Can I give six stars? I absolutely love Colour Bar Studio! I had gone to immortal beloved in DC and then a one chair salon when IB closed - but still was looking for an elevated salon that uses Oribe in Nova. I searched and searched - but it's really hard to tell quality and service from reviews (don't ppl only write hair salon reviews when they want to gripe?). Enter Colour Bar Studio! I absolutely love Sylvia - she matched my natural dark brown hair color perfectly! My cut is excellent and she's truly an expert at her craft. On my last visit, she even showed me how to curl my hair w an flatiron to match a look I mentioned I'd like to wear for an event. And the entire team is so well coordinated in customer service - esp Claudia who supports the stylists and happens to share my birthday (she always is so cheerful saying hi to her "bday buddy" in person and on the phone!). Beauty in the times of COVID July 2020 My young son and I recently visited the fabulous new Colour Bar location at The Boro for our long-awaited haircuts. I have been a client of Sherry's for 20+ years and I have been a customer at Colour Bar since the day they opened more than eight years ago. My son has been a client since he was two - I do not trust his curls to anyone but Sherry! I was eager to see how they would be handling their guests with all the new COVID-19 restrictions in place. First, getting to the new location was super easy. Parking was a breeze and the new location is right off the elevator. Staff greeted my mask wearing fabulousness (gray hairs and all) and took my temperature quickly. She did the same for my mask wearing little man and we were ushered inside. The new location is gorgeous and spacious, and the team is so happy to see their guests. Chairs are covered in custom plastic, and staff are cleaning thoroughly after each guest. We were asked to wash our hands immediately before sitting down for our service. It is clear the Colour Bar team are working hard to take care of their guests' health and well-being, as well as their hair! Like any five-star establishment, the extra effort and cleaning go almost unnoticed to the guests. It is just done -- and done well. The extra safety measures are carried out effortlessly by the Colour Bar team. The quality of their services remains top-notch. The new salon space is bright, technologically advanced, and welcoming. But the Colour Bar team is what truly makes this salon shine. They love what they do, and they bring a level of expertise that is unsurpassed in their field. This place is not worth the time or money. You'll end up with the worst color and damaged hair. My stylist forgot about me under the dryer. When she unwrapped the foil, my hair was literally breaking. I told her to stay away from my roots and she basically brushed the color straight onto my scalp. Around the time I got my hair done, my stylist had some personal issues which was ssnt out in a mass email. She took out her emotions on my hair THAT I PAID OVER $800 for. Giving me a completely effed up color that I never asked for. Then when I tried to schedule to get back in so she can fix her mistake, they were not as accommodating as they were when trying to take my money. First and foremost, the inside of this salon looks absolutely beautiful and it is well-maintained; however, there are some red flags that stood out to me when I toured the salon. To begin with, why is the salon inside of a hotel that is not easily assessable to street walkers? I am very sure that this high-end salon only caters to snooty, wealthy white women with a certain price point. Next, where are all of the Black people at? When I interviewed with two polished white women, the vibe that I got is that they only cater to white women's hair and there is no diversity outside of that. Plus, the staff is majority white and it would be awkward for this salon to hire a black person given their track record of not doing so in the past. Based on my experience in this salon, It looks like a salon where no Black people or any type of man would ever feel comfortable in an establishment such as this. My advice would be to steer clear of this salon if you do more than brunettes, blondes or redheads with long, flowing hair on white people. read more

I had been looking for a new salon and stylist since my stylist of 10+ decided to pursue a new career. My husband has worked many years with the Colour Bar Studio and suggested that I go see them and give them a try. He said I would not be disappointed and I would love my hair and that Colour Bar provides a exceptional customer service and level of professionalism that I would be happy with. I made an appointment with Tania and I will say that I was not disappointed! The Colour Bar has taken all the precautions to ensure that their customers are safe and feel comfortable in their salon. I have never had worse experiance in a hair salon than in this one! This was my first time at this salon. I was looking forward to getting my hair framed by a senior stylist who charges 20 % more than other salons for a cut. When I talked to the receptionist I asked for their latest in the day availability and she offered me time on Friday evening time slot before they close.  