Terrible experience!! I recently moved from NYC to Virginia and was trying to find a good hair salon. I found this one and made an appointment even though it was overpriced. I thought that it would be worth it but it wasn't. The color was wrong and done unprofessionally, I have dye all over my face. The blow out was also done very poorly that I had to go over it myself when I got home after 30 mins. I wouldn't recommend going there even as a last resort. read more

After constantly highlighting my hair and using too much heat on it, the texture was driving me crazy! It took forever to style, felt dry and coarse and generally looked unhealthy. When I couldn't stand it anymore, I went to Colour Bar Studio to consult with the experts! Mirian and Tania had highlighted my hair in the past and it always felt soft and silky afterward. Mirian recommended an Olaplex treatment followed by a Brazilian Blowout two weeks later. I was nervous about the Brazilian Blowout after a bad keratin experience maybe 7 years ago, but completely trust Mirian with the health of my hair. I followed her instructions to a tee and am shocked and ecstatic with my results. It is smooth, shiny, took 5 minutes max to blow dry and instantly looked styled. I came in here crying-- another local salon had absolutely butchered my hair color. Tania sat with me, comforted me, helped me formulate a plan that would fix my hair to the best of its ability. She clearly laid out prices. She had to do two coats of color and toner and then did Olaplex to help strengthen my poor hair that had been through a lot. I absolutely walked out of the salon MUCH happier than when I had come in. Gone was my horrible brassy orange head. I now had a hair color that at least looked like it was presentable even though it was darker than my natural color-- Tania had explained that this was the only way to neutralize the horrible brassy orange. I was so happy with her help, I hugged her when I left. The salon is clean, the staff is exceptional. I got a biscotti and tea while at the Colour bar-- a nice perk. I also like that they use Oribe products... they are amazing. Tania was an extremely knowledgeable hair color expert and stylist. The lady who blew dried and washed my hair, TJ, also did a fantastic job and gave me an amazing hair massage. I will be going back to help my hair get back to the color it was-- I definitely trust Tania to do it. You get what you pay for with hair (and with a lot of other things); don't go someplace cheap, you will have cheap hair. CBS is exceptional. read more

I strongly recommend avoiding this place. They only apply color away from any mirrors so you cannot see where they are applying it - and cannot correct major communication mistakes until it's finished and it's too late. My stylist has been Tanyia. This is the second time that I have spent over 8 months growing in my natural hair down to my eyebrows - the exact point where I want any artificial color to begin. I take daily hair vitamins, use a shower filter to limit chlorine exposure, massage expensive oils in to my scalp to sleep in every few days, only use high end shampoo every 10 (using quality dry shampoo / cleansing conditioner in between) so that my hair grows in healthy, shiny, and youthful looking (not an obvious visible gray hair in spite of being 48). It's not a beautiful color - I would never want my whole head that shade - but I love it at the crown and on the underside of the back of my hair and bangs in order to create a more natural, youthful look. Both times I begin my consult by clearly stating that we're doing virtually nothing to the regrowth - that I like to see as much of my natural hair as possible. I discuss my short and longer term goals - how I want to grow part of my natural hair even longer in places so that I transition to a more subtle, lower natural ombre where a few start at my eyes and heavy highlighting starts more at my cheekbones. I do ask for a few tiny pieces (baby lights) for face framing to tie in with a few on the top of my bangs. The second time I also told her I was trying to transition from blonde on my colored hair to a look where my natural dark roots transition to a lighter (no more than 2 shades), warmer red brown instead. And I show her numerous pictures of natural dark shiny hair at the top with warmer reddish brown color placed on the bottom mid shaft / in a few strategic places higher. Both times I left the salon with every millimeter of every strand of my hair with artificial color. The first time she took me all light blonde to the roots. When I told her that I wanted her to put some of my natural color back she said "there's no natural color in your hair for me to match" (after being told that I wanted to see as much of my natural hair as possible??) The second time she painted a bunch of artificial low lights with a few highlights over my natural, shiny, healthy hair (some artificial lowlights just to where my natural hair ended!) and left all of the lower part blonde instead of just continuing the natural darkness down (and changing the shade) in the previously colored hair in places. After I said it wasn't what I wanted she then applied a red brown toner over all of it. I cried for days both times. No stylist can fix it. No one can give you back natural, shiny, never been processed hair and all the time you spent nurturing it growing in. Everyone can tell the difference between dyed hair and natural. I look like I have to dye it to fake an ombre (cover gray) - instead of the healthy, youthful high ombre I walked in with. All you can do is start over and try to grow it out yet again (and really wish you had your money back!). If you like a modern, youthful, natural look where several inches or more is your natural hair, where artificial color doesn't go to the root everywhere - if you like it when part of your hair actually matches your eyebrows, and your hair can grow in more subtly without a constant obvious regrowth line, with less breakage at the root from processing AVOID HER. NEVER sit in her chair. She does NOT know how to incorporate any of your natural hair in to what she does. Why did I go back after the first fiasco? I ask myself that constantly. If you do want artificial color to the root - shade varying but artificial (and I know many women do want to completely hide their roots) she's very good at it. I suspect those women don't let their roots grow to their eyebrows first, but that's just me. If you're going to pay nearly $450 (with tips) for color and a cut, why not find a colorist who understands what the term"natural hair" actually means - that it looks completely different than colored / processed hair and that it looks completely different as your hair grows in. I did go back to talk to try to understand how "nothing on my regrowth" keeps becoming "color all my regrowth". She said I had conflicting goals that couldn't be done / it wouldn't look right and implied that I just can't be pleased. I suggest you find a colorist who resolves any conflicting goals that she hears while you're still in the consult chair - not when it's too late and you're set back 8 months (times 2 in my case) toward your goal. read more

