Yelp Review 2025 #178: After pre-gaming at another coffee shop nearby until Confeitaria Colombo was about to open for the day, I stood in a long line at 10:30am with locals and tourists. They open at 11am. I watched as the employees smoke cigarettes before going back inside. They have several locations in Rio but this is the original. There's one in Copacabana, Ipanema, Centro. The hours for each location is different so be sure to check before going. This one is in between Centro and Lapa and has been open since 1894. And is the busiest and more crowded for that reason. The ornate interior design and furniture tell you how old this place is. They have a cinema where you can watch a 7-minute movie about the history of this place. They have plenty of tables and chairs downstairs and upstairs and could fit over 200 people. They tried to fill the upstairs dining area first. You have to take this antique elevator to go up/ down which can only fit the operator and 3 other people. They have 2 elevators. They easily serve thousands of people a day which explains employees smoking cigarettes before the cafe even opens. Each table has a QR code so you can see the menu. I came here already knowing what I want. And since I ordered ever so quickly, the server suggested I looked at the menu for items to bring home like boxes of chocolate, casadinhos (which Google Translate said it meant "married couple" and didn't really help me figure out what kind of food it was), coffee, jams, and teas. I later regretted not ordering more desserts to-go and gifts to bring home. Pistachio Eclair: Out of my 3 selections, this was my favorite. Pistachio glaze and crushed pistachios on top. The eclair is filled with pistachio cream in the middle. 5/5 Pastel de Nata: There's a bragging contest amongst cafes as to whom serves the best pastel de nata. I prefer mine more brown on top with a buttery flaky crust and a warm custard in the middle. Confeitaria Colombo's version checks 2/3 of those boxes. 4/5 Chocolate Hazelnut Tartlet: Brazilian chocolate just hits different. It sticks to your teeth and the roof of your mouth and I'm here for it! I first tried eating this with a fork and knife but it was pointless. Use your hands, it's fine! On top is a large piece of chocolate with the Confeiteria Colombo logo then sprayed with gold. It doesn't have a Nutella-esque flavor to it. The rich dark chocolate flavor is more pronounced. 4/5 There are so many other things I wish I could've tried like Chocolate Mille-Feuille, Dulce de Leche Mille-Feuille, Pudim, Passion Fruit Tartlet w/ Banana, and some of their savory dishes. I'd have to come back here the next time I'm in Rio. The servers aren't the friendliest but they're not rude either. You can tell they're worn down by hours upon hours of serving thousands upon thousands of people that the enthusiasm doesn't reset every morning anymore. The restroom is tiny and fixtures were old too. But it's clean. For the history, the architecture and interior design, for the food especially the desserts - you should come here.

Look you come here because of the space. I mean the food is almost secondary. Just look at the place. It's on a small side street by the way, so you really need to use your Google maps to find it and with most places in Rio no English so a little bit of Spanish or Portuguese would really really help. They have regular food and ice cream, on top of pastries. In my very limited experience here the chicken coxinha, the profiteroles with ice cream, and the strawberry and vanilla ice cream were fine not great but fine. My wife had the amarula coffee specialty that she liked. Your pics however will be fabulous!

Confeitaria Colombo is undeniably beautiful, but the food really missed the mark for me. The coxinhas lacked flavor and tasted bland, and the cake looked great but didn't deliver dry and not very memorable. For such a historic spot, I expected more. The atmosphere is stunning, but the flavors just didn't live up to the hype.

Def worth the drop in.. we heard how nice this place is . And told it's a must see. Upon showing up he saw a line but to their credit... the run like a well oiled machine. The line moved quickly (10 min at most) . Even our orders came out quickly. Everything was fresh , filling, and tasted great! We were all very happy with our food. At the end of our meal we echo got a dessert as that's what they are known for.. and those also tasted great! Def check em out upon ur visit to Rio.

A trip to Rio is incomplete without visiting Confeitaria Colombo. We visited this spot at the fort and it was packed. Every outdoor seat by the beach was taken and a few spots indoor were available. We ordered the brigadeiro, chocolate tarte devoured it and left. The prices did seem high as compared to other places but I guess thats cos they are popular. Overall a good visit in downtown Rio.

