This Y in Thousand Oaks was badly damaged in an earthquake and a decision was made NOT to repair it or tear it down so now it sits empty. What a waste! The Conejo Valley only has ONE Y in Westlake. It's a very nice Y but a large area like this needs more than one Y in my opinion! read more

So I have cancelled my membership and am moving on from this YMCA location. It was a good run and I will miss my mornings here and my friends and nice conversations. I am moving my office to Westwood so it is no longer practical to come here in the mornings on my way to work as they do not open until 6am. If they opened at 5am I could stay but that extra hour just does not equate to a doable commute. I just updated my review to 4-stars as the Y has finally responded to some of our complaints. They have corrected the issues causing us grief and seem to have staff here now that are receptive to the members requests. This is a welcome change; so in response I have updated my rating. And thank you for finally removing the locks on the windows so 1) we can get out in an emergency; and 2) too bad we had to endure sweltering Summer with no ability to open them. Now that it is Winter, it's not much help, but nonetheless it is noticed that you all finally responded to the members request. read more

Great facility, beautiful grounds, and a very relaxed environment. I joined here at the urging of my wife. I've been a member of 3 other gyms in the Westlake/TO area and grew frustrated with the all. After the honeymoon phase, all of them turned out to be the same: the fees rise and their pushy personal trainers try to sell you private lessons. It's a joke and a scam that distracted me from what I really wanted... A gym where I could workout anonymously, without drama or judgement, and not feel uncomfortable by the grunting muscle heads. The Conejo Y has fully delivered in all respects. They have a cardio room with large mix of elliptical, bike, and treadmill machines. A separate room with well maintained and modern weight machines. An outdoor free weight section, a yoga room, and a giant pool to cool off after a good workout. The price for my entire family was less than what I was paying for an individual private gym membership on TO Boulevard. Lastly, my teenage boys are able to workout there. The whole family is living a much more active and healthier lifestyle thanks to the Conejo YMCA. read more

First let me say I am a big fan of the YMCA system and I give the employees and volunteers all the kudo's in the world.. But.. The aquatic center can be absolutely brutal on the senses. It is a very nice building with a 5 lane overflow pool, a cooldown/special purposes pool, and a small extension of the main pool. The accoustics here are beyond painful though. I recently went to a swim meet here, and it must have pushed 120 decibels inside with the little girls piercing screams and the sound bouncing off of the non baffled walls. They really need to put some kind of sound absorption system or ceiling hanging pylons in this facility because the sound level is beyond real. I witnessed several elderly people covering their ears at times, and I myself, had to step out from time to time. Great programs I'm sure, but for swim meets, please, be warned and maybe take precautions. read more

I really do like the facilities- the gym is fine. Nothing glamorous or special but it has everything I need in a gym. Love that they have child care available. Love the class options. The one thing I don't love is Conner, the director of the aquatics department. He has got to be by far the worst swim coach/ director I have ever seen. My first experience with him was for swim team "try outs" for my 5 year old daughter. She was the only one at the try outs. He had her jump in and swim a full length of the pool in EACH of the four strokes then tread water in the middle. Fine- I get that to be on a swim team you need to know your strokes but his expectations were completely age inappropriate. Thankfully my daughter had an excellent swim instructor over the summer so she knew most of the strokes but I cannot imagine one 5 year old that could jump in and do that better than she did... and yet she still didn't make the "team". The next experience with him was the icing on the cake. Since she didn't make his elitist swim team, I signed her up for the Shark School, as Conner recommended. She was one of the youngest, if not the youngest in the class and started late in the month so the other kids had already had at least a few weeks of practice. Conner just stood there and kept yelling out what exercises to do but gave no instruction or demonstration of how what he was asking (swimming with the kick board behind their heads and kicking, using a bouy between their legs to keep them from kicking and strengthen their arms, etc). I could tell my daughter was struggling to understand what she was supposed to do but instead of actually explaining it, Conner just stood there with a displeased look, shook his head and pointed to another kid, as if to say that she should copy his stroke. All he needed to do was explain it to her and she would have understood but he made her feel inept and like she was failing. Eventually, she started crying while swimming and therefore started really struggling and gasping for air I pulled her over to the side for a pep talk. Conner came and squatted down right next to me and, instead of building her confidence up with some encouraging words, he just said "do you want to just be done?" Of course she said yes and got out of the pool... and refused to go back ever again. What a horrible example of a "coach". My blood boils remembering this experience. read more

I am so grateful for the YMCA - I've been coming to this Y for 4 years now, first for swim lessons for my son, then for my son's swim team practice, and now for the whole family (swim, running, zumba...). My daughter loves the kid's zone--all the care givers really do CARE about the kids. They engage them in activities and make it a warm and welcoming place so mommy can get in some good cardio! A year ago I was barely able to run a mile (even though I thought I was in shape!) and joining running club gave me the motivation to become a runner. I'm about to run my first 10K! The place is a bit old and while they are continually improving it, there are parts that need attention. BUT considering the PRICE and the helpful staff I recommend it highly. The Conejo Y is part of the Southeast Ventura YMCA system, so membership here allows me to go to the Miller Y in Newbury Park or the Simi Valley Y too when I want options (or newer facilities). read more

