We found it at Travanse. The Generations Director loves the residents, is responsive to our family needs, and seeks to be available and visible for all residents and their families. The nurses and caregivers are very kind, loving, and respectful to our mom. As a result mom feels content, comfortable, and safe. While no place is perfect, Travanse Living at Grayslake certainly comes close! We recommend it!

I decided that if there was good evidence she was happy and engaging more, I could be willing to wait another week and see how it goes. See if she adjusts more. Unfortunately, I noticed her wedding ring was gone along with some necklaces she permanently wears that have sentimental value. Her debit card and credit card (both were already deactivated prior to intake but kept in her wallet to make her feel calm) were also missing from the slots in her wallet. Also, several other low value items like bed sheet set and personal care. This makes me think the missing ring and necklaces aren't just lost. They were likely stolen. The wallet has card slots so, someone went in the wallet and pulled the 2 cards out (again, deactivated cards but, looks like someone took them to try and use them). They told me not to bring valuable items and I didn't bring any cash or other jewelry but I didn't expect for a wedding ring that has never left her finger and necklaces she never removes, even during showers to be stolen. Let alone things from her purse. Lastly, the place has not even offered to make good on the wedding ring value They billed me for a second month ( per their policy) even though she was only there for 7 days . I di file a police report. So, I;d think twice before letting a loved on in this facility.

The Sunrise staff truly excel at ensuring the well-being of their residents. They go above and beyond to meet the community's needs. The facility is well maintained, vibrant (even amidst challenging Covid conditions where they had to think creatively to offer group activities), and the management staff is active, visible, and engaged in the day-to-day community operations. The Director is an excellent communicator, she is fair, and willing to think "outside the box" to find solutions. I highly recommend this place for your loved one!

After close to two years of frustration, numerous meetings and not seeing any changes I met with Sunrise. I decided to move my mom to sunrise even though we were in the middle of COVID. If was the best thing I ever did. Not just according to me but also according to my mom. Sunrise has it dialed in and all the things that used to frustrate me are gone. The CNA,s have spent time getting to know her. My mom says she feels like they really take an interest in getting to know her. My advise to anyone who is looking for assisted living in the area, don't be fooled by the shiny penny. It is the concern and care for the family member that is most important. My mom has been at The Laurel for about 3 months. We researched other memory care facilities and…read moreThe Laurel has by far exceeded my expectations. The building floor plan is set up for the dementia Alzheimer mindset. Many walk, but they can't get lost, because all paths lead to the main common area. This gives residents comfort. I am glad this is a care facility that does not use agencies. Each staff member treats residents for where they are at in the disease process. I normally have all guards up, but when I walk in there, they are genuine, and make you feel like you are part of their family. This has brought great comfort to my father, me, and my sister for the care of our mother. We learned so much from the director, asst director, front receptionist, and if you do not know what the definition of empathy is, go observe The Laurel's staff. The staff gives it their all and by watching them, it has made it easier for my family to accept the disease my mom is going through and how to find her in her world and be a part of her life in this horrible disease. They have functional and non-functional activities, and the patience the staff has, is beyond. We all sleep well at night knowing she is in the best care possible. Everyday is different with Alz/Dementia, and they tweak everything to each resident's day. Who are my favorites, every single worker there is, they go with the flow and monitor each resident behaviors and health, and address any issues fast. Everything they do, they try, if it doesn't work they try something else, and they let me know, and I am able to participate to help. They keep the family notified. The facility is so clean, cozy, and most importantly simple and safe! Because sundowning is a big part of their day, they have a psych that works with this part of the disease to find the right meds. I used to come in with my head down, bc I knew how mom was at home, but they do not judge, and they honestly look at the good parts. They have support groups there that help the families cope and accept what is ahead. Because my mom is high functioning, they use her strengths and she helps others which gives her self-esteem and a sense of purpose, and all staff works with my mom to keep her busy, satisfied, and I am not gonna lie, mom has her rough days, but every staff member makes her feel she is loved and needed. The Laurel has helped my family deal, accept, and participate in mom's care with the best guidance. As the disease is awful and accelerates, we sometimes are upset this happened to her, and question faith at times, but then I am reminded of the Laurel and its staff, and believe that was God intervening got her there. She was in an assisted living home in Florida in 2016 and I moved her back to the Chicago area in 2018 to another assisted living home. Two years in, Covid hit and she as well as all the others who were living in care homes were very isolated, so my husband and I moved her to our home. She was with us for a year when it became clear that we were in over our heads. I moved her to what I thought was a lovely assisted living with higher functioning dementia residents but after six months, when it was obvious that she required more care, and they were planning to raise her rates twenty percent, it was time to move again. I could not trust that they wouldn't do that again in another six months, and I had to be careful with her resources. I knew I had to get it right as I never planned to move her again. So I visited six communities before I was lucky enough to find The Laurel. I loved the first phone call with Carol. She was so efficient, caring, down to earth and accommodating, I felt comfortable. When I first met with her, my heart melted when she told me my mom would be loved there. So true. I loved my first visit there seeing the beautiful décor and thoughtful display cases. It was a pleasure seeing residents engaged in activities with plenty of staff there for assistance. I loved that when I arrived with my mom, there was the adorable Amy to greet her and just take over while my family and I moved her things to her room. I loved that Darresha, from housekeeping was in her room to label and hang up all her clothes. And that her pictures were hung were hung by Eric, all so helpful for families under the stress of moving day. I loved that she was busy with activities and was never left in her room to sit and do nothing. I loved that whenever I visited her, she would say how lucky she was to live there because everyone was so nice. And we have Julie Stoneburner, Executive Director, to thank for hiring only the best people. I loved the support groups that Carol organized, which is where I learned about Suncrest Hospice. I knew that when the time came, she would be in good hands. I am grateful for everything that the staff did for her up until her final moments. The only thing I didn't like were the curtains! That is the only thing I can think of to whine about. And I am laughing at myself while whining!

As for the billing staff, I am being charged for what they call an "incontent" package. As they explained diapers which I never used. Also, they bill you to rent the wheelchairs. Terrible management. After 2 weeks they wanted me to leave because I was non weight bearing. I did not even live in the state of IL and Michelle basically said sorry we are not a hotel. You can come back when you are able to walk. They billed me over 12,000 for 4 weeks stay and are still trying to bill me for things I never used. When were referred to Shepherd Premier Senior Living in Gurnee we looked at their website and met via video conference (due to Covid) with the owners and nurse we thought it was too good to be true. From the move in day on the staff has been incredible and kind, my mother is very happy there and the environment has helped her recover from her past bad experiences. I am thankful that Shepherd exists and had room for my mother at their facility. You can trust the people at Shepherd to take great care of a loved one.

I have toured many communities to familiarize myself with them so l can speak to families whose loved ones cannot remain in a private home. Normally it's easy to get a tour and staff are cordial. They grant me a professional courtesy. However, not Story point Libertyville. I showed up at my scheduled appointment for an afternoon tour, and the sales liaison canceled without notifying me first. She didn't give a reason. She claimed she'd sent me an email, but I didn't receive it. I tried rescheduling my appointment through their website. I received a prompt phone call from her saying she knows my role, she had worked in my industry before, and she didn't think I was worth her time. Then she said she did not have any models to show me because they were all full. On prior visits, I noticed the business cards they used to have at the front desk were no longer there. I noticed they had no staff at the front desk most times that I tried to visit to ask a question. Since they have no available rooms, any family seeking to place a loved one will likely be put on a waiting list. Based on this situation, I cannot recommend Story point to any family. Take your money elsewhere.
