Comic Quest is the best board game store as far as I'm concerned in South OC. I'm not a huge comic fan, so can't really comment on their comic selection, but they have the widest selection of board games of any local stores, the staff is friendly, and the store doesn't have the offputting vibe that some gaming/comic stores do. If I had a minor complaint, the board game section isn't the most organized and is a little cramped, so it can be tricky to find what you want. But it makes up for it by having so much to offer! read more

Sadly I forgot the names of the two gentlemen that helped me out, but they did a great job pointing me in the right direction and suggesting other fun board games. The shop is amazing with a huge variety of comics, board games, miniatures and everything else in-between. The best part is definitely the staff. Everyone is always so happy and helpful. Came here a couple of times, and the customer service has been underwhelming. First time here the guy working there did not know where anything was in the shop, and told us that the title I wanted wasn't even released yet. After rummaging through the shelves and finding the title, he simply said "oh, you found it". Speaking of the shelves, the non-DC, non-Marvel shelves look a bit haphazardly organized compared with other shops. The second time I came, I wasn't even greeted, and there was no other customers in the shop. It wasn't until I came to the register where I heard the first words of the employee there, who only said the price and that I could not pay with a credit card because of the $5 limit. If you're in the area, I suggest Nuclear Comics. If you are willing to drive a little bit, I definitely suggest Comic Toons and Toys instead. read more

I stopped in tonight with my kids, and I have to say it was a fantastic experience! First, the fact that games were happening in the store made for a lively environment! Second, the selection of comics and games were incredible. We spent a lot of time just wandering around seeing all the different titles and game options! Third (and definitely not least), the employee on duty (Matthew) was incredibly friendly and helpful. He was able to answer questions about the comics and games, and was excited to share recommendations! Also really good and patient with my kids, especially my talkative 8yo. Bottom line, if you are looking for a good comic or game shop in the Orange County area, look no further than Comic Quest. read more

I dropped by here again recently and it's the same place. This spot is just a bunch of gimmick games, maybe 25% of the store is actual comic books while the rest is toys, decorations and board games. The worker was nice to me, so that was pretty cool. I'd imagine anyone who has a wheelchair would have trouble getting around in here, but that didn't bother me. I was kinda disappointed because this isn't an actual comic book store, this seems more like a Dungeons and Dragons kinda place with the idea of a comic book store out there. To me this felt like a skate shop with all the skateboards mounted to the walls, and they're selling weed on the side. This isn't a place to visit if you're looking for comics, this is more of a table top gaming place. read more

Clean store. Well organized. Disappointed when I was told I could only view key issues, which are kept in reserve in the back, on Saturdays. I understand security, however I was not given any alternatives. As an older collector, I wasn't interested in anything modern. I did not feel helped. The customer before was trying to sell something and he received more attention than me. Maybe it was racially motivated with my skin color and the masks. So maybe not your store if you are looking for your HTF. However even minor keys were well overpriced for condition. read more

Comic quest is great! The staff is always friendly and there is a huge selection of comics, board games, and miniature games. In addition there's a dedicated space for events & gaming. If you like board games Thursday nights are open gaming with no venue fee! Plenty of food options available nearby as well. If you are Fan of a particular games like D&D, Guild Ball, or Magic the Gathering you can join facebook groups to get connected with other players and coordinate game days. We have a pretty varied Guild Ball group and we'd love to have you join! The atmosphere is very relaxed and I stop by often after a long day just to wind down and chit-chat with the staff. Love stopping by Comic Quest. The place is in a great location with ample parking. The store is broken into 3 sections. When you first walk through the door you're in the comics and figurines section. They have a great selection of comics and new comics are always against the back wall displayed. Some of their better quality figurines are in glass cases and displayed. So awesome to see. The second section is miniatures and board games. They have a great selection of miniatures, paint, and so many board games I didn't know existed. Also picked up full set of CAH there. NOOICE! The third section is for table top gaming and is in it's own separate room. So you don't have to much noise flooding into the rest of the place. They have a lot of tables, and the people there are really friendly. I've joined in on same games with people I've never met. And it's just a great place to hang out. read more

