I thought it was great when I realized they were renovating this space several years ago. As I entered the lobby, the box office was a line of windows in front of me, but I noticed folks checking tickets by the stairs to my right. Turn out everyone is funneled through the stairs even if our seats were the prime spots in the Orchestra section. First thing I noticed were the painted walls. They were cool, and a more modern touch than the elaborate engravings of many of the other theatres in the area. It also is a cozier theatre. But there were enough room between seats that I didn't have to stand just to allow other row-mates to pass by me. My seat neighbors told me that the balcony is terrible for hearing - I believe it since even from where I sat in the third row slightly off center, I had a little trouble hearing the actor furthest from me. Fix the sound system, and they would earn my 4th (fan) star easy. *** 9/2013 *** Attended Potted Potter - The Unauthorized Harry Experience, a Parody by Dan and Jeff - and I had a good time. A.R.T. was founded in 1980, and it's been an important professional, not-for-profit theater since its founding. It's gone lots of Tony awards and other theater accolades to show for it. Our experience was great. The play was outstanding. It was a treat to see that cast in such a unique, timely play. The theater was intimate, and there's not a bad seat in the house. The line for the bar and bathrooms wasn't bad. And it just felt like a special theater experience. A.R.T. is moving soon - to a new theater: the David E. and Stacey L. Goel Center for Creativity & Performance in Allston. While I think it's too bad that the theater's new location won't be as accessible by public transportation (it's now just a short walk from Harvard station), but I'm sure it will be beautiful facility. I'm glad I got to see this incredible production in Loeb Drama Center before they move in 2027! A special and unique place for theater if you're lucky enough to find yourself in Boston. If you can go see Rhinoceros before it closes, you should!

The staff are all friendly and happy to help. They offer a nice selection of snacks and drinks to purchase that you can bring into the theater. They also validate parking at the information desk after you scan your ticket. There's plenty of great restaurants nearby to have dinner at before an evening show - I try a new one each time I visit the ART. Plus, cannolis from Mike's Pastry are nearby, so no need to travel to the North End!

All of the ushers and ticket scanners were super friendly and helpful, and the lobby is pretty, with white walls and a beautiful staircase leading up to the mezzanine. I was first seated in Row K of the Left Mezzanine, and the view was very good. The slope of the seats was great enough that I didn't have any heads in the way of my view of the stage. They also had a large screen so I could get a bigger picture of the stage. My husband and daughter were seated in Row G of the left orchestra, and I was able to join them as there ended up being an empty seat. The view from the orchestra was great, and again, I did not have any heads blocking my view. Sound was also perfect from both the orchestra and the mezzanine. The women's restrooms were large and were downstairs from the orchestra seating. I did not have to wait in line - there seemed to be enough stalls to accommodate the sold out show. the men's room is on the orchestra level, and I think there are additional restrooms on the mezzanine level, and accessible restrooms on the orchestra level. Parking is available at a couple of nearby garages, and The Shubert Theatre staff will validate your parking ticket so you will get a discounted rate. Be sure to check the theatre's website for the specific parking garages. We had a very pleasant evening here at the Shubert and I would love to come back.

The biggest issue with this theater is the seats, they're small, close together and squeaky. When watch a show that is only acoustic guitar or piano, it became very annoying that the seats would squeak any time someone stood up to leave. It became a joke during the show because it sounds like "someone is playing clarinet" and at time "the clarinetist was just punched in the balls". Also, any time someone in the aisle needed to leave, everyone must stand up to let them out, thus more squeaking. Also, bathrooms are downstairs and stairs were steep. If you're disabled this would be a problem. The good here is that the acoustics were solid, entry was easy and staff friendly.

It was excellent! I didn't know who the Who was and had just seen the Lion King so my mind was made up that some stupid student production at Brandeis would not be topping that...I was so wrong. I was on my feet clapping at the end of the show. Not the most talented bunch but reflective of the Brandeis student body: not great looking but hard-working and charismatic. We both love theater and met doing improv with the UMASS Amherst group Mission: IMPROVable. We were delighted to learn of a theater within walking distance to our new house and bought tickets to see the show. The production was well-paced and hilarious, and we were impressed with the welcoming atmosphere. I became involved with the theater almost immediately, appearing in the 2003 New Works Festival and working backstage for their production of "True West." My husband was also in a production that spring. We have remained involved with Acme ever since. We have both been given the opportunity to expand our skills (him: directing, me: stage managing and producing) and count our Acme "family" as among our closest friends. I can't imagine life in Maynard with Acme Theater.