Quintessential Portuguese and Brazilian food with an extensive menu. We got espresso drinks and some treats, including the lemon tart and tiramisu eclair. Both were gone within seconds. They also have Brazilian fair which were delightful. Very chaotic inside because it's very touristy but the service was very fast.

The interior of the building is the draw. The food was average and overpriced. The service was also average. If you are in the area this place is worth a visit to snap a picture, otherwise I would pass on a visit here. Be aware this place is located a distance from Copacabana and Ipenema. If you take an uber they will drop you off about a block from the actual location, and the same goes for the uber pickup. The surrounding area did not seem very safe. However, the confeitaria itself was very safe with guards.

The decor of Confeitaria Colombo is outstanding. It is worth the visit for this alone and you'll find fast and friendly service if you choose to get a table. The restaurant also offers photographs when you arrive. I enjoyed the coffee and sweets (a traditional Brazilian chocolate and a Portuguese tart) but they were not the best that I've ever had. Still worth the visit.

This is a painful review to write because this place has been around forever and I wanted to like it. But because of that, I feel that is highly overrated, and the service is very lackluster. We became aware of this place during a walking tour. We came back the following day to enjoy a pastry and some drinks. It took forever for a waiter to even acknowledge us. The waiter who finally came looked highly annoyed. At least that is the impression he gave us. I had difficulty ordering because he didn't speak any English or Spanish, and I don't speak any Portuguese. This doesn't have any bearing on my review. Servers are not obligated to speak my language, of course, but I had to jump through hoops to place an order. He made no effort to help. There was a lot of pointing and me having to take pictures of pastries. I wanted to have some hot tea. He told they don't sell any other than iced tea. I got a cappuccino, which wasn't good. The pasries took forever to come and they were not that great. Also, I kept having to call him to bring our check and he would just ignore me. I know he saw me because he acknowledge me a couple of times but never came by. I had to literally get up and walk to him and ask him to give me a bill. I felt like a Karen but I had been waiting 20 minutes. I was extremely annoyed with this place. It is beautiful though, don't get me wrong but my experience wasn't a pleasant one.

Great spot for a coffee and/or pastry in Centro Rio in close proximity to other downtown attractions. Impressive architecture and good service. Second level has reopened and offers an excellent vantage point.

Iconic place in Brazil we had the best table upstairs in the house. The hamburger was good. The banana split was really good and the atmosphere is unforgettable.

Was not super impressed. Not worth the wait in my opinion. Maybe lunch is better but we dropped in for a coffee and dessert. Our Colombo coffees were super sweet and not super strong. The menu doesn't have the different desserts listed so we had to pick based on pictures we took while waiting in the line. The chocolate cake was pretty dry. We were seated upstairs. It was hot and service was slow.

This place is famous in Rio! We knew we had to stop by. I will say it's pretty touristy here prices could be higher, but it's safe & decent. They even offer pictures aa you enter with the famous background. The place inside looks grand and magical. You line up and wait to be seated. Lots of seats as there also is a top floor to accommodate. We opted to order right when you walk in to take out. This is one of those places you maybe go to once to say you've been and go somewhere else the next time around. Great for the overall experience !

The interior is lovely with colorful decor and a comfortable ambiance, along with a chill, casual atmosphere. We were served complimentary boiled peanuts in the shell, and these were simply addicting! I thought it was a bit strange that there was no steak on the menu, given that we are in Brazil, but I learned this place specializes in Northeastern Brazilian cuisine, so perhaps steak is not so common in that particular region. Since I know I wanted to try authentic coconut shrimp soup, I decided to order that. This dish came with coconut rice and farro (a yellow, fine grainy substance, which was pretty tasty when mixed with the rice and soup.) In the soup, there were a ton of shrimp, which were delightfully tender, and succulent. The soup was full of flavor with plenty of yummy seasoning. The rice was nice and fluffy, but didn't have much coconut taste. I was able to try a bit of one of the nutty tapioca desserts. It was really unique with a chewy consistency, sweet, as well as light. There was a mouthwatering caramely sauce accompanying it. Service was wonderful throughout. We were well taken care of during our meal.
