Such an amazing crew at comedysportz! Thank you for the laughs!

10/10 would recommend grabbing friends, family, kids, your coworker, anyone to watch a ComedySportz show! It was the best experience! My 10year old and I had been looking forward to a night of comedy all week long. The comedy sports crew had age appropriate jokes and insanely creative ways to show off their improv skills! There is plenty of parking. Great working AC! A stocked powder room! (So thoughtful-hats off to the brains behind this one) A volunteer run concessions with incredibly affordable prices on drinks and snacks. Be prepared for tons of laughs! Such a wonderful option! I'm definitely going to be coming back here in the future!

Didn't know that they've been around since 1987! What a fun event to do at ComedySportz for a date, or for a group of friends hangout! They have 2 shows, one at 7:30pm for everyone, and a later show around 9:30 for adults only. Parking is easy as it's on a strip mall, right next to it is the big West San Jose mall where you can go shopping and eating before going to the show. All staff there are super friendly, the site is clean and even the restroom is well stocked (think of lady's room with pads and tempons!). There's a concession window selling non alcoholic drinks and snacks and popcorn. We even found a rare pineapple flavor Fanta! The show was run by a host that guided us through the rules and also motivated the audience participations, a score counting person David at the back, and 2 teams of 4 players each that play funny games or acted out funny skids to compete. Everything is hilarious and the audience's merciless suggestions fueled the comedy with fierce competitions and ruthless laughs. It was such a fun night! At the end of the show, all players lined up to shake hands and high five with the audience and you can even have a picture with them all at the very end. The price is very reasonable at $20 and if you join their loyalty club, you earn points for each ticket you buy. After buying 5 tickets you get to have a free one. They also offer stand up comedy classes and team building events. They will also travel to your site for the roadshow. Cannot recommend it enough!

It was such a blast! We couldn't get tickets a couple weeks ago since it was sold out so we lucked out this time! Not many people - maybe because it was a holiday? I suggest buying tickets in advance at least 1-2 weeks. Each player was so kind and friendly. I saw Jeff about 20 years ago. He's great! The key chain library in the lobby was so fun for the kids. I have to remember to bring one to leave next time. The kids 12 years old loved every minute. My daughter's friend said she's coming for her next birthday. Thanks for a fun and clean evening for everyone! My only suggestion- an early bird show- some kids can't stay up that late- and some adults too ha!

There is plenty of parking in the plaza. The check in process was easy and the staff was friendly. The show itself was very entertaining and the comedians on stage were really funny. They have a concession stand where they sell snacks and drinks. I saw the ComedySportz show and it reminded me of the show Wild n Out. I liked how they interact with the audience and make them feel like they are part of the show. It was a very enjoyable experience!

I went to a 7pm show on a Saturday and I have to acknowledge that this was too family friendly. For some reason there was an abundance of children in the audience. I also think the referee spent too much time explaining all the rules. As an audience I think it's easy to catch on and doesnt require so much explanation. I would describe the show as a family friendly version of "Whose Line Is It Anyway". I did still find the show humorous and entertaining. Better than I expected. They take a short intermission half way through the show for maybe 5-10 minutes. They have a small concession stand in the back with snacks, popcorn, and sodas. There is no alcohol served here. Plenty of parking. The staff is very friendly. Overall I would recommend for a date night, but maybe attend the 9pm (late night) show instead which is 18 plus.

We came on a Saturday evening for the ComedySportz 7:00 show and stayed for the "midnight" show (which is actually at 9pm). The actors/performers were extremely talented and hilarious, and you could tell they were having so much fun on stage. Though the sports theme is fine (performers dressed in sports gear, and split into teams with one referee, in which the winning team for each bit earns points), the 7:00 show was a bit disappointing. There were tons of kids in the audience (I believe a bday party), and the performers spent a little too much time explaining things, making it sound somewhat cheesy to make it fun for the kids, and weeding out unusable suggestions (ie. tweens not following instructions, or shouting out words that didn't fit what was being asked). My friend and I agreed that this somewhat spoiled the experience for the adults (first show only)... but then again, I'm not 100% sure if it's due to the kids in the audience, or that's just how they do things for the ComedySportz performance. I've never been to an improv show that spent so much time going over instructions, and other places provide enjoyable experiences for adults knowing that WE GET IT once actors start performing, we don't need to be taught how to clap or unnecessary commentary or slapstick comedy to grab our attention and keep us engaged. I don't mind kids being there (it's a great family activity), but I think the ComedySportz team/staff could find a better balance between making it feel like a kids show and just a regular show for adults. The later show was amazing and a big reason I'm giving 4 stars. The performers were in plain clothing (no longer the sports theme), and the Cluedunit murder mystery with audience suggestions and involvement was super entertaining, and they were able to use adult language and themes, and take adult suggestions from the audience. And it was three parts, the murder mystery, a series of plays on a suggested topic from the audience, and a game at the end. Had me laughing the entire time! I definitely liked the long form improv (midnight show) better, and it's a better deal, half the price! But I'd give the early show a chance again, to see maybe if this place is always full of kids for the ComedySportz and if it makes a difference. We had a wonderful time overall regardless. Other notes, they have a concessions stand serving snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, and there's a 20-25 minute break between the ComedySportz match and Midnight Show on Saturday night (early show was about 1 hour 30 minutes long). Also, there's plenty of parking outside in a shared lot for the plaza. By the way, if you check in on Yelp, you get free whapners. No, it's not a candy... but if you need a pair of fly swatters (one red and one blue), this is your chance to get a set for free!

