house due to the water damage. As our tenants had to move out during the repair, time was of the essence. The replacement and refinish went perfectly and our tenants moved back in on schedule. We just recently hired Slaughterbeck again to refinish the floor in the kitchen of our home after damage from a leaking dishwasher. The floor needed to be sanded down to bare wood, re-stained, and re-coated. It was an expensive refinish due to the fact that the majority of the floor had to be sanded with a palm sander to get under the toe kicks of the cabinets; only a very small amount could be sanded with the large floor sander. The crew was awesome and they went above and beyond to help us choose the proper color of stain to match the existing floor as well as replace a badly deteriorated exterior door sill that was not in the original scope of work. Our kitchen floors now look better than the day they were installed. We discovered a couple of very minor issues after the crew finished and Sherry, our project manager, handled them expediently and to our satisfaction. If getting the project done right is more important than getting it done for the lowest price, Slaughterbeck is an excellent choice in flooring contractors. read more

Yes, they are very busy and we had to wait 3 weeks to get the job done, but it was done to perfection. The workers paid attention to every detail. We needed an area of one room to be patched, which required matching to floors that had been installed over 10 years prior. Jim was able to find stock of the old floor, but had to reduce the width of the planks in order to match exactly. This required extra work but his team completed this without issue. The transitions between the old and new floors look seamless. Jim was clear in his instructions for maintenance of our new floors. He also gave us very useful information on the coloring of Brazilian Cherry floors over time; he set our expectations appropriately for how the floors would look when first installed. After the install, we noticed a few areas that required attention (minor surface imperfections). Jim's team returned promptly to address these issues. The entire team at Slaughterbeck has been extremely helpful in providing information throughout the installation process, following up on our phone calls, and closing out invoicing/payment. The team from top to bottom is knowledgeable, helpful, experienced with know-nothing first time customers like me -- I learned a lot, got helpful direction and guidance to make good choices in flooring and carpet. Just for starters. Installation was timely and tidy. 4 years later replacement of a cat-soiled room's carpet was the same -- they had records (and actual human memory) of the job, ordering and scheduling was comfortable & simple. In addition, and of great importance, this local small business is trustworthy: it was a relief to have no second thoughts about scheduling install w/o regard to my being there.