Comic Quest has found the secret to great customer service, which is not too difficult to understand. Everyone I've ever spoken to there has been friendly, courteous and attentive. They have a great selection of comic books and gaming supplies and are always quick to answer a question in a thorough and informative way. I've been frequenting this shop since it was down the street on the other side of El Toro. The customer service wasn't always stellar, but it used to be a bit friendlier. The man with the dark beard (I've been told he is the proprietor), seems to scowl at people, or at least me while I'm in there. I had an issue where I had bought a Trade Paperback that I already owned. I discovered my mistake once I was home and came back a few days later to ask very kindly if I could at least exchange it for another (thus was the first time I'd ever even thought about returning anything here). I can understand why they have a policy of no returns-someone can read the comic and try to get their money back when they are done-so it was actually very nice that the man with the beard agreed to let me exchange it. However, once I was looking for the item of exchange, every time I looked over, he was glaring at me. I bought more than I intended to, $50 more than the exchange, but still felt vilified during the process. I even thanked him and the female employee who was ringing the transaction several times to ingratiate myself for my mistake, though should I have really? I've spent quite a bit of money here over the years on manga, comic books, and board games, but felt absolutely terrible leaving the shop after spending $50? My job is customer service, so I know that's not a great way to make a customer feel to ensure they return-it's just bad business sense. I may come back, because I love being able to physically look at items that I wish to buy for my hobbies, but I may just turn to the internet where I won't have to feel badly for an honest mistake. read more

I was just in the store and was looking to make a quick purchase for a maze of ith (MTG card) that I saw in the case. There was not one, not two, but three employees standing behind the counter and none of them acknowledged my presence as I stood there staring at them for at least 2 minutes. At one point the fat older employee actually made eye contact with me and then continued his conversation with the two younger employees. This store has some of the saddest customer service/employee observation skills I have ever seen, and it wasn't like these people were busy working. Overall, the store is a reflection of the employees. It is in the back of a cul de sac near the freeway. It is dark, dingy, and looks closed as one of the doors had a gate in front of it. The store is cluttered with way too much product and the only redeeming thing was the back gaming room. The selection of mtg singles is pathetic even though they have signs for mtg all over their building and event days specifically set for mtg. This is a competitive market for mtg in SoCal, and magic and monsters and game master are by far better options. Don't waste your time or money (if they give you the chance to spend it) in a place like this. read more

I love comic quest! Whether it's comics and comic-related merch, tabletop games, MTG, they seem to have everything. Their boardgame inventory in particular amazes me, and I love it that they do events like the weekly Boardgame Night when you can come, try out and learn some games, and meet other players. I have been coming with my kids for Tabletop Day for the last couple of years and can't say enough about the shop. The staff is friendly, the stock is great, and the events are fun. This place should be called anything but comics. Like there previous location they gradually drifted from comic books to games. I was attempting to look at their back issues, I was looking for ALIENS comics, however the woman stocking placed her merchandise box on top of the back issue long boxes. I moved her box to access the back issues. She said something snarky under her breath and proceeded to stock the merch. I asked if she could had any back issues of ALIENS 3: THE GIBSON SCRIPT. She rolled her eyes and replied "I don't carry ALIENS comics". Like their previous location, I left feeling empty and unfulfilled. I hope the gamers have a better experience than I do. These people need to stop using the comics moniker and have the confidence to stand behind their only interest, roll playing and board games. read more

This place has everything you are looking for. I was looking for d&d groups and was not welcome. I really like the spinny dice machine. They have more miniatures in one spot than I have ever seen. This place is my home away from home. I started going here almost 10 years ago for comics and now I mainly go for TTRPG supplies and dice (if you are a dice fan, this place is heaven). The selection of tabletop games is great and maybe overwhelming for a first time visitor but there are always people nearby to help guide your search. The staff is always friendly and helpful and I have never left empty handed. I see so many other customers welcomed back as they enter the store and seen friendships form. Between their amazing staff and their events, this store does a lot to foster a warm and strong community. Oddly specific side note: I have brought fellow girls who never felt welcomed in other shops before to Comic Quest and they always feel comfortable as soon as they step inside. This place is truly a gem. My one critique, in the summer it gets really hot and they put out large industrial fans right near the door, do not wear a dress if you dont want to flash someone. read more

