Gin is not my preferred liquor, but these extremely well crafted, balanced, flavorful drinks have me wondering if my previous feelings about gin were totally misinformed. The Big Apple (featuring Bath Gin [what they make here], hopped rhubarb Bath Gin, apple schnapps, escubac, lime juice, and tonic) is really refreshing, but it's the Little Italy that I felt the most feelings for: Bath Gin, coffee-infused campari, cocchi torino, and apricot liqueur. The presentation is straight out of a magazine, the ingredients are all delicious, and it packs a serious wallop. "In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." Is that too much for a drink or a bar? Ahhhh, you'll see what I mean when you check it out. Upstairs, The Distiller's Bar, has more gins and cocktails but I never made it up there. They do have a few bottled beers (and Peroni on tap) and whiskeys and vodkas if you're not a gin fan... but why wouldn't you be?

I love small, ambient, out-of-the-way places frequented by locals, and the Coeur De Lion fit the bill perfectly. Although we sat outside in the (unseasonably warm and sunny) April air, with a light breeze gusting through the rather narrow alleyway, my traveling companion and I became absorbed in the delicious flavors of our dishes, our engaging conversation, and the pleasant warmth of a perfect spring afternoon, tuning out the foot traffic (and most of the rest of the world) behind us. The best Shepherd's Pie I had the privilege to enjoy during my stay in the UK, and don't kid yourself, I ate a lot of Shepherd's Pie. Looking a bit like an over-sized, savory cupcake, resting on a nest of mashed potatoes and drizzled in gravy, I couldn't have been more satisfied with its crisp, flaky crust and tender, lean cuts of meat.
