Comal next door is a must. Honestly we order twice a week. The chicken tacos are fabulous !! We also order the beans and rice combos and the quesadillas with lots of tortillas !! (Bargain at a $1 a side). Note of caution though- do not select avocado - 4/5 times they come just brown, I thinks it's a default of ordering online - so shame on you Comal ! Great Yelp and East Bay Express reviews led us to this place for dinner, and it exceeded expectations. Our burrito, torta, salad, and a few smaller dishes were among the best we had ever tasted anywhere. Juicy, well-seasoned chicken was the centerpiece of the main dishes we ordered. Also a standout was the incredible cole slaw inside the torta. The menu is not huge but had quite a few non-meat options. Came here post yoga at Yoga to The People, pretty hangry needing food ASAP. tIf you don't want to do an actual sit down meal at their big sister restaurant next door, Comal Next Door is a great option to satisfy casual and convenient! It's higher priced than your average taqueria obviously but again that means the quality of ingredients is also a little higher, in my opinion. I got a chicken bowl which came with rice, beans, lettuce and crema for about $11. It was quite filling and tasty though I did think it was a little overly salty. Best quick lunch on Shattuck Avenue. Call in, order online or just show up and they'll serve up a delicious lunch in no time. My favorite item on the menu hands down is the chicken achiote burrito. The flavor is off the charts you don't even need extra Chile or salsa. The bowls are delicious too if you want healthier fare. Highly recommend this place it's always packed and don't forget to try the aguas frescas - very refreshing! read more

Actually, my rating is 0/5 stars. Pretty awful chicken burrito. The meat was dry, the beans were dry, very little flavor and the food was cold. There was absolutely no love in the preparation and serving of this food. I'm Latina/Chicana and an experienced cook. I know of which I speak. I won't be eating here again and I'm recommending that people interested in having good mexican food don't waste their money on the overpriced food served here. read more

Ordered two burritos today from here and I can't begin to describe how disappointing it was. The flavor was way off, there were pineapples in there?? That was hella random. It was dry, no sour cream -- even though it says there was. Guacamole tasted weird... Seriously, I don't understand the reviews that said this was the best place. We are such big fans of Comal to Go. Everything they prepare tastes fresh, is beautifully presented and the portions easily last us beyond one meal. The menu is a bit pricier than typical mexican fare but in our opinion it is well worth it and we always order extra salsa because it's AWESOME. On a recent visit to Berkeley, we stopped in at Comal Next Door for a quick lunch: burrito, salad and a beer. The burrito, a carnitas, was excellent - rich, substantial and delicious. This is a somewhat up-market "fast casual" "taqueria" type place next to eponymous bobo sit down restaurant Comal. If I were in business of trashing local businesses I'd be writing a one star for the parent place, which has little to recommend it beyond convenience. But that's not my Schtick. My schtick is 5 stars for places I dig. And I DIG this place. Burritos are delish, the ingredients are quality, and the prices don't require a re-fi before you swipe. Burritos are small, rich without being filling, and bursting with flavor. I am guessing this is because of the ingredients, but tbqh idk. I'm have not reached the state of self hatred required to intentionally avoid meat, but my vegetarian friend (may god have mercy on his soul) affirms their veggie options are good. Counter service by a friendly staff of college-age hipsters. Plenty of seats. Don't have to bus your own tables like a soup kitchen. They do it for you, so TIP WHEN YOU PAY. read more

Flew in from New York to surprise my sister for her graduation and the restaurant won't add an additional seat for me to see my family at dinner because they don't want to "overwhelm" staff with one additional person. This is probably my favorite burrito spot in the Downtown Berkeley area. I usually either get the Chorizo burrito or the Berkshire Pork Carnitas burrito, and both have always tasted really delicious, fresh and filling. The cashier is always friendly. There is also self-serve water in the corner. The only downside to the place is that it's fairly small (but a lot of places in Downtown Berkeley are small). So if it's really busy and you want to eat inside, it may take awhile to get a seat. But I will keep coming back for their delicious and fresh food. read more

