Positively Records - Great, varied selection

Positively Records

Positively Records absolutely lived up to its name. I'm visiting from California and stopped in…read moretoday with my son, and we were immediately struck by the great vibe of the shop and the genuinely positive people running it. Super welcoming, no pretension, just real love for music. The clientele was friendly too. We ended up having some great conversations with other diggers about what we were flipping through, which always makes a record store visit memorable. The selection was better than I anticipated, with a really solid mix of new and used records, and the prices were more than fair. Highlight of the visit: scoring a near-mint copy of the 1977 first pressing of Foreigner. Couldn't have been more fitting to buy it today, with "Cold As Ice" on the tracklist and a windchill of -8 outside, it felt meant to be. If you're anywhere near Levittown, PA and love records, Positively Records is 100% worth the stop. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town.

While in high school and college in the early 90s, this was one of my go-to places to get music. They still have a great selection of many different music styles. I was able to find a few great hard to find titles. If you can't find parking right outside the store, there's a big lot across the street at the supermarket. It's worth the visit to support this small business!

If you're anything like me you forgot these stores even existed. Well we better think again and…read moremake sure they stay in business. We're having our basement refinished and I decided to offload my DVD collection. I was just going to drop it at a thrift store. However as I went through the titles I kept thinking about how much I've wasted creating a well rounded collection. I started thinking I wish there was a way to make some money back off this "investment". I called a few pawn shops to no avail. Then a friend suggested FYE. I didn't know if he was joking so I called them. The associate said come on in! So I took in over 100. Sold 64 and made $60. It was cool going through the stack with her and seeing what they would and wouldn't take. Seeing what they'd pay. They snatch up anything Marvel or Disney. If you have a copy of Mel's Apocolypto you can get $5. It's out of print. Anyway FYE pay your employees more. They are cool.

Real shame, workers there were lovely but it was getting old waiting in line with the same excuse…read moreover and over again. There would be a line going half way through the store and we'd spend an hour in it, why? Internet wasn't working. Last time I was in there the internet was just completely down and that was about two weeks ago during the start of their going out of business sale, reason they are shutting down? No internet to run the store. Completely ridiculous. All my anger goes to the people running this business, can even give a store the proper means to keep it running. Utterly ridiculous.

The name is certainly fitting, considering the madness of how much supply is here. Boxes stacked…read moreupon boxes stacked upon boxes everywhere you turn. There are sooooooo many comic books scattered around that I'm pretty sure Wade doesn't even know what he has. Sure, sifting through all that inventory can be overwhelming, but that's part of the fun. Each trip is different as the staff uncovers and prices additional stock from the shipments of yesterday (and yesteryear). So, it's like a race against time to see what gems you can find before they even realize what they have! Allow yourself plenty of time, though, because it is very easy to get lost for hours as you comb through the bins and boxes of eras and stories gone by. But that's why I love it. Unfortunately, there are some things I wish they could do better... like with their pricing, which isn't always consistent. Some books aren't labeled or in a designated price box. So then you're left up to the discretion of whoever works the cash register that day to determine what they want to charge for it. I also used to be a big fan of their VIP program, which, for $15, offered some discount on almost everything in the store. Plus, a $10 credit on your birthday month. So it paid for itself and then some. But as I recently learned in my last few visits, this isn't always the case. It's really left up to the discretion of whoever is working the register that day whether or not they want to honor it. ‍ But the staff is still very polite and helpful and I do enjoy coming here. It's one of the better comic stores in the region and has been that way for years. If you're in the area, check it out!

Princeton Record Exchange - Store front

Princeton Record Exchange

Princeton Record Exchange is the kind of place that convinces you the past did not entirely lose…read moreit's argument with the present. Walking in makes me feel like I'm stepping back into the 90s, when music required effort and curiosity and a willingness to be wrong about what you thought you liked. They have everything. Records, tapes, CDs, and yes, even DVDs and VHS tapes, like artifacts from a civilization that understood patience. The selection is not just large, it is deep in the way a good conversation is deep. Jazz standards sit comfortably alongside obscure classical recordings. Somewhere nearby is a Japanese scream band you have never heard of but suddenly feel compelled to investigate. What makes the place work is the staff. These aren't people who ended up here by accident. They're here because they love music in a way that can't be faked. Ask for something familiar and they will find it. Ask for something strange and they will find it too, and then suggest three more things you didn't know you needed. It reminds me of the record stores I grew up in, back when discovering music felt like a small personal victory instead of an algorithm handing you a suggestion like a fortune cookie with better branding. Streaming may have made everything available, but it also made everything feel the same. This place resists that. It insists that music is still worth searching for, still worth holding in your hands, still worth talking about with another human being. Go here. Spend more time than you intended. Trade in something you hope others will discover as you once did. Leave with something unexpected. That's the whole point. Five stars, and I don't give them lightly, because enthusiasm is a finite resource and should be spent where it matters.
