The park features benches, a sprayground and playground equipment with a full court basketball court. It is not too well lit at night. The playground honors Ramon Aponte who as president of the West 47th (now 47th/48th) Street Block Association started the process of of turning what used to be a vacant lot into today's playground. Ramon Aponte, who had lived nearby since 1950, organized a group of concerned citizens that saw the transformation of this lot into a park as an integral step in the rejuvenation of their neighborhood.  With the financial support of local developer Lewis Futterman, the playground opened in 1979.  Aponte retired to his native Puerto Rico that same year, but the community recognized the impact of his efforts and named the new playground in his honor. She said they eventually will have an ice skating rink between the buildings where she's employed. I believe she said 33rd and 9th Avenue. This whole area blends together in my eyes. My daughter has a friend already working in a High Rise above the Shopping Mall. I need to go back for the day. I'm sure I could spend several days in the area and never get close to seeing everything. You're close to the river, the High Line, Shopping, Arts, Entertainment, Expensive Residencies, Food, the NYC Parks and more. I'm posting some photos I took in the vicinity. If you're interested in visiting an up and coming neighborhood this is the place everyone is talking about.

I talked to a long time residents who told me they complained about this in the 60s so the civic authorities thought of possibly building parkland on a parking lot on Tenth Avenue between West 47th and 48th Street. On June 23, 1966, the Board of Estimate approved the acquisition for $400,000 to acquire the lot in September 1966. But the conversion was delayed the playground did not open until December 1979. The West 47th Street Block Association try and keep out any undesirables and make the park local community residents and those tourist type and office workers who want a nice spot to chill. The park was upgraded with 1.4 million dollar grant. Just proving green in NYC doesn't come cheap.

This playground features some really cool climbing structures. One of them is a brick pyramid that kids and adults can climb up. It features a really large slide or a ladder that puts you down in the middle of the structure. If you're small enough there is a tunnel one can use to get in/out. There are some other structures like another pyramid with two slides. When the weather is warm there is a fountain. I love the soft material on the ground that surrounds most of the playground. It helps soften any falls that young ones may experience.

Make sure to repeatedly warn your child of paying attention to kids running wild in all directions. Parents seem to be MIA... The playground is quite modern... there's even a half sphere kids can climb on (bare feet, or it won't work). Plenty of swings and climbable options. The place is divided into two areas for children of different ages... both very crowded (did I mention that?). There's a slide kids can use after climbing over big rocks... not the safest option when there are too many kids lining up (and pushing each other) to do it. With little else around to have your child move, this is the forced option. The silver lining is that you're in freaking Union Square, with all sorts of food (or booze... you may need some after a visit to this place) available to you.

This park also has clean sprinklers at the feet level and big sprinklers that come and go. Very clean and safe. Most important thing is the safety issue. I have a stroller with belongings and they were untouched the whole time I was in the park so that's a plus! Also this park is gated from the public and only families with toddlers and kids can go in. Very family oriented. Will definitely stop by more when I'm in this area.

The day I visited there were many Nannies with small children going in and out of the gate. It's a place I will not enter unless I'm with a friend that has small children. There's bucket and tire swings, an amphitheater spray feature, two granite slides set into a hill, a rustic net climber, and a sandbox and sand table. Slowly trying to hoop at all the basketball courts in the city, so I came here after work before a…read morelong weekend. We were on our 4th game of 5 on 5 on this slanted, slippery court with double rims as the Midtown skyline looked over us. We had gone 3-0 and already on wobbly legs but wanted one more to really push ourselves to exhaustion and be WHOOPED. A group of 5 17 year olds showed up and I was lowkey like damn I don't wanna play these little kids for our last game but whatever, they got next. We were going back and forth, and to be fair they were actually pretty good but just too frail to give us any problems. At 5'10 174 lbs, I'm a BIG guard. I'm left handed, but shot a right handed floater fading to my right as I'm trying to get better. If you can hit a weak hand floater on the run you will be tough to stop. I bricked it and this little 17 year old kid goes "that's a TERRIBLE shot" looking at me dead in the eyes. Like bro y'all are losing and you suck why you talking? He woke me up and I started actually trying really hard and lowkey busting their ass... but tbh normally I'm not even that good. It was just one of those days where everything was falling. I hit a 3 and yelled out "THAT'S A LAYUP." I drove hard left, euro stepped and hit a tough finish through 2 and yelled "I"M TOO BIG," while flexing. I switched onto little homie and he took a terrible stepback shot after I turned him 3 times and bricked it. I just whispered to him "I don't even gotta say nothing after that one it speaks for itself" which really pissed him off. Then I hit the game winning 3 and did the Dame wave to him as he walked off the court PISSED as hell. I sat down and then he got the courage to say "STOP TALKING SO MUCH" while he put his hand together to mimic me YAPPING. I almost stood up and said "HOW BOUT U GET WIN?" But then I realized I'm a grown ass man and there is absolutely no reason to be jawing at this little kid on a beautiful Friday in New York City. I just kind of laughed at myself and asked what is wrong with me lol. All in all, these runs were kind of weak and this court is in horrendous condition.