Most other solons are also usually open at that time. I also showed up on time for my appointment, however, for some reason, the hair stylist Sherry look like she was annoyed and barely looked at the pictures I showed her..I asked her if this hair style would be good for my face shape and she said yes without putting much thought into it. She also didnt examine my hair before getting started, although based on my conversation with the receptionist, I came in there with an expectation that there would be a consultation on what would look best for my face shape. The hair cut turned out to be very bad. The front of my hair is just chopped almost  in a straight line all the way to my ears and the back of my hair looks razor-sharp, as if someone wrapped my hair in a ponytail and cut everything. She also suggested me to leave with my hair wet even though blowdrying is included in the service fee. Overall, this woman's attitude was unpleasant.. I felt like she was mad when I first got in a chair. I tried to carry a small conversation to get her to mellow down. She also asked me weird questions about my hair, even though she was just giving me a cut and should have examined it herself before getting started. The receptionist, and the young lady who washed my hair were very sweet, but the quality of my cut, the hair dresser's attitude, and the fact that I had to pay more than other solons charge is shocking! read more

I recently came into CBS after not coming into a salon for quite some time and asked to do something different with my hair. After trusting the stylist with her recommendations, I went to check out and was quite shocked that the total was almost $700 not including tip, which was another $150. To confirm, my hair service was very standard. I have short hair and asked for color, cut, highlight. For example, I didn't do anything special that would explain the extremely high cost. The cost for the service compared to other salons should be half the price. If you want to have your hair done here, I would recommend asking the prices prior to having any services rendered. read more

I love coming here. The staff are friendly and know me by name. We always have a fun time catching up. I'm always offered a beverage - which can be anything from water to an espresso drink to wine. It's very clean and bright. It smells good and the music is great - very relaxing. My husband and I both see Tiffany and love her. She's not afraid to get wild and crazy (like with my shockingly purple hair) or keep it traditional. As with any salon, bring photos of what you want (a verbal description can be interpreted so many different ways) and speak up as things are going along. The price is quite high, but this is a high end salon in an expensive area. If you are price conscious - make sure they know how much you want to spend up front, and ask them to tell you when anything is going to be a supplemental charge. Couldn't agree more with everything Erin H said about this salon. Had to sign pages of waiver. A single process coloring with gloss was $300. Tips started 20% for the colorist. A separate tips for the person who washed my hair. My emotions got confused and the happy feeling I just got from the beautiful fresh hair color started melting away. The front desk girl talked loudly behind the glass screen with urge and cold politeness. Feeling panicked, shocked and displeased, I quickly pressed 20%, nodded to the extra tip to the hair washer, and signed the screen pushed to my way. For the most part all of this felt like duress. They should be easy on their desire to get tips from customers! It's a shame that they shove a screen with multiple choice tipping options that start from 20% and that they require separate tips for the hair washing. read more

I did express keratin treatment The service was so nice from reception , complementary drinks to the hair stylist . I was told to keep the treatment in my hair for 1 days at least , " the longer the better " .. I had it for 4 days since I was busy .. long story short I washed my hair if felt like I just had hair mask on and that is it ! I recently had a balayage done at Colour Bar with Ida and had a superb experience. She started the appointment by asking about my lifestyle and my "hair habits." I showed her images of what I wanted and she was very honest in letting me know what we could achieve due to my very full, thick, and super dark hair. I also did an ombre last year which I had attempted to get rid of by putting a box color over it a few months ago. Ida gave me a beautiful, natural looking balayage. She added lots of dimension to my dark hair with hues of chocolate browns, caramels, and some blond. My hair is really dark and tends to pick up a lot of brassy and red tones but with Ida's expertise, that didn't happen at all and I was so relieved!! I, unfortunately, am one of those girls that is STILL looking for the perfect master Colorist. I came to the Colour Bar Studio after doing a google search in my area and then seeing all the great 5 star reviews on Yelp. Everyone seems to rave about this place, and after a horrifying color experience with Encore Color Studio in Fairfax (also one of my reviews), I thought I'd give it a shot. I wish I had done more research. The salon is in an easily accessible location near Tyson's Corner, and it is super nice and quiet. They offer you a cappuccino and biscotti. Customer service is top notch and you definitely pay for that. Now, the bad. Although I do appreciate the effort of the spa atmosphere I wish that the actual color service was up to par because honestly, aren't you going there to get outstanding color? It's called "COLOUR" bar and one of the reasons I picked this place. I expected experienced top level colorist with knowledge behind the chemistry of hair and color and of course for that wow factor, that