The 'AIT players' group comprises of a mix of seasoned performers, instructors and folks who have just mastered the art at the workshops held at the theatre. The performances were spontaneous, quirky and innovative and while some of the joked didn't land as well, we felt that the performers were true to the original "improv" art form and did not try to fallback to a standard template or deviate from any suggestions provided by the audience. I had the chance to volunteer as a part of a quick skit and had a blast. It's worthy of a callout that the show comprised of close to 6 different short-skits/ games within a span of 75 minutes and that speaks volumes about the hard work put up by these folks. As a group, we had the chance to hangout with the crew after the show and talk more about their experiences which seemed to be a refreshing change from some of the other shows I've been to. Jeff Ringgold, one of the instructors of the workshop was also present at the show and an absolute delight to speak to. Other details and callouts - There's sufficient street parking along with reserved parking right behind the theatre. - While there isn't a full bar inside the theatre, they do serve beer, wine, water and non-alcoholic drinks. - The theatre is a fairly small and private space but big enough to host large groups of people. - Each show is close to 75 minutes inclusive of a 5-10 minute break.

For movies that might sold out, it's still worth it. Otherwise, we could have bought tickets at the theatre to avoid the extra fees. I like that they have senior day all day every Monday and Wednesday for 55+, in addition to the usual Tuesday specials. Such good deals! On the other hand, concession items are as expensive as other cinemas. My daughter got an Icee for $7.5. The concession line moved slowly, too. Finding street parking at night was easy. I liked their vintage vibe. It was quite unique compared to the movie theaters at the mall. Even though the seats didn't have recline buttons nor footrest, they still reclined a bit when you leaned back. The theatre was even nicer right after they renovated 10+ years ago. Certain things had started to age over the years, e.g. the leather on both my armrests was cracked. Overall, the place was still well maintained and clean. Staff was friendly and helpful at the concessions stand which doubled as the movie ticket counter. Got a small bag of buttered popcorn, and it was delish. The inside of the auditorium was inviting and quite unique. Large black and white portraits of iconic actors and celebrities across time lining the walls, ie. Marilyn Monroe. High top tables and chairs inside the auditorium, in a section toward the side, in addition to the reserved lounger seats (this is the first movie theatre I've been to that had this, and I liked it). Not your typical luxury loungers, they do recline a bit if you lean back (no button to push), but there are no footrests that come out, and the aisle seats (at least toward the back of the room) were like loveseats with no armrests in between the first two seats in each row. Also no cupholders at any of the seats, just small detachable armrest tray tables. These are just a few features of this theatre worth noting. The atmosphere overall was wonderful, a classic theater with modern touches.

Sure, it was nice that the opera was NOT nine hours long, but that's me. Your mileage may vary. The outside of the building blends in so well to its surroundings, you may not notice it at first. But, the California Theatre is easy to find, and perfect to walk to from parking or a restaurant. Even in the entrance way before you walk in (where there's the Box Office for will-call or day-of tickets), you see the elegance and grandeur that awaits. Still, there's nothing stuff about it at all. Every staff member or volunteer I encountered was helpful, friendly, and welcoming. There happened to be live music in the Lobby before and after the performance. Refreshments are found on each floor. We had Orchestra Seats. The opera looked and sounded crisp. The singing, the set, the orchestra, the costumes all radiated excitement and serious fun. This particular opera, by Bela Bartok, is rarely done and having some familiarity with the composer, I was excited to check it out. Very much enjoyed the opera, and the venue. City Lights is smaller than I'm used to but I loved its compact, intimate space. Every seat seems to be a good one and comfortable as well! Anyway, if you're on the fence about coming to see one, then you should definitely do it once. And if you really dig it, do it twice. :) OK, onto the review... The City Lights Theater Company has been supporting local actors and theater makers for forty-five years (ca. 1982) now, and have been in this space since 1991--despite a looming threat from developers... The Good: *Very small intimate venue of ±100 seat theater. There is no bad seat in the house, as even in the back row you still feel like you're practically front row. *Tickets are fairly inexpensive at ±$50-80/ea with season passes available. There's also afternoon matinee shows available for us old farts. *Staff was very friendly *They have a small snack bar and even serve wine *A chance to interact with the performers at the end of the show. *We watched "Running After Shadows" by Vincent Terrell Durham and it was excellent. Great story telling, fantastic acting, and it takes the crowd on a wild range of emotions. The Meh: *Street Parking only but it's free on the weekends. The Ugly: *They must start cutting onions in there at some point, cuz I swear my eyes started watering for no reason. That's right. No reason whatsoever.