I've been going to this YMCA location since I was 13 (I'm 25 now) and I can say: it's solidly okay. I had swim practice here in middle school, which I remember being fun, and worked out here throughout high school, on breaks from college, and after I moved back. The Pros: - Parking. The location is a little weird, but there are 3 parking lots (possibly 4, if you count the "top of the mountain" where a room for classes is). I've only ever gone right at opening time (6am) or in the afternoon before dinner, so I'm not sure how it is at 5-6pm, but there were never issues with parking. Just park in the lower lots - much more room. - The pool. There's "open swim" times for the pool, which is always clean. Get there right at the start of the open time, though, or you may not get a lane. - The atmosphere. If you're looking for a "typical gym setting" with ripped guys in bro tanks talking about how much they lift, this isn't the place for you. But if you're just looking to workout, get healthier, keep to yourself, and not be intimidated - this place is great. Most of the people who workout here are older (40's+, a lot of seniors), which I actually liked because I never felt uncomfortable or like I had to "dress up" for the gym. Everyone keeps to themselves but are friendly enough, smiling or saying hi as you pass by. The Cons: - The hours. They open at 6am, which makes working out, showering, and getting ready for an 8am job difficult. I wish they opened at 5am. - The equipment. You can't do bench press / deadlifts here. Also in the cardio room, I wish they had a stairmaster. - The locker room is always wet/dirty, but I think that's inevitable. It'd be ideal if it was big enough for separate areas for swimming and people who just want to work out, but there isn't, so if you're going to change after working out - prepare for your pants/ socks/ shoes to be soaking wet. The floor of the locker room is always wet. - The lifeguards are inattentive/distracted. - It looks rundown. It fits its purpose, it works, nothing is super dirty or gross... but it's just not a super high quality gym. If you're looking for something high quality with high quality equipment, a big box gym may be a better fit for you. read more

The people are great and the staff is always welcoming and they give off a friendly vive.The gym is always clean and is never too busy to get a full workout in like other gyms are. I wish I can give this place a zero star. I have been too so many swim meets and championship by far this ymca was the worst host . Specially the coach Conner . Very rude and unprofessional. The volunteers are rude and don't know what they are doing . I would never go there again . MR Conner is racist and I don't know how he is the coach . It's time for a new coach and director. read more

My wife signed our children up for a eight week swimming class in 2013 which required a YMCA membership for both children. The total amount per month to be billed to our credit card was $71 a month. At the end of the eight week course my wife informed the administrative people at the front desk that she wanted to cancel our kids membership. Shortly thereafter my wife was diagnosed with Leukemia and my family's world was turned upside down. In February of 2015 I realized that the YMCA did not cancel the memberships and that we had been billed $71 a month for almost two years. We are talking about over $2000 in RECURRING CREDIT CARD CHARGES. I contacted Mr.James Foster, the Membership and Marketing Director at the Conejo Valley YMCA and informed him of the situation. He spoke to the Executive Director (I believe her name is Rochelle Callis) and they were only willing to refund $213 (3 months of membership fees) of the over $2000 they had billed my credit card . This is the absolute minimum they had to refund me due to Visa credit card dispute regulations. I always thought of the YMCA an organization that's core mission is to be a useful resource for the community at large. After this experience, my view of the YMCA has changed. In our particular situation they took as much money off us as possible during our time of hardship. Shame on you Rochelle Callis and James Foster. I am writing this review to alert people to be VERY CAREFUL about the billing practices of the YMCA Fitness & Aquatic Center. read more

Signed our 6yr old up for group swimming lessons which consisted of about 3-4 kids per group. We are finishing up the 2nd month. Feel the progress is extremely slow. The classes are 2 days a week 30 minutes each. The upside is she loves coming! The downside is she still isn't swimming, more like dog paddle. read more

I called the Y Sunday to sign my child up and was told that they did not need my information and to just show up with my child. Forward to Wednesday, I do just that and they say that I needed to sign up in order to leave my child. Epic failure on their part and they barely apologized for THEIR MISTAKE. I have been swimming at a Y since 1952, even became YMCA certified Scuba Diver. This Y earns 5 stars for great life guards and front office staff. Management only 2. The summer camp dominates the afternoon pool hours when the Y and locker room are closed to members 4 days a week. Last week I showed up at the schedule open pool time and they decided to close the pool without notice for 1 hour to power wash the walkway. Driving 12 miles to the Y and find this out is ridiculous. Need a change in management. I sense they have financial issues and are using the day camp to bring in money but limit the use of the Y to members. Need to share facilities and not close down the pool a good part of the afternoon. read more

They hardly have any good machines. The cardio room and weight room are very small. If you ever write suggestions or concerns in their box they ignore it. The hours at night and on the weekend suck. I think this place is only good if your going to take group classes (but they don't have spinning)or have kids you want to participate in the kid stuff. Otherwise it sucks. Also i did go to water aerobics three times just to discover the pool was shut because of a poop incident. I just didn't have that good experience. If you want to cancel you have to go down there, sign papers and give them ten days notice! You cant do it by phone or internet like a regular gym. They billed me too much for three months before I finally caught on when my bank alerted me of low balance. They refunded me what they overcharged but it took weeks. For their expensive membership I expect more. read more