I did not get! After a lengthy color correction consultation between Tania (the owner), Amanda (my stylist) and myself, I was sure my color would be fantastic. After about 3 hours in the chair my hair looked THE SAME. I am not sure what "correction" was done because I still had patches of hair where no color was applied to and highlights over top of color that did not blend with the new root color that she applied. I didn't notice until I got home and showed my friends that in the back you could still see the strip of about 2 inches of new growth, with another strip of brown base color with no highlights to it. My friend even commented "Did she even touch the back"? I was so angry after having spent almost $400!!!! I wish I had the nerve to complain and ask for my money back but being that I am shy I sat there while she cut my hair (haircut and blow-dry was done beautifully in all fairness) with a disappointed sad face. Amanda even took a picture and said "well, at least it looks beautiful in pictures". Unbelievable. Overall, I would not recommend Colour Bar Studio for dark brunette (level 1b) trying to maintain or achieve blonde hair. This is a very difficult thing to do and requires someone with extensive Color (chemistry of color) knowledge which Amanda did not have. I did see some beautiful caramel highlights leave the salon in my 4 hours that I spent there, for those with darker hair I would give it a try if you want to drop almost a car payment on just OK color. read more

I came to Colour Bar off of the recommendation of a dear, dear friend. I wanted to start looking like a respectable member of society, someone who had graduated from a college and had obtained a job, instead of the homeless schlub that my friends and family reluctantly put up with. My friend said Tiffany Watkins had worked miracles for him and that she could probably do the same for me. When I arrived, Tiffany didn't judge my outward appearance. No. She saw the scared soul peaking out from behind the greasy tentacles of filth I had until then called, "hair." She wanted to help a poor wretch like me. And help is exactly what she did. Maria washed my hair in warm water while I relaxed in the massage chair at the foot of the sudsy head-bowl. I didn't think someone could care so much about the gross cranium of a strange man. I imagined this was how I must have felt when I was baptized as a young lad. When my pains and sorrows had been thoroughly massaged away by her skilled hands, Maria escorted me to Tiffany's station, and I became her charge. For the next 30 minutes or so, we chatted about our hopes, our DREAMS. Sure, she cut my hair. But that was only the start of it. She showed me how to care for hairs and how to make them perform feats I didn't think even professional hair could pull off. I immediately scheduled my next appointment. No one else was to touch a single follicle on my head from then on out. For the next year, my hair was cared for like one of those fat emperors of days long past, being fed grapes as it lounged around on the top of my noggin. Now, alas, I live in California. But, to this day, Tiffany still plays an important role in my style decisions. This was my first time seeing a hair stylist for a color treatment in over 10 years and also wanted to cut off about 9 inches of my hair, so I decided to splurge and invest more money than I usually would to feel like a queen for the day. The front desk staff was very nice! They gave me a questionnaire to fill out to make sure they knew what I wanted and what my current washing and styling regime was. So far, so good, right? Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. I was introduced to my stylist and she reviewed my answers on what I wanted, etc. When it came to the kind of coloring service I wanted, I had said during the initial appointment call that I wanted a balayage and I wrote as much on the questionnaire as well. However, the stylist kept wanting to do a foliage. When I intercepted and I asked if she knew that I wanted a balayage, she said yes, then kept on talking about foil highlights. To make sure she understood I even asked her to explain the difference to me (I know the difference - I just wanted to make sure this wasn't some sort of communication gap). She explained that the foliage would be tiny highlights all over, the balayage would be "painted in", which is what I wanted. After that I told her I wanted the balayage and she - I'm not kidding - literally just stopped talking completely and just stared me down for a full minute before she kept on talking...about a foliage. Then, when I said again that I was pretty sure I wanted a balayage, she got visibly annoyed and asked me to search for pictures on instagram of what I wanted. I did and showed her pictures literally labeled "BALAYAGE" - she ended up defying me and saying that those were "chunky highlights". So instead of getting what I asked for REPEATEDLY, I ended up with foils and tiny highlights all over my hair because it was "less maintenance". I did put on the questionnaire that I wanted something that was easy to maintain, since I don't have time to go to the salon to freshen up every few weeks, but that is not what I wanted or meant. While she was coloring, another hair stylist came over to compliment her on her foil technique and said that she wanted to switch from balayage to foils, too because she wanted "to be a high maintenance girl from now on". So much for less work with foils?! After being forced to sit with my knees pressed against the marble