Rabbi Joshua seemed very nice and intelligent at first and I was really looking forward to this community. However I found out Joshua's character when I told him I was upset about the killings in Gaza. When I suggested that Yeshua's teachings be followed in this situation, he scoffed at me as if he thought the teachings of Yeshua were ridiculous. He straight up attacked me calling me an anti semite (me, a Jew) when I expressed distress over the suffering of the orphans in Gaza and his social media feed is full of propaganda in support of tribalism, a genocidal state, promotion of war, not peace. I later saw him and his wife when they brought their son to a public meeting in Hamden to try to convince the Hamden City Council not to pass a resolution in support of peace (ceasefire). This person does not respect human life and promotes hateful tribal ideology which is the polar opposite of Yeshua, the Christ's, teachings.

The Rabbi has so many talents as a religious leader, educator, musician, scholar, and soul searcher. Some go to pray but I go to question and learn. There is a real sense of community. The Rabbi relates to everyone young and old but has a very special relationship with children. One child called Or Shalom his "Sing-a-gogue." One of the favorite activities is the Rabbi's Sing-along, story telling on Sunday. There are lots of activities, speakers, movies, Zumba, Healing Circle, etc. and an outstanding Hebrew School. Many of the students who have graduated return to volunteer as teachers' aides. Some of them become "teen cantors". Like most synagogues, Or Shalom needs more young families to join. Newcomers are always welcomed.

Everyone was happy. The new building is spacious, modern, yet cozy. The congregants were very welcomming. The Rabbi (on the young side with 3 young children) seemed very affable and had a great singing voice. (I latter learned he had been a Cantor.) The service was relaxed and surprisingly engageing. (At least it surprised me.) We were searching for a synaguge mainly for our 2 boys then 6 and 8. To be continued - My son now 11 is requesting the computer to play his games.

Can't say enough about this synagogue! They offer twice a month rabbi-led services, lay-led services, adult education Bagel brunches with the rabbi, rabbi-led holiday celebrations, a community 2nd seder, social events, a Shabbat school, food schmooze dinners at ethnic restaurants, picnics and many more opportunities for socializing. They welcome singles, interfaith couples and families and those considering converting to Judaism.
