Charming little coffee shop on the IUP campus. I really enjoyed the ambiance along with the vibrant colors and decor. They offer a wonderful selection of drinks, along with a small assortment of sandwiches, wraps, and pastries. I tried a peppermint mocha, but it tasted more like a standard mocha without much peppermint flavor. On the bright side, I appreciated that they use fair trade coffee, and all the cups, lids, and sleeves are compostable. The staff was incredibly friendly and quickly prepared my drink. Although we were just passing through, I love exploring local coffee shops wherever I travel! read more

I had some time to kill in Indiana while my boyfriend was on groomsmen duty. I planned in advance to check out Commonplace because I enjoy ours in Pittsburgh and knew it was started in Indiana. I was surprised to see it's in the middle of the IUP campus, but there was ample parking which was a nice surprise. The space was really cozy and filled with plants. The staff were friendly and kind, and they actually bring out your order to the table if you're sitting down. The coffee was delicious as usual but I do have a suggestion for the breakfast sandwich--the egg patties being used are not good. There's something too thick and rubbery about them that was just hard for me to eat. Otherwise everything else about the sandwich was pretty good. I was able to get some work done and enjoyed my time In the space. Great little coffee shop when you're looking for one in Indiana. read more

Commonplace Coffee - House coffee & bacon/egg/cheese - Coffee Roasteries Near Me - Indiana, Pennsylvania

Nice little spot in a college town to sit and visit and enjoy a cup of Joe. Commonplace is a good roaster of beans but the barista the last two days does not know how to make a wet cappuccino. Don't order one! read more

There is a serious lack of charm and heart at this location. A decade ago Commonplace was THE coffee spot in Indiana. Sure, the storefront was never anything fancy. But the owners/management seemed to go out of their way to create a warm and inviting environment. This morning I stopped in to Commonplace for the first time in maybe 4 years. Clearly, they now are a roaster with a coffee counter. The website doesn't even list menu items, only wholesale information. The menu was small. The baked good selection was not large. You could chose between a muffin or pound cake. Big choices! They had no speciality lattes or the like. The entire experience was very transactional. The staff was kind enough. The coffee and tea was fine. The muffin tasted like it had some coconut alternative in it - but that wasn't specified. Maybe it was just strange. In all, I'd skip Commonplace if you were looking for a nice spot to spend a little time drinking a coffee. If you like the roast, buy the beans and skip the sad cafe. read more

I recommend their baked goods! They're always really yummy and fresh. I also enjoy their smoothies a lot.

The place itself is amazing, very warm and welcoming! I got a pumpkin chai latte and my sister got a honey lavender matcha, both were very tasty read more

A great product in an odd location with ample parking. I would return! As you would imagine a coffee shop just in a mostly empty two story plaza. Parking lot accommodates most. The lower levels of the plaza has a vape shop among other stores. Upstairs in the large building is the coffee shop. Lots of tables inside and more seating outside the shop but still inside the building. I recommend sitting inside as the hallway is drafty. The barista was pleasant and there was no line on a weekday evening, though there were many students in the shop. We each got a coffee (a delicious variety from El Salvador) and biscotti and sat down at a thin table made from a single plank of wood. The biscotti was easy to bite and it was tasty... apricot I think. This is a convenient place to get a great cup of coffee and a tasty treat! read more

I love this place! It has a calm peaceful atmosphere that's conducive to conversation or reading. I particularly like the iced tea made with Tea Pigs English Breakfast. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the high prices (albeit no more exorbitant than Starbucks while Commonplace's products are far superior) read more

I'm a huge fan of the coffee here. I've actually only been to the campus one a handful of times, but the kiosk at IRMC was my go to place (due to working there) The staff was ALWAYS so kind, polite and went above an beyond for us employee's. The baked goods were always fresh and delicious. read more

I think it says a lot about a company when everything is stacked against them but they still seem to be on top of the bean hill. What I mean is this - Commonplace Coffee near IUP should not be thriving like it is. Do not take that the wrong way as if the coffee is not one of the best I have ever tried in any state, but instead call back to the old adage of, "location, location, location" is everything. Consider these few things. Covid had blocked students during the academic year from being on campus. The shop could not have people sit in the dining areas. The shop itself is in the back of a not-so-used section of a plaza. It takes some minor effort to drive through the unpopulated university to get to. I was educated on this specific struggles and where it is 100% true that if the shop was just out a little more things would be more lucrative, I recognize that this company has something much more backing it than location. Call it what you will, this company is out front for a bigger purpose. The soup to nuts operation include an upstream responsible sourcing of coffee beans where farmers are paid a more than fair price for their product. The company puts customer experience front and center even before coffee barista experience, because at the end of the day the person in front of them is what is most important. The manager is serving alongside the barista and keeping the flow of the business day moving swiftly. The service, quite frankly, is impeccable. Pricing is incredibly competitive with a $4 Latte, which is a work of art and by the way, Oat Milk is free. Commonplace takes you away to a special place....a common place where everyone is welcome and causes you to pause and realize there is beauty in life and we are all in it together. read more

This review hurts me to write because for years, Indiana's Commonplace was my favorite place to be. I've been a customer here for nearly 10 years, spent many late evenings working here, met some of my closest friends here. Commonplace got me through two degrees, sometimes stopping by 3 times a day for caffeine. If I were writing this review between 2010-2017, it'd be 5 stars, no doubt. However, I've noticed a decline in the past few years. Was it the upgrades in the store? The customers changing over time as they naturally would in a college town? The products? Maybe a mix. The past three times I've been here, my orders have been wrong (hot instead of iced, missing or wrong syrup), which isn't necessarily a deal breaker. However, I now live considerably further away and have to intentionally add time to a commute to come here, only to be given short answers by the staff, stared at when I asked questions, and then given the wrong drink. I will always cherish my history with Commonplace Indiana, but I think my time as a customer here is over. read more

Brace yourself for a hipster comment: I've been coming to the Commonplace since before it was cool. But let's be honest, the Commonplace was always cool. I just mean I've been going to the coffeeshop since 2010...2009 maybe? It's undergone some renovations since then so it's nice and freshly painted. All of the seats sit sturdily on the ground, but it's retained its extremely chill demeanor although there are many more patrons in house nowadays. Today, I was especially satisfied with my Counter Intelligence. Historically I've gotten the Milky Way Latte, but I wanted to try something new. At the recommendation of my barista I got a mocha with chili syrup. It was so delicious - I couldn't stop drinking it. I think I finished it in less than five minutes. I also got my mom a coffee (which I neglect to remember the name of) and she couldn't stop talking about how good it was. All of the good coffee bean flavors without the aftertaste. Later in the day I was trolling Instagram and found that they use a Clover which is a fancy machine that makes coffee taste amazing. Case in point. To sum it up, I love my little hometown coffeeshop and I'm glad to know its not just the memory of good times here, but also that they're baller baristas, constantly honing their craft. Way to go Commonplace! read more

I got hooked on the Commonplace early in my college days at IUP. Being a commuter, I would spend countless hours each week in the coffee shop working on my laptop while drinking infinite amounts of coffee, espresso and specialty drinks. Their coffee sets the bar, as far as I'm concerned. I have always loved trying the different blends they roll out. The shop has changed over the years. No longer do they do their roasting in the shop, as they now have a warehouse in Indiana where that takes place. The coffeeshop is still a cozy, quiet place to meet and talk, write, do homework or just socialize with the always friendly staff. Living in North Carolina now, I still make it a point to visit the shop in Indiana each time I'm home and have coffee shipped to me here in NC. read more

