This is the most abusive, least professional experience with a CPA me or my husband have ever had…read more Today, I was listening to a phone conversation between my husband and one of the founders of BTAS, Paul Totaro, who is without a doubt one of the least professional people in this industry, and I was floored by Paul's behavior. During this call, Paul yelled at my husband - berated him, really - for daring to suggest that the communication hadn't been ideal to date, instead of listening and attempting to explain or fix the situation to our satisfaction. After several instances where Paul or his subordinates hadn't bothering showing up for scheduled meetings, an almost complete lack of responsiveness to email communication over the course of literally several months, and at least half a dozen redundant requests of us from new names at BTAS that kept getting added to conversations in lieu of old ones (apparently they have a lot of turnover in their employee ranks, and I can see why) to connect them with our bookkeeper - apparently no one had saved records of our conversations in files that would have eliminated redundant work for my husband, which is kind of one of the benefits of hiring a CPA firm in the first place - we felt we needed this call to clear the air, and politely inform them that we were going to switch to another firm for the remainder of our tax work. But that's not how it went. After we mentioned this, incredibly, Paul went into a fit of rage and yelled at my husband "well we don't want anything to do with you either!" We felt like some authoritarian principal had called us into his office to berate us, rather than what was really happening, which was us politely firing a service provider that we thought was at least prepared to be professional about it and, who knows, maybe could have some introspection about the situation as a company who failed to meet at least one client's expectations (seems like, from reviews, it's way more than one, however). We came to BTAS with high trust through someone who used to be involved in their day-to-day client relations. I see that their only positive review to date references this person, but unfortunately that review is old and since we started working with BTAS, this person stopped working day-to-day with the company. That is where all our problems began - once we got kicked to Paul and the revolving cadre of his subordinates. I hope no one else has to experience this, and if this review can dissuade others from getting trapped in this sort of abusive professional relationship, only to be left late into tax season to start over, then I'm glad I posted it.

It's rare to meet an individual who is willing to do so and make an unpleasant experience, a better one. As such, I will leave this review open for change, and hope to update it for the better based on future interactions. On the plus side, I believe the firm conducted an accurate filing for us. On the other hand, there was a significant difference between initial quote and actual invoice (which the owner offered to rectify).

So, I reached out to my accountant friend who reached out to her bro who suggested this place! Of course I went to them -- they're Vietnamese and close! I called, made an appointment (they're open 7 days a week!) and it took me less than one hour to finish up my taxes. What a relief. The person who signs off on all the paperwork is Mr. Huynh. He has front-end staff that inputs the information and then he goes over it with you. Huynh gave me some tips regarding my retirement investments and after shuffling around some $$, I shaved off $1300 -- that's $80 well spent in my book! I normally do my own taxes, but if I have another year with more documents than usual, I am coming back here! I'm pretty sure their clientele is mainly Vietnamese but why would that stop you from coming here? LOL.

She wanted to check whether I had received an email from Samantha so she gave me a name to search for. I found it so I pointed out that the email did not give any indication of a business response and I was waiting for a phone call, not an email as Sue had promised. This company has good intentions but poor communication issues. Dana seemed unaware that her folks could text so I pointed out that the text messages (through Yelp) had been flawless. I told Dana that I would upgrade my review from 1 to 3 because of her follow through. Dana waited a reasonable time before making a follow up call. She asked me if I got her emails and I said no so we did the search thing. I searched for her email and it came up "Executive Assistant". Talk about a spam flag! Sorry Dana, that's an email I would never open without an advanced "heads up" warning.

He has actually pointed out different scenarios that I could start taking advantage of for future filings. Over the past 5 years David has made a FEW mistakes in regards to communication...S#%t happens. I told him- he apologized- case closed. I WOULD recommend David to others who are subcontractors/1099 etc. Just remember though, HE IS A TAX GUY. I tell him every time "I hate being here!" My tax preparer Spencer missed…read moresubmitting a W-2 for 2021 and when I filed my taxes in 2022, the IRS contacted me to let me know of the mistake and now I have to pay the IRS over $8,000! Since this mistake was brought to light, Spencer did not return any of my calls or emails. I then called the office and spoke to Frank who assured me he would take care of it. This happened last year and here we are months later and this issue is still not resolved. Every time I call their office number, all I get is their voice message and despite leaving messages, I've not had not one call returned. They have a portal to which Frank has answered some of my questions but when I messaged him on Dec. 8th to ask about the status of my payment, I've yet to get a reply. I just called this morning again and YET AGAIN, the answering machine came on! Looks like I will be handling this directly with the IRS. Worst service I have ever received from any tax preparer. This is a family run business so you are not gonna get anywhere with Spencer, Frank, or Laura! I am forced to give them a star in order to publish this but that is not because they deserve 1 star.