I just got home from seeing Tanya for ombre coloring and to fix my botched bangs recently done at another salon. Let me first say a few things before I get into my personal review. Yes, they are expensive, but in my opinion you have to pay for good service and you WILL get it here. It's not about offering you a cup of coffee or tea. It's far more than that. Tanya spent time with me during my consultation and told me what my realistic result would be. I can't even tell you how many times I have sat down with a stylist who says, "sure! we can do that!" leaving the salon feeling disappointed with the results. I walked in with multiple layers of semi-permanent dye and existing highlights. I saw pictures on Pinterest of ombre highlights and really wasn't sure if it was feasible. Honestly,Tanya produced results which were even better than the photos I saw on Pinterest. She took time to show me product that would work on my hair, and how to use it without being pushy about selling them. I'm happy to say I finally found a stylist in the area who takes her time with her clients. You won't just be a customer they are trying to get in and out. Tania fixed my hair! I have long straight hair. A few months ago I went to PR partners and got a horrible haircut that resulted in short chunky layers. I wasn't paying attention during the cut bc I don't worry too much about my hair and didn't think a simple cut could go that wrong. My mistake. Tania smoothed out the layers as much as possible and then consulted me about extensions. I went with the extensions and think it was worth the investment. Colour Bar Studio is amazing. I absolutely love it! Lets just start with the owner, Tania! She is outstanding. I am always skeptical when a stylist refers to themselves as a colorist, but Tania is definitely a colorist and knows her stuff. I met Tania a couple years ago after a terrible experience at another salon. I was basically a train wreck. I have dark brown hair and when I came to Tania it was organish, dry and needed help. Tania took the time to explain to WHY my hair color is hard to dye, and then fixed me right up. She knew I wanted something natural and I walked out a couple hours later feeling and looking like a million bucks. Ever since that day, my loyalty has been to Tania. Her knowledge of hair, texture and color is very impressive. I have been growing my hair out,and at my last appointment she took the time to show me different ways I could style my hair and even taught me how to braid my own hair. Yes, I am an adult that has never braided hair before. The salon itself is immaculate. It is at the bottom of an office building and parking has never been an issue. Every staff member has been professional, polite and very welcoming. The Colour Bar Studio was even willing to participate in a fundraiser for my son's school. This shows me that they believe in community and support their clients. If you are male (my husband now goes here) or female looking for a fabulous hair salon, look no further. This was my first visit to Colour Bar Studio. I've known about this place for quite some time but never thought of going there. I had an ombre that I was ready to get rid of, my hair would keep breaking and I knew I needed a good chop. I was refereed to Tiffany by my friend and as soon as I started talking to her I knew I was in great hands. I loved how they take a little survey about your hair and what accomplishments you want for your hair. I explained to her that I wanted to go all natural back to my roots and if able to I wanted subtle highlights, she went on showing me pictures of what kind of highlights I liked and asked what I didn't like. Tiffany let me know that right now it would be better for me to do the all over roots color and hold off on the highlights seeing how I was looking to get healthy hair and get my length back. She did the Olapex treatment on my hair which did wonders! People at work are asking me if I did the Brazilian because my hair is so shinny and smooth. Like I previously stated I got a pretty big haircut, for me at least. I never thought I would love my hair medium/short length like I do and I think the reason is because of how she cut it. I don't know what kind of powers she has but Tiffany worked magic on my hair. I absolutely love my hair! I kept passing the advertising signs on Route 7 for the Colour Bar's Drybar and decided to give it a shot. I am a huge fan of blowouts and get them 2 times a month. The stylist, Lizzie, was very nice but her skills on blowouts were not up to par. My hair was frizzy and way too much hairspray was used. The worst part was the price. The blowout cost $65, which is way too expensive for a blowout. The others users are correct in the fact the Colour Bar upcharges when they can. It cost $10 extra dollars for long hair. Even $55 without the upcharge is too much for that quality of a blowout. The upscale salon, Immortal Beloved, in DC that I go to for color only charges $50. If you are looking for a great blowout, I suggest Salon Citi in Fairfax, only $35 and it lasts for 2-3 days. Another suggestion would be PR Partners in Tysons, only $35 there as well. read more

I have been coming to Colour Bar Studio since I move to NoVA after reading great Yelp reviews. It is always nerve-wracking finding a new salon and hairstylist, but Colour Bar Studio eased my fears and made the process amazing. I started seeing Tiffany for haircuts and finally bit the bullet and let her balayage my "virgin" hair last year. It came out AMAZING and I have been doing it ever since. She always explains everything that she is doing and if I describe a cut or a color that I want to achieve she will pull up a picture to confirm that she knows exactly what I want! The whole staff is friendly and talkative and will always offer you a beverage when you walk in. The salon itself is in a convenient location in Tysons Corner with lots of parking and is bright, airy and clean. They even have massaging chairs while you get your hair washed!
