Comedy in Harlem is hands down one of the best-kept secrets in the city. A friend put us on to it,…read moreand once we found out tickets were next to nothing, we jumped on it. Boy, did we have an amazing time! The comedians were hilarious both times we went (yes, twice in one month--that should tell you something). The vibe is intimate, the energy is warm, and the laughs are nonstop. The food is another reason to go. Everything we tried was A1--fried catfish, salmon, mac and cheese, yams, cabbage, potato salad. The drinks are strong and tasty, and prices are more than fair. They do have a per-person minimum, but it's easy to hit because the food and drinks are that good. Service is wonderful, and the owners are such beautiful, welcoming people. They even went out of their way to meet a need we had, which made us feel extra comfortable. The club is set up with a DJ, gender-neutral bathrooms, and a full open bar on display. It's Black-owned--the only Black-owned comedy club in New York--which makes supporting it even sweeter. This spot works for everything: girl's night, date night, or even solo if you just want to vibe out. It's right in the heart of Harlem with plenty of street parking, and if you're taking the train, the subway lets you out practically at the door. Tickets are usually under $25, which is a steal for the experience. Sometimes they even run specials--our second visit had no cover at all. Definitely sign up for their emails so you don't miss out. Kudos to the owners for creating such a gem. Comedy in Harlem has become a go-to for me, and I'll be back again and again.

We were a group of 10 and joined another large group. The tour/presentation was led by the legendary Billy aka Mr Apollo. There are no words to put into how transformative this experience was! High spirits And they truly care about not only The theater but the neighborhood as well. Great for all ages and super interactive!

Honestly, there's not a bad seat in the house, but I always go for the center mezzanine. Great view every time. Tonight was the grand finale: the Stars of Tomorrow (kids) winner took home $5K, and the adult winner--a saxophone player--won $20K! The show is hilarious because no one is safe from the crowd. If you don't bring your A-game, you're getting booed off stage. Only downside: the venue is currently under renovation, and the air conditioning was barely on--borderline uncomfortable. But even that couldn't ruin the experience.

I came to the Shrine World Music Venue with a few friends after a Friday evening at a cigar lounge…read more I had no expectations and had walked by the Shrine several times not knowing what was there along Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard. Unless you know about it, you can easily walk by, given it blends into the general Harlem cityscape, especially during the day. Then at night, especially during the afterhours when I was there, the scene flips and this place becomes turnt up! People were lined up trying to get inside at 0130. The bouncers were searching and patting people down, nothing absurd or overly intrusive. There is a cover charge and they take credit cards for the cover. As you walk inside, the bar in on your right. Keep going and the dancefloor awaits you. It's not that large, but people are generally very courteous. There are a few places to sit, especially in the back in the left corner. That is also where the steps lead you downstairs, presumably to the restroom, which I did not have to use. The vibe is poppin' inside and it is fed by the DJ on a stage in the back, playing Worldbeats, Afropop, Afrobeats, Reggae, Dance Hall, and Soca. They are setup for live bands here. The volume is high, but not uncomfortably or earsplittingly high. The people here are drawn to this vibe and energy. You can dance here all night and the air conditioning and ventilation are of the capacity to keep you and everyone else comfortable. Stick around until closing time at 0400 when everyone starts walking out and the AC nearly turns the Shrine into a refrigerator. For an unassuming place on the outside, it is clear this is a place you can come to with friends or a date if this is your vibe and it's hard to imagine anyone not enjoying this. Prices are reasonable too at the bar. They have a good selection of draught and bottled beer. Guinness on tap was $9 for a pint. They serve up the cocktails too. Four fun and returnworthy stars!

I didn't see any food, and I didn't see any service because I never even made it to the bar. I only saw the DJ and the packed dance floor and that's all I needed to see. However, besides those 2 things- I would STILL make the trip from anywhere else in the city to come here, especially because of the caliber of comics they have here! I have always gotten free tickets here, or my comic friends have put me on the guest list, so I have no idea of a cover charge or ticket prices. I have also used free ticket ads to gain entry. Either way, there is a "2-item" minimum, essentially 2 drinks or food items, and that even includes water. I stick with beer. I had a martini once, and it was expensive and tasted terrible. Popcorn is good, and pretzels, while microwaved, are also good. There is a bar with a couple of booths up front while you wait, and then once you come in, it is a small room with a stage and a bunch of tables. You are seated in the order that you come in; if you want to be up front, get in early. After you are seated, the servers start taking your food and drink orders. Every time I have gone, there were several comics, it has always been a fun night, and if you want, you can fraternize with the comedians before you go in! This is always a fun night out, there are so many restaurants around that you can either eat first and see the second show, or see the first show and then eat.