counter of the 'color bar' for an eternity, they moved me to the washing area, where a, I assume, hairdresser in training started ripping at my hair to the point of tears welling up in my eyes. I have a pretty high pain tolerance and lot of understanding for these women, I really do, but this was beyond anything I have ever encountered. The massage chair was okay, but any and all relaxation just went out the window when she started combing through my hair. I don't think she ever put in conditioner, even though she was asked if she had put it in and said yes (just washing routine-wise it didn't line up). I also never got my promised head massage because she kept getting interrupted (not necessarily her fault, but something I was looking forward to). In the end, I left there with very obvious foil highlights that now require maintenance, a mediocre haircut (she asked how I wanted it styled, I said I wanted cute curls to show the color transitions....she stared me down again, then straightened it and called it a day), a scalp that was literally painful to the touch and raw for the next 2 weeks because of the ripping and with about $600 less money in my pocket for service + tip. This was such an unbelievable disappointment. I'm not going back. read more

$1100 yes, you read that correctly. $1100 for a single person's 3 hour visit to a near empty salon. $740 for cut, color touch up , some low lights and a "must" hair treatment I was told was simply crucial for my hair. Add on top of that the bag ready to go for you as you try to check out that has neatly packed inside items you didn't remotely suggest you were interested in, including: a shampoo, conditioner, and the "part 3 of the must do" hair treatment bringing the total to $940. The receptionist rings that up behind the desk but while your jaw hits the floor, then sweetly walks you thru the screen prompt for TIPPY so now the tipping portion can begin!! At this part, with a smile on her face, you are prompted to tip 20%, 25% or 30% for the owner (remember the good ole days of the owner didn't expect to be tipped???) with the 20% staring at you for $150!!! Oh you're not done yet....now she tells you the next screen is to tip the (very sweet) hair washer $7 or more dollars. I say, "doesn't the stylist pay her a portion of tip?" To which she replies, "Oh noooo, that tip is only for our owner!" (Smiling all the while as though this is all very normal!). Add it up and you're at $1100. Now keep in mind, you are also reminded to come back see you in about a month as you head out the door. To top it off, your hair just looks "ok." The blow dry was awful and my hair had no fullness or bounce to it at all. I had to get home and restyle it. Without a doubt, being somebody who spends a fair amount at salons and travels extensively to NYC, San Fran and London, this is BY FAR the MOST expensive hair salons I have ever been to by a factor of 3. Just this past January, I was in a highly recommended salon on Fifth Avenue in NYC and spent all in $400. After leaving ColourBar, you're so shell shocked you can't speak. You get home and are just simply disgusted with yourself for being so, so stupid. I found this place off of reviews like Yelp and Google and I'm completely convinced (working in the Artificial Intelligence sector) that the more than likely the majority of these reviews aren't likely written by anybody others than staff or friends of the salon. The owner and her kids work there yet not any real detail behind her years in the field, her experience or training. The salon is also nearly empty (wonder why?!). When you walk in, the sheer amount of paperwork they have you fill out, I started to wonder what was up because it says quite a few times about "no refunds." You read this so often that you are wondering to yourself "do people ask for refunds at this place?" The fees for a blow out are outrageous too and also spelled out with "unless you choose a junior stylist, the fee is $X for a blow out." I've NEVER, EVER been so disgusted by such a blatant, totally outrageous pricing scheme in my life. They say pricing is determined by the person's "level." What does that mean and who decides "the level" of the stylist? I have told at least 2 dozen people alone today what a complete and utter rip off this place is and how simply appalling that people like me (who can afford it) are just ignorant for not standing up and walking out. Go somewhere else people! Go to NYC if you want to throw money into a damn cut and color!! But I had to write this review (which I never do) because I can't help but think of all the countless young people struggling from COVID and trying to make ends meet in this expensive area and trying to warn them before they too get bamboozled. There is ZERO publicly available pricing. I honestly believe they size you up when you sit down to talk to the stylist and just start adding and adding and adding in on their "client notes" the dollars so that you a) can't say they didn't tell you beforehand how much the services were and b) to see if you flinch. I've been sick about it for the last 24 hours. I can promise you that there will be nobody in Northern Virginia who doesn't know how you are scamming innocent people just trying to enjoy a day at a salon. It's horrific how you are simply price gouging. Shame on you. And please, please don't try to suggest in a response that this is so disappointing to read, etc...You play people and you know it. Shameful. If you can't afford the McLean rent (since the salon is clearly empty