The coffeehouse of my undergraduate career - it's wonderful. When this place opened, it was an opening to a new kind of social environment that wasn't the drunkeness of most of the campus. And the owners fostered a new communal atmosphere, much in the way coffee shops do, gaining a loyal fanbase. Their coffee is pretty spot on - plain coffee, americano, and lattes are awesome. They also do ridiculous coffee shakes (like almond joy and others) that appeal to the sweet tooth and are basically the best comfort food. Many times there would be a day i'd need a shake in order to feel better about the day - and Commonplace always delivered. If you're passing through Indiana, PA, stop by this place for a drink. It'll show you a different side to the town than you might have seen before. If you life in Indiana, make sure you end up here at some point - perhaps to read a book, relax, and enjoy a nice space for awhile. read more

Commonplace coffee has the best coffees, I often order myself an iced latte with an in-house made syrup. So addicting!

Yep, 5 stars all the way! Best coffee and Roastery you'll find, in town and out, as CC&R has slowly expanded its small business into both the local medical center and even the Pittsburgh suburbs. Conveniently located in University Square on the IUP campus, you can never enter here without seeing numerous students working on their laptops (free WiFi) while sipping a latte or locals comfortably congregating on one of the big couches with a specialty drink. I recently had the opportunity to stop in here again to enjoy a Milky Way Latte and blueberry muffin and everything about this cozy little shop was exactly how I remembered it, for which I was thankful. It's hard to believe Commonplace has been around for nine years already, but I give a ton of credit and praise to T.J., Julie and all of their employees for making their dream such a popular, community staple. Thank you and I wish you continued success. read more

Best craft coffee in town! TJ and the staff here get it right. The best espresso in town!!!

Only been there a few times, but my drink was great each time. Not burnt like most places like to do. The place is pretty much what you'd expect: an incredibly hipster coffee place for the college kids too indie to go to Starbucks. Not that there's anything wrong with that... Really cool atmosphere in the place itself, although the outdoor-style seating in the lobby-type area is a little awkward and strange, although that's not really their fault; it's a bit of an awkward (yet really interesting) building to begin with. read more

One of the best coffeehouses in the country is in Indiana, PA. They roast their own coffee (during my college days, it was in Indiana but now they've expanded to Pittsburgh) and it's exceptional. I always looked forward to seeing what the daily brew would be. Their staff is friendly and talented. You don't feel too pressured to hurry. The cons: I used to be evangelized to at this location quite often several years ago. I'm glad those people have either cooled it or moved on. The students can get a little overwhelming, especially during finals. It drives me a little nuts when people are hanging out or bring food to microwave when they aren't customers just because it think it's discourteous to the business and the other customers. None of these slight cons are the fault of the owner or the staff. I just wanted to present a balanced view of this place. The Commonplace will always be a bittersweet reminder of my times in Indiana, PA. It's a local institution and I hope it carries on in that tradition for years to come. read more

Atmosphere is great, very cozy and warm, great place to study or just hangout for hours upon end. Unfortunately, their coffee beans and espresso are very acidic and sour. That is more of a personal taste issue though. I ordered a cappucino and got a latte. It had latte art and barely any foam. They have some food options, a bathroom, and free wifi. They are fast, considering only one person is usually behind register. Overall, lots of potential and need to work on mastering the flavoring and quality of the drinks. read more

Commonplace is a hidden treasure in Indiana, PA. You have to hear about it from someone else, but if you are lucky enough to wander into this cute coffee shop you will immediately be amazed. Inside is the perfect environment for studying, catching up with friends, or just escaping reality for a little bit. The lights are dimmed, the music is calming, and the baristas are friendly and talented. The coffee is great too, with so many options, including an extensive list of creative lattes. We went to this adorable coffee shop while staying at the hotel, a stone's throw away. The staff was incredibly helpful. The prices are very affordable. I loved the relaxing and welcoming environment. The coffee was great! I'd definitely come again. read more

Best coffee and espresso in Indiana. Their homemade syrups are really good, orange spice is personally my favorite. If you're getting a latte for the caffeine fix just get a small.
