Rustic cafe and bakery. I really liked the builing: looks like a house from outside, two levels with a second floor patio, very colourful. The barista that took my order was friendly enough. I tried a sugar-free raspberry peach muffin and a chai latte. I really liked the muffin - it was dense but soft and very moist. Lots of juicy fruit. I will say that if "sugar-free muffin" is something that sounds appealing to you, you will probably like this, but if not, it's probably not for you because the texture was quite different from a regular muffin. But I liked the wholesome flavour. The chai latte was just the standard, but made well, with a very generous dusting of cinnamon. I got there shortly after they opened and just had to wait in a short line with my drink ready fairly quickly, but they were much busier by the time I was leaving. We''d gone surfing earlier in the day and hadn't had time to eat a normal breakfast so we were famished by the time we made it to Common Loaf Bake Shop. We dropped in on a Thursday afternoon (around 1:15pm) and were greeted to a line out the door. Be prepared to wait; service is incredibly slow and inefficient. We were in line for half an hour and waited another 10 minutes for them to make our order. The menu is split into breakfast (only available to 1:00pm), grilled sandwiches (only available to 3:00pm) and hot drinks. They also have a small selection of pastries (bread, muffins, baklava (randomly) and tarts/cakes/bars). - Ham sandwich ($7.95) - at least the bread was toasted and the cheese melted. Other than that, decent but you could easily make something similar at home. I was still hungry afterwards. - Vegan hummus sandwich ($8.25) - the hummus was light and caramelized onions subtle. This place is to epitome of what I imagined the west coast would be, plants everywhere, reminders to bring reusable cups and reduce napkin usage, and food to be enjoyed slow. There is ample selection of home-style baked goods and the hot food was varied with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options! We tried the breakfast sandwich and sausage burrito. Taste wise, I would say average taste (3/5 stars) and quite worth it for the price (5/5 stars). The sandwich filling had a good ratio of sauce to veggies to ham and I liked that the burrito came with sour cream and salsa. Everything was made with love and care. Overall a cute shop with something for everyone. I really wanted to give this place more stars but the food took SO long to come out (we are talking 15 minutes for a sandwich and breakfast burrito). read more

I am not a local customer. But I am happy that this bakery opens early and it has some really delicious pastries!!! I had their chocolate croissant, ginger scone, and cinny and honey bun!! Me and my friend loved all of it! It's not too sweet and the texture is good even we eat it cold. It's a cute bakery shop that is very convenient if you want some quick treats. Where do I start? Breakfast of course. The servings are generous and the quality excellent. A little slow is getting the orders in but doesn't seem to effect the popularity of the place. Busy little coffee shop. It seems very popular as there was a line up the entire time we were there. There was only 1 person behind the counter taking orders and handling the cash. There is a very small eating area inside with 3 tables and customers are were spraying the tables down and cleaning them for the next customer as there is no staff to handle this job. We had a cinnamon bun, a cranberry blueberry muffin and coffee. The food was okay. It was nothing special. We're unlikely to return. Came here end of their business day around 6pm, and they were actually closing up early already (they close at 6:30). I ordered from what was remaining, the Almond Raspberry Scone and the Apple Cinnamon Muffin. I initially only wanted one muffin but the server recommended those two, with one as a midnight snack! She provided the muffin at their day old price since it was end of day. Jokes on them because I ate both of them in one sitting... midnight snack ha! The Almond Raspberry Scone was okay, I couldn't really taste the Raspberry. The Apple Cinnamon Muffin was great though. read more

I was here this morning, such a cute place wonderful baked good and warm drinks.. Though my only complaint would be, that the guy working at the front was quite rude.. My lil sis and I were staying in an Air B&B near this eatery. So, we decided to have our breakfast there...LONG LONG line up and very slow service! We ordered 2 breakfast burritos and waited over an hour to get our food...The cashier told us the wait time was 15-20 mins...but waiting over an hour is just unacceptable! We ordered 2 cups of coffee but they had run out of milk and cream...the coffee station was filthy too...I will not return to this eatery ( I would rather eat instant noodles). OH EM GEE!! The Peasant bread was delicious! I could have eaten a whole loaf. We got it with our farmers breakfast but I couldn't finish anything on my plate except the toast. In retrospect, I should have just gotten toast with jam. The baked goods were okay.. but I wasn't a fan of the bran muffin. It was too doughy and I swear it wasn't fully cooked. The baklava on the other hand was to die for! The food was great though. My only regret is that we discovered it on our last day in town. Came here after our whale watching tour with quite an appetite, as I had skipped breakfast as I get seasick easily. Felt like something sweet and went for one of the humongous muffins (peach & pecan) and a mocha. My boyfriend had the chicken pesto panini. The muffin was light and fluffy, with lots of peach and pecan inside. It could have been a touch sweeter for my taste, which was a surprise (so often it is way too sweet). But overall it was very nice. The mocha was great, as was the chicken panini. Service at the counter was a bit chaotic but in the end rather quick. Bought one their baguettes as well. Adorable zen hippy feel inside this place! It served my coffee needs just fine - they had tasty drip coffee and all the soy milk I wanted. We sat upstairs and looked out over the street and water - I couldn't think of a better place to start the morning. We didn't eat anything but all the baked goods looked delicious. The first time I went to Common Loaf, I ordered the Veggie Panini, and even though I was first given the ham by mistake, I am still giving this place 5 stars because it was THAT good! The chipotle mayo on that sandwich is among the most delicious things I have ever tried! We visited twice during our week in Tofino. The food was ok, enjoyed the sausage breakfast burrito on the first visit. We both had grilled cheese sandwiches on the second visit and they were served on huge slabs of sourdough and hard to eat. The coffee was good, and I understand the need to charge for refills when compensating for loss of revenue through Covid protocols. What I definitely do not understand is the lack of customer service from the guy behind the counter. I am assuming he must be an owner. Both visits, he was loud, arrogant and rude. Three days in Tofino = three breakfasts here. We were staying just around the corner from this bake shop, and the chocolate croissants came highly recommended, so coming here the first morning was a no-brainier. We were greeted by a homey atmosphere, the smell of freshly baked goods, and a line out the door. And indeed, we were mighty impressed by those croissants--chocolate and almond alike. Over the next two mornings, we ventured further and further. The muffins were delightful, with the banana pecan ones being my favourite. We also picked up a bag of day-old bread for some sandwiches while on the boat later that day, and those cheese breads really came through. On the final day, brunch was required and time was in short supply, so a Chicken Pesto Panini it was. Although what I received was most definitely a sandwich with grilled bread and not a panini, it was hearty and filled me up well for the drive to Nanaimo. First restaurant I tried in Tofino. The full breakfast was tastier than the breakfast sandwich. The bread and bacon are delicious. I had a double americano as well which was just perfect! This cafe was excellent for a gluten free treat, tasty coffee and comfortable seating for working. I was impressed with how many gluten free options were available here! The wifi was fairly decent for work, but there aren't many outlets if you need a charge. So if you're traveling through Tofino for work like I was, just bring your laptop charged as I couldn't find an outlet. read more