Outstanding Al-Pastor pork burrito. Ordered as is and was not disappointed. Everything was fused perfectly together, cheese was melted, and the pork was tender and sweet. Every bite felt like a journey into Mexican heaven. I swear if only I had a Corona this would have been god-sent. Topped with some Crystal hot sauce or Comal's hot sauce makes it even better. Well first of all... incredible tortillas. I try not to order a burrito, but jeez the tortillas are amazing. I indulge in CND burritos. First it was the chile relleno, I love a good chile relleno burrito. Now it's the chile verde tofu. I didn't know how much I loved chile verde until now, and it's tofu! Crazy. This reads as a vegetarian review, but IT IS NOT. I'm a fan of the meat. I haven't even mentioned the chips. Indulgent. So fried. So delicious. I try not to order them. I succeed... most of the time. All this, AND amazing service. We typically order CND through Caviar. We order a lot, and they've always been amazing. Just recently, Caviar decided to suck real hard (like they, and other delivery services do periodically), and our order was so many minutes late. I think it took an hour 40 minutes for it to be delivered. Anyhow, it came with a cookie, piping hot, and a note that they had remade it 4 times to ensure it was hot & delicious. This is for the Berkeley Next Door. I'll definitely try the Lake Merrit location some time. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the inside decor is nice. As with everywhere, very much lacking in staff. One server trying to take orders and deliver the food so no cleanup was happening on the outdoor tables. Food was good. The Barbacoa taco was great but the al pastor was just so-so. My friend ordered a side of refried beans and rice and it came as black beans. A switch was made and the refried beans were very good. We had high hopes for this place. It boasted an expensive menu but a more down-to-earth vibe than Comal, next door. Weirdly, they did not have carne asada, so my girlfriend ordered 3 tacos al pastor. I ordered al pastor, barbacoa, and carnitas tacos. The tortillas were dry and tasteless. Perhaps they were slightly warmed up from the cold ones they got at the store? The barbacoa was the winner - complex and full of spices - but the others were a disappointment. The "al pastor" was vaguely al pastor-spiced chopped up pork. No char, no texture, no flavor, and with some weird chipotle paste squirted on top of it. The only flavor that came through was the pineapples - the obscene amount of overly sweet pineapples. They came in little cubes that had seemingly been fried - canned? This authentic experience was enhanced by the cashier pronouncing the key ingredient in their salsa "habañero". read more

For $46 we got a tiny lackluster burrito bowl (grilled chicken, bland pinto beans, rice, 5 shreds of lettuce and a quarter tsp of sour cream), a decent but not special Barbacoa burrito, a tiny frozen margarita and a Lagunitas Ale (can) and an order of chips and guac (1/8 cup). This is before tip. People who have likened Comal Next Door to Chipotle are totally right, the only difference is that Comal serves smaller portions for waaaaay more money than Chipotle, but it's the same bland, Americanized food. This food NEEDS sauces or something to perk them up - my chicken bowl was sadder than sad. The margarita was GOOD, it was nice and lime-y with a good tequila presence and they obviously use a slushy machine for them because they pour them immediately upon order, no blending or mixing. I really enjoyed the consistency - it stayed emulsified and frozen through our entire meal (albeit a short meal, but still). But it's $10 and really small. I'd be tempted to return to CND just to sit outside and drink margaritas because I liked the outdoor seating and the margs were good, but I wouldn't pay $10 per (very small - I'd guess it's about 5 ounces and remember that at least half of that is blended ice) drink at a Chipotle-esque eatery...if they reduced the price of these to $8 I'd still feel like it was too high, but I'd return for them. The service missed the mark. I asked a question of the guy at the register about what came in a particular dish and he acted like he was either confused by the question or he thought it was a stupid one. Next, the female staff member brought us our food to our outdoor table. I asked for silverware and napkins and she looked at me like I had 3 heads and a middle finger pointed at her face. I assume in hindsight that there is probably a bin where you're meant to collect your own utensils, but even if that is the case, God forbid I ask for a small gesture from an employee of a restaurant where business is utterly dead. When she returned, she bore one set of silverware for our table of two. Both dishes we ordered were laden in pinto beans. To make matters worse, the beans were very bland and tasted no different than canned. It felt really silly to pay over $10 for a small portion of food that was 95% pinto beans. Mamacita didn't raise no fool! Nothing at Comal Next Door was terrible, but nothing was very good, except the margarita but that was too pricey. read more

I ordered one, was an hour late due to a meeting, and they decided to make me another fresh one instead. I would have totally eaten the original one, but they wouldn't have it. That is good service. Was hoping I'd have a better experience here than at Comal itself, but not so much. The tacos were good but small and over priced. The menu lists mezcal or tequila as costing $6 and says "on the rocks or with an agua fresca" but doesn't list any extra cost for agua fresca. Come to find out it's an extra $4 for it (very steep for watery agua fresca), which is never listed or stated when you order, making it a $10 drink which it is not worth AT ALL. I got my drink and didn't even taste or smell any tequila, both the people I was with agreed (and compared to my friend's drink where you could taste it). I went and talked to the server and he takes it, smells it, and goes "oh there is DEFINITELY mezcal in there" acting like "how could you NOT smell that," then just hands it back to me. Not to mention the fact mezcal wasn't even what I ordered. Over-priced for the location and the food , deceptive, and really rude service. Do yourself a favor and go to an actual taqueria. read more

If you are a student, do not come here. I noticed that this opened recently and saw that they had tortas so I decided to go try it. Big mistake. The torta was over $12 with tax, and what I ended up getting was this small box. Every torta I have had from real Mexican places has been MUCH bigger for the same price or less. I kept an open mind though, but when I ate it, the meat was bland and the rest of the torta was dry. This place is not worth your time or money, go to Fresco or La Burrita. read more