Hmmm.... Well, actually I don't really know Comic Quest, but I thought I would give some history for people like JT and Andrew. Little Billy's Funny Book Store opened in July of 1982. I should know, I am Little Billy! I sold it in 1986 when my favorite employee Don Allen, had to take off for a couple of years. I was so happy when I found out Don bought the store from the people who bought it from me. I did not have all the games Don brought in. I was strickly comic books, so always commended Don for seeing the curve in front of him. I will be down for my 30th high school reunion next year. This would also be the 30th birthday for the first comic book store to open in south Orange County. read more

To be fair, I'm not a huge comic book fan. I know enough about it to like or dislike the story lines, but I don't know enough about it to be able to say "yeah that one is pretty good because of this" and "the art work is from this guy." I just know when I come here, the guys explains to me why some comics work and some doesn't from their perspective. The guy doesn't do it in a condescending way, he does it in a way that informs me. If the guys did do it in a condescending way, I'd hope they do it in the voice of comic book guy from the Simpsons. I bought the Watchmen here because the guy recommended it and told me of other comic books I might be interested in. He rang me out and I went home reading the book I purchased. That's what makes me a fan of this place. Nothing complicated. No one in my face. Just friendly service. read more

Not impressed, the guy behind the counter is a splitting image of the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons same look, same attitude, almost entertaining I was trying to introduce my kid to comic books and its been a really long time since I was into it... he had a GREAT deal of knowledge almost troubling but hey if you love what you do right....he seemed bothered by my questioning and he kept answering his cell phone to talk about what else but comics, when I would wonder the store he would just stare at me with the "look" kept coming back cause they were the closest to me, every time they would run out or have the bent issues by the time I showed up which was within a week of the release date really irritating the older comics were expensive compared to what I found later at different stores and they were mixed up all the time had a really bad selection of back issues. it got to the point that I really didn't say much when I came in to buy comics not to hate but I never really had a great experience here it got to the point that I gave up trying small talk for some reason I would come here when the same guy was working and I tried to come different days and times I would rather take a drive to Nuclear Comics in Laguna Niguel or even better Comics Toon N Toys in Tustin (this place is great) read more

I'm approaching this review as a casual comic book browser and part time gamer. Yes, what Nuggie stated in his review is true; 1/2 the store is dedicated to gaming (though not just warhammer, I would say over 75% of the game side is devoted to boardgames, RPGs, open gaming space, and hobby supplies) . The comic area was open had a good selection of titles to browse (again, I'm not a collector but I purchase a few issues frequently to keep up). Their gaming selection is also quite well stocked and I'm quite satisfied with it. Comic Quest's staff is also friendly and supportive, and I'm happy to go back anytime. They've been in business over 25 years so let's hope for another 25! read more

This is a nice medium-sized shop right off the 5 Fwy. (right near the 405/5 interchange). Half the store is comprised of gaming items (ie. Warhammer figures, D&D) and the other half are the comics/toys. Lots of recent comics on the wall and a table of graphic novels near the entrance that are on sale. The back issues are priced a bit higher than retail (if they sold them at cover they'd probably clear them out more often). There's a good bargain bin section of comics for I think .35 cents that I pulled a good amount of 52 and Countdown a while back that helped me get back into comics. Good to stop by and pull a few of the cheapies to use as readers, too bad they mark the UPC code with a marker to differentiate them though. Overall a nice shop and the sales people are pretty nice and I hear them chatting with the customers standard comic-store nerdy news! read more

Plus much more. Their prices are perfectly reasonable, and the selection is the best you will find in a 15 mile radius. Staff is always friendly and knowledgeable and always willing to work with their customers. Management knows how to take care of their patrons.
