The staff could tell that my friend and I were foreigners and spoke to us in English very well and offered us recommendation space on our taste buds. My friend picked this spot in Santa Theresa for us to have lunch since it was close to Parque das Ruinas, where we were planning to go next. The interior is lovely with colorful decor and a comfortable ambiance, along with a chill, casual atmosphere. We were served complimentary boiled peanuts in the shell, and these were simply addicting! I thought it was a bit strange that there was no steak on the menu, given that we are in Brazil, but I learned this place specializes in Northeastern Brazilian cuisine, so perhaps steak is not so common in that particular region. Since I know I wanted to try authentic coconut shrimp soup, I decided to order that. This dish came with coconut rice and farro (a yellow, fine grainy substance, which was pretty tasty when mixed with the rice and soup.) In the soup, there were a ton of shrimp, which were delightfully tender, and succulent. The soup was full of flavor with plenty of yummy seasoning. The rice was nice and fluffy, but didn't have much coconut taste. I was able to try a bit of one of the nutty tapioca desserts. It was really unique with a chewy consistency, sweet, as well as light. There was a mouthwatering caramely sauce accompanying it. Service was wonderful throughout. We were well taken care of during our meal. read more

This Santa Teresa restaurant is the best find for a weekend brunch. Located at the roundabout area where the taxis drop off, this rustic café features a weekend brunch buffet with northeastern cuisine. Within the colorful bowls, you'll find a medley of items ranging from eggs with carne seca (dried meat), boiled yuca, boiled plantains, tapioca, and a handful of other satisfying warm treats. There's also an array of meats and cheeses along with a fresh juice station and sweets to fill you up after the savory. You pay the fixed price and then it's all you can eat. The place gets to be lightly bustling, but we managed to score a table with no problem at 9:30am on Saturday. read more

Came here on a rainy afternoon to explore the culture of Santa Theresa. This cafe was recommended by some locals and it's conveniently located next to the open train. We ordered from Brazil classics: Feijoda and Moqueca (spelling?). The Moqueca was okay. Maybe we weren't in the mood for fish. The Feijoda was delicious! I did like the one from a cafe up in Corcorvan where Christ the Redeemerr better. Food aside, I loved the culture and enjoyed just sitting around with locals and people watching. read more

One of the best meals my friend and I had while in Rio. Quite the romantic atmosphere at night and lovely decorations. I love what they were able to do in terms of renovating such an old building to fit their restaurant needs. Very nice place. Great beer selection. Most other tables ordered the feijoador which looked like it was served with the typical traditional sides. We ordered for appetizer the Grude(yuca and coalho cheese fritters served with tamarind chutney). The texture is nice and chewy, very fun to eat. The sauce was perfect. Absolutely loved this dish. Fried just right. My friend and I tried the Rubacao and the Fish of the Day. The portion sizes did NOT disappoint, especially the fish. It was a good size considering fish is usually very light and so I enjoyed the size of the fish. The fish was served alongside something(..maybe rice) but all I truly remember is the sweet plaintain mash! Best thing we ate that night! Don't get me wrong, this was a perfect dinner. We also ordered the tapioca with pumpkin in it. I'm not a huge pumpkin fan but they had such a light and fluffy pumpkin filling, done very well. Also overstuffed--and rightly so! Highly recommend this restaurant if you want to treat yourself well. read more
