Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and experience, but I think it is important to look at the full picture before criticizing a school for things such as not having janitorial staff or experiencing maintenance issues. Chinquapin is a nonprofit school that does not receive the same state funding as public schools, and with that naturally come challenges and limited resources. My son began attending Chinquapin in 2024 under the leadership of Ms. Mily Pérez. I cannot speak to what the school may have been like before then, but I can speak to the experience our family has had from 2024 forward and it has been an incredibly positive one. The students at Chinquapin are academically challenged and taught valuable real-life skills. They are expected to take responsibility for themselves and contribute to their school community. They are not babied, but they are supported. This is far from a military-style campus or an alternative school for children with behavioral problems. Chinquapin is filled with bright, driven students, and there are high expectations for both academics and conduct. Misbehavior is taken seriously, and accountability is part of the culture. It sometimes feels as though educators cannot win. If they do not care enough, they are criticized, and when they care deeply and hold students accountable, it can be viewed as overstepping. Personally, I would rather have educators who genuinely care about my child's education, character, and future. During Ms. Pérez's leadership, she did everything within her power to address concerns, including HVAC and maintenance issues, as quickly as the school's resources allowed. Running a nonprofit school without state funding is not without its difficulties, and I believe that instead of allowing those challenges to define Chinquapin, we as parents and members of the community should help share its story, advocate for it, and help bring in the resources and funding needed to ensure it continues serving students for generations to come. I am extremely grateful for our family's experience with Chinquapin and for the impact the school has had on my son. I hope that under its new leadership, the school continues building on the progress that has been made and becomes even stronger. Chinquapin is a unique place with an important mission, and I truly hope our community continues to support it.

They were the directors at Chinquapin for about 30 years. The intial idea was to provide quality education for low-income students like myself at the time. Similiarly, to the affluent schools like St. John's School in the Upper Kirby area in Houston. In fact, the founders of the school were Bob and Maxine Moore who intially worked for St. John's at the time and decided to open The Chinquapin school in 1969. The Chinquapin School was a safe haven for me when home life was complete chaos. My English teachers at the time saw a lot of potential in me and pushed me to write and excel in my writing and academics. I am the first woman to graduate high school in my family. I am first woman in my family to graduate college. I am the first teacher in my family. Currently, I teach English I at Yes Prep Public Schools (I have been awarded by the state because of my STAAR scores). I have read some of the recent reviews on here. And clearly based on those reviews some things have changed due to the leadership and the culture in recent years. However, I have enrolled my son here and this will be his second year at The Chinquapin School. He absolutely loves it. The school now has a new director, I believe her name is Chelsea Korth.

They have a rule that the kids have to buy an 18 dollar sweatshirt before a certain time or your child has to be cold at school and they wonder why these kids are falling asleep in class because its's extremely too cold. I don't like saying anything bad about this school because they are great but some rules just don't make sense. Everyone can't afford to pay 18 dollars for a sweatshirt by a certain time. If the kid is in uniform that should be all that matters. Then you have the kids who do have the sweatshirt telling the kids who don't that they have to take their jackets off like they enjoy seeing them being cold. I don't like it and they should do better.

Kipp staff have been strong and helpful throughout this whole pandemic and I salute them all for all of their hardwork and dedication to our children. I want to give a special shoutout to Ms. Perez who was teaching 1st grade last year and now switch to 3rd grade. She is an amazing teacher. I hope next year my daughter is able to be back with her. I highly recommend this school.

During the past 10 years I have watched the level of education decline and some of the best teachers leave. The administration has always been very biased, but I never thought I would see it at this level. They LIE, misrepresent parents etc. Several students/parents will now be faced with going before a judge due to their poor education system and lack of management. I cannot believe how this school has gone down. I to waited for several hours for administrative personnel to complete my child's paperwork. They truly have my respect, not only as teachers.. but as thinkers, innovators, and leaders in education. The curriculum is challenging and encourages an understanding of the liberal arts and sciences, balanced by the values of forgiveness, love, and understanding deeply rooted in Christian belief systems. Their Scottish Arts program is unbelievable to see and I am constantly amazed at the artistic abilities of the students who have been encouraged over the years by the school. My daughter, who deals with sensory issues that affect her learning, has always been treated with the utmost respect and has been encouraged to embrace new ideas while being challenged by proven methods of teaching that instill an understanding of the world around her while teaching her to effectively communicate those ideas. I am not an alumni and I was only aware of the school through long time friends. But, having faced the challenges of the current public school system with our oldest child, my wife and I came to believe that a private school was our only acceptable option for our youngest child (and any future children). We explored several private schools in Houston and decided on St. Thomas' based on a tour of the school and talking with faculty and others who knew of or had experienced the school. Also, I believe that the tuition is quite reasonable compared with other private schools in Houston that we considered. We intend to keep our 8 year old at St. Thomas' through 12th grade and we plan to send our 3 year old there as well when she reaches school age. I would also encourage any parents considering a private school education to meet with Mr. Cusack and the faculty and see it for yourself. I believe that you will like what you see.
