So this place has been on my list to eat for MONTHS. I finally scheduled a stop when I knew I would be driving by and actually remembered. I get there, small parking lot. Walk in around 1pm/130pm or so on a Thursday. The place is empty. They only take cash, but do have an ATM machine. I look at the menu and I already know I wanted the chicken (pollo a la brasa). And OF COURSE they do not have it. I don't know if they already sold out or they make chicken on certain days. I asked when they would have some and they said, tomorrow (Friday). So my quest to have their chicken will have to wait a few more weeks/months. Aaaaghhh... First and foremost the parking is terrible, trash everywhere! They have a dumpster in front of the five businesses- should have taken that as my sign to leave. The restaurant entrance smells like urine, and saw dog feces on the side of restaurant. Again, I should have taken that as a big red sign. I was greeted by a man who called himself the owner and cook. He was rude! And extremely unprofessional. The lack of customer service and the way he expressed himself is not only sexist but inappropriate. Food was cold and it had a weird taste. Lomo Saltado had a lot of salt and pepper to the point where you can't taste anything else but salt and pepper. 2. The Ceviche mixto was chewy and some parts hard. Also way way too spicy. 3. It was taking forever to get the waitress' attention because she was chit-chatting with a customer! They seemed friends and were talking very seriously that didn't pay attention to other customers. One of the best Peruvian spots in the area. I am always a bit concerned ordering Pollo Saltado because many places overcook the chicken, but they did great here! Perfect flavors, abundance of potatoes (wish there were a little bit more of the sweet onions), but overall perfect harmony. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the kick of the aji verde sauce. Most other places mute it so it's not spicy, but yay this place did not. I'd be even happier if they made it spicier. The yelp page states that it's street parking only, but the're actually situated in a little shopping center with about 10 parking spots. We were heading back home, and we were hungry for Peruvian food. We stopped by this place because it was near where we were. Came in around 3 and it was empty. I ordered the lomo saltado OMG= my palate was dancing. This dish was full of flavor!!! I still think about this dish everyday. Lol. No joke. My hubby ordered a noodle dish that had meat and rice in it. He said it was really flavorful and the portion was huge. My son ordered the rice dish, looked liked a Peruvian take on a fried rice, and he devoured it in minutes! And the portion was also huge. The owner was very friendly and made sure we were taken care of and enjoying everything. All in all- great food & great service. Prices are def fair for the quality and portions of the food. Dined here over a week ago with my friend, who was born and raised in Lima. We ordered a few dishes to try and to see how they compare to the other places such as Los Balcones del Peru and Puro Sabor. This place is definitely a hole-in-the-wall, a small restaurant with about 10 tables, located at the end of a small mini-mall as well. The staff is polite and can be attentive. However, you will need to be patient when the place is crowded/full. The day we went, it was packed, and only 1 waitress handling the front of the restaurant. The dishes were ordered included a fish ceviche, a tallarin verde with steak, rotisserie chicken and a shrimp fried rice (had to try this out since I'm Chinese, and I am always curious to find out how Chinese cuisine made its influences with cuisines from other parts of the world. In fact, chaufa (term they used for fried rice) is a play off the Cantonese pronunciation: chow fan. The ceviche was tasty but a bit disappointing as the texture of the fish was a little soft and chewy, and indication that's it's not fresh. Even if it's frozen, it could have used more time thawing out and having some of the moisture dabbed off of the fish. The chicken (pollo a la brasa) was good but not as tasty as the Peruvian restaurants that specialize in pollo a la brasa. It was just missing that smokiness in flavor. My friend says the fries that came with the chicken were done just as they would in Peru. The tallarin verde (spaghetti with sauce of spinach and basil) over the beef steak was the best dish we had. The sauce was tasty and the steak was marinated well. The shrimp fried rice was good, specially since they don't use the industrial sized woks as you would find in Chinese restaurants. They use a smaller version which still was able to give the dish some "wok hei". Overall it was a very nice first experience, and I will definitely be going back again since there are so many more items on their menu that I would like to try. After reading the Yelp reviews, I bookmarked this restaurant to try sometime when I was in Los Angeles. Since I was going to a play not too far from here, I went here on Sunday night (5/26/13). I only had Peruvian once before and I wanted to explore more of the cuisine. I started with a drink of chicha morada. Peruvian chicha is made from boiling purple maize with pineapple and spices, notably cinnamon. It was a very tasty, enticing and refreshing drink. Before the drink was brought, a basket of bread was delivered and along with it was brought a bottle of aji and spicy green sauce. I squeezed this on my bread and it was so good! For the main course, I ordered tallerin verde con pollo. It was a lovely dish of green Peruvian spaghetti with pesto sauce and a full grilled chicken breast on top. It was excellent. The chicken was juicy and the pesto, aided by using more aji, was excellent, something new. Of course, one can't have a good dinner like this without some sweet. I ordered an alfajor It's a type of cookie filled with dulce de leche and dusted with powdered sugar. It was quite good and it was a perfect ending to a super meal. The restaurant only has about 8 tables. The parking lot is small and there's a small grocery so finding a parking spot can be dicey. It was full when I drove in. I tried the side street but with many people having Memorial Day cookouts, the spaces were all filled. back to the plaza I went and I found a spot that hadn't been there a few minutes before. Persistence pays. Eating at Con Sabor A Peru was so worth it! read more
