I came to see the dashingly hunky Matteo Lane during his recent tour here at SJ Improv: a legendary…read moretheater here in the South Bay that's bore witness to many famous comedians throughout the decades. His show was about $40 which isn't bad given how expensive things are nowadays. Like most improv houses, there is a 2-item minimum and that can be either in the form of food or drink. I ordered a draft stella and their chips and guac. The drink was fine as expected but the food was pretty mediocre at best. I definitely do not recommend having dinner here unless you're really short on time. The show itself was fantastic. We were sitting in the upper balcony and seating is first-come, first-serve, and ended up right in the first row from above. No complaints here as we drank our drink and enjoyed the show. Parking can be tough but there are plenty of lots nearby that offer free parking for the first 90 minutes, so it doesn't add up to be too much.

The show started about 10 mins late. I got a seat on the top balcony and didn't have any issues viewing the speakers on stage or hearing them. What didn't work for me was the food. There was a two item minimum requirement. Though I didn't have an issue with the requirement in theory, what disappointed me was the quality of the food. The fried pickles were salt bombs, French fries were over salted as well, guac was missing salt completely while the tortilla chips were not full fried. The food distracted me from the going ons of the performance unfortunately. They need to take steps to improve.

We arrived for the 7:00pm Saturday showing at Comedy Sportz. The comedy theater is located in a nice plaza across from Oakridge Mall in San Jose. Parking is accessible in the large parking lot. The staff was friendly and accommodating. With it being mostly a packed house, there was a nice Saturday night vibe going on. I appreciated that the show was suitable for all ages. The show itself was a different unique brand of comedy I'm not used to usually watching live. The talent these performers displayed with their improvisation and wittiness was outstanding. We enjoyed the crowd participation and high energy from the referee host. One hilarious highlight we enjoyed a lot was when the referee host asked for the performers to act out the skit in forward and backward. The format did remind me of the tv show, Whose line is it anyway?, of course. There was 10 minute intermission towards the last part of the show. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Comedy Sportz. I found most of the skits to be funny at times. My 10 year old son really enjoyed the show, which I appreciated it since I was not sure what his reaction was gonna be. I would definitely like to come back and also watch the 9:00 improv after dark show as well.

Brick House was AMAZING, each actress had so much wit and fire in her that both our stomachs ached from laughter. We spoke with some audience members before the doors opened and they were equally as anxious as us. In the middle of the show, I looked around to spot them in the audience and found them cackling in a crowd of grins and hoots. I have to credit not just the cast, but also our ENTHUSIASTIC and hilarious host as well as the energetic crowd. I'll definitely drag more people with me next time, bring out those extra chairs!!! Come early and mingle with the crowd a bit. And if you have some time to spare, check out the thrift store right next to the theatre!

The 'AIT players' group comprises of a mix of seasoned performers, instructors and folks who have just mastered the art at the workshops held at the theatre. The performances were spontaneous, quirky and innovative and while some of the joked didn't land as well, we felt that the performers were true to the original "improv" art form and did not try to fallback to a standard template or deviate from any suggestions provided by the audience. I had the chance to volunteer as a part of a quick skit and had a blast. It's worthy of a callout that the show comprised of close to 6 different short-skits/ games within a span of 75 minutes and that speaks volumes about the hard work put up by these folks. As a group, we had the chance to hangout with the crew after the show and talk more about their experiences which seemed to be a refreshing change from some of the other shows I've been to. Jeff Ringgold, one of the instructors of the workshop was also present at the show and an absolute delight to speak to. Other details and callouts - There's sufficient street parking along with reserved parking right behind the theatre. - While there isn't a full bar inside the theatre, they do serve beer, wine, water and non-alcoholic drinks. - The theatre is a fairly small and private space but big enough to host large groups of people. - Each show is close to 75 minutes inclusive of a 5-10 minute break.
