I brought a lens to Competitive Camera to have a dented filter ring removed because I wanted the work handled professionally. Instead, the ring was forced off in a way that left visible damage to the front filter thread, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid by bringing it to a camera shop. When I asked why the lens had not even received a basic external clean, the employee blew on it and said, "there." The new filter does screw on, but the visible damage to the thread area and the dismissive service were extremely disappointing. I would not bring delicate equipment here again. read more

I was visiting Dallas and stopped in at Competitive Camera to see what camera bags they had. In the past, I've purchased a number of camera bags (Peak Design Travel Bag, Manfrotto, and Vanguard), and sadly, I have never really been happy because either they're too bulky, too stiff, the bag is awkward, or the functionality just doesn't work with my gear how I want. Unfortunately, I don't have a camera shop like Competitive Camera where I live, so I haven't really been able to test things out, like you can here. Scott helped me for most of my time in the store, and he was so helpful. I tried a few bags in particular: ThinkTank's Airport Commuter, Tenba Axis V2 24L, and Gura Gear Kiboko 2.0 30L and 22L. I am from Albuquerque, so the Gura Gear bag appealed to me because of the zipper system and fabric on the bag. I also have very hairy dogs, so this fabric resists their hair better than most traditional camera bags. It also weighs less because of the material Gura Gear uses. Overall, my experience with Competitive Camera was fantastic; I couldn't have been happier. I highly recommend them. For cameras and lenses, they stock Sony, Canon, Nikon, Leica, Fuji, and Olympus. I've been coveting a Canon R6 for quite some time. I wanted to hold off purchasing the RF lenses and continue to use my current glass but in order to do that, I needed the EF to R adapter. They were at least a week out online and I really wanted to make sure I could find one before spending the $$ on the camera. I called Competitive Camera and they had the adapter in stock. They were busy when I walked in but they still took the time to greet me. I walked in and was warmly greeted by the owner. I asked him how light can I get a tripod. I travel by air weekly and need something that will travel well. He pointed me to an excellent product and explained every aspect of it from memory. He even tried to talk me out of buying an extra accessory that he thought I probably didn't need. This is the best camera store I have found in the DFW area. They have a large selection of the major brands and are knowledgeable them as well. The prices are as good as amazon and since we know have to pay tax there is less of an advantage to buy it out of state. I was interested in a couple lens and had my camera body with me. They let take them out side and shoot with them get a feel for the balance and the overall quality of,the lens. Since I have the images on my SD card at home I was able to compare them to my existing lenses. These lens are not cheap over $1000.00 and both with tax will cost over 2k. Because of their knowledge and letting me work with the lens I will be back to pick them up in the near future. They fit my needs and I prefer to support local businesses if I can and they go the extra mile. read more

I had read that Competitive Cameras was one of the best camera shops in the US, so I was thrilled to know it was in Dallas. I have shopped there twice in the past month and have purchased my first mirrorless camera, two lenses, and a backpack. All of the purchases came with a lot of help from the staff, who were there to answer lots of my questions. An interesting feature was that with the purchase of the camera came an hour long private lesson on how to operate the camera. This was worth the weight of gold as this camera was much more complicated than my previous one. In researching cameras and lenses I had discovered that it did not matter price wise where you purchased each was the same within a few dollars, so why shop at a big box store when you can come talk to experts that will actually help you and know what they are telling you? I'm a little torn. I can buy my gear online these days, but going to a store usually provides the staff that can provide an extra opinion or guidance that you can't get otherwise. I'm in the process in possibly upgrading my kit and was hoping a store like this would help provide me with options I haven't considered or maybe talk me through the pros and cons of my various options. Didn't really get a lot of that, just some shrugs and a "yup." If you don't need any help and just want to walk in, buy your gear, and get out, this is the place to be. From the gear perspective, they have tons of it from all the major brands. I guess I should read a few more articles on the internet and do my own research before stepping into the store? Seems everyone else has had a good experience so maybe I just went on an off day, who knows. I was being interviewed/interviewing a potential wedding client who also happened to be the guy who purchases all of the camera & video gear for National Geographic. We got to talking gear. I was long overdue for an upgrade. The groom-to-be sang the praises of the Canon R5 and his gear connect in Dallas - Competitive Cameras. He had me at camera nails focus at f/1.2. So, the next morning, I called Eugene at CC. This is a business in which a live human answers the phone on the second ring. I ordered up 2 of the R5's plus two adapters for my Canon EF lenses, and a 35mm RF lens. Within a few days, a UPS guy handed me a huge box with all of the new toys inside. I'd been a loyal B&H customer since the early 1980s, when I bought my first camera - a Nikon FE2. But I self-poached to Competitive Cameras and within the past year, I've purchased audio gear and augmented my lighting kit to include a pair of Prophoto A10s, which are bloody awesome, and some modifiers and widgets that attach stuff to stuff. Competitive Cameras is well-stocked with pretty much anything and everything you need for still photography and video. Don't live in Dallas? Not a problem! I'm in DC. CC will free-ship to you. If I lived in Dallas, I would probably drop by often to chat up the staff and lust after the inventory of cool gadgets. I returned the equipment a day late, and they charged me the same price for three days. The sales representative(might be the owner) was very rude in person and on the phone. I drop thousands a year on equipment and one simple positive transaction could have resulted in more business. The representative was dismissive, seemingly annoyed with my questions and eager to get done with the transaction. Also, they reached out and asked me to change my review, claiming that I didn't understand the term of the rental. I picked up the equipment on Saturday and was asked to return it by Monday at noon for $27. I wasn't able to return the equipment by noon on Monday because of all the chaos surrounding the virus. I replaced the equipment Tuesday and was charged double(additional $27). Perhaps I did misunderstand the rental terms and was under the impression that I was renting the equipment for three days(Saturday - Monday), but that doesn't change the behavior of the staff. Also, I found it super aggressive that they took the time to figure out who wrote the review, go to my business website, send an inquiry asking me to change my review. It's just not a good vibe. While visiting Dallas a couple of weeks ago, I found myself in need of the latest firmware for my camera (the manufacturer had made many improvements as compared to the version I was running). Unfortunately I hadn't taken the appropriate kind of card reader with me on that trip, so couldn't download and apply the firmware myself. I emailed Eugene and asked if they rented card readers or provided firmware-update-as-a-service, and he got back to me right away -- and just asked that I take the camera to him. The next afternoon I did so; 10 minutes later, I walked back out of the store with my camera, now running the latest firmware. I'd heard many stories about the sexist and condescending way Eugene deals with female customers. But I never saw it in person until recently. My wife are both professional photographers and needed some items at the last minute recently. We were driving separately and she got there before me. When I walked in I saw she was at the counter with Eugene and was ready to buy a few items. He was asking her very condescending questions in a clearly, overt sexist manner. I stood there thinking WTH? My wife looked like she was about to jump over the counter and rip him apart. I touched her arm and led her away. We walked out and didn't buy anything.