Despite some of the things I've written below, I still think this is a great place for families and individuals to exercise and have fun. I am a currently active member at the time of this review. The first people you will see are the front desk staff. They are generally very helpful and kind. I never feel stupid asking a question and feel, for the most part, that my concerns are taken seriously and addressed in an appropriate amount of time. My membership is mostly for the pool, a 5 lane lap pool as well as a separate warm pool for physical therapy. The pool is a chlorinated overflow filtration pool that grows from 3 feet to 9.5 feet at the deepest point. Great for diving and flip turns. The water is usually very clean and clear, though during the more windy seasons dirt tends to collect at the bottom. The warm pool is one of the biggest draws for this YMCA. It goes from 3 feet to 4.5 feet and is lined with handrails underwater around the entirety of the pool. There are a few upright bars for walking with, and the water is usually above 90 degrees I am told. I have not spent very much time in this pool, but it does seem very popular. The pool deck has definitely seen better days. A few of the equipment storage cases are old, rusted, and literally crumbling on deck. The equipment itself is of solid quality though. They have kick-boards, pull buoys, various pool noodles, aqua weights, fins, and many other items for member's use. There are always lifeguards on duty. Usually two in the morning and night, but only one in the afternoon when I usually swim. The guards seem somewhat attentive, though some are better than others so look out. The ones that get up and walk around every now and then make me feel much safer than those that spend the whole time sitting (at least the whole time I am there). Unfortunately the pool deck can get very hot. This is not anyone's fault, but just it's location up on the hill in direct sunlight heats up the pool area very quickly. Luckily the pool temperature is about 82. The locker rooms at a lot of public facilities are abysmal, but not here! At least the men's locker room isn't that bad. I have never been in the women's so don't ask. The showers are clean and soap is supplied in dispensers on the wall. The toilets and sinks are very clean and the changing area isn't bad either. The other thing I like about this facility is the exercise facility. The cardio and weight rooms are in two separate - AIR CONDITIONED - trailers. Both have water coolers with cups as well. The cardio room houses a handful of treadmills, elliptical machines, and bikes. All are modern and function well. The weight room is mostly machines with a rack of dumb bells. This facility has no barbells though! The machines are almost a good replacement for them though. There aren't usually any attendants walking around to help show how to use the machines, but they all have instructional diagrams on the side. This YMCA does offer personal training though and I have been told they are excellent! Outside of the pool and exercise rooms I don't really know about any specific programs, but it seems like such a large area so there is probably more than just water and weights. Overall, I really enjoy being a member and always recommend it to my friends and family as a great place to improve yourself. Horrible customer service, older facility, was a member for years. My daughter was in camp and they refused to let me wait on the pool deck and watch her swim. This was after I waited for ten minutes to even have someone help me at the front desk. The manager told me to wait for the front desk person instead of helping me herself. The facility recently went through a renovation and it is so much better! I was reluctant to check it out again because when I did a few years ago it was a dump. The child watch was in another building and everything was very run down. Now the exercise equipment is brand new and in a cool, quiet trailer. Everything is in a very close walking area. I can't say enough nice things about the new child watch. I love that it is directly in front of the exercise room so you can hear your kids. The child watch employees are so nice, warm and nurturing to the children. I also love the fact that the class sizes are incredibly small. I was a previous Gold's Gym in Thousand Oaks member and I don't miss the meat market or the crowds. I love that I don't have to get to the YMCA an hour before Zumba to get a spot like I did at Golds. I haven't used the pool yet and it does have a strong chlorine smell. I seems the acoustics are much better. read more

I've lived in Thousand Oaks for over 25 years now and this Y has always been around to serve the community. It's one of the oldest YMCA's around with a huge property. The space overlooks most of the Conejo Valley and has all of the typical quality features you come to expect from a YMCA. Go check it out. read more

There's not a snowballs chance in hell that I'd ever bring my kids here! Their mother spoke with Casie on the phone and got some discounted pricing from her, so I went there today to take a tour of the facilities and asked if Casie was available...apparently this was a difficult question, because the guy behind the counter, Lance, just looked at me baffled with a deer in the headlights stare. So I explained that I was interested in signing my kids up for the summer camp and wanted a tour, and he simply replied "oh I can help you, follow me" and proceeded to walk away without even introducing himself, I had to introduce myself first before it dawned on him that he didn't. He then proceeded to show me the swimming pool, the outdoor basketball court, and less than a minute later we were back in the office and he started handing me paperwork. Naturally, I asked if that was everything, and he replied "well that was the condensed tour." Are you kidding me?!?!?! Do they really expect that I'm going to leave my kids somewhere that won't show me where my kids will be throughout the day under the blind supervision of "deer in the headlight Lance?" I'm guessing California has a tax code that gives organizations tax breaks for hiring people under a certain IQ level, and that the YMCA takes full advantage of these codes, which can be the only logical reason someone like Lance is employed, and sadly responsible for other people's children! read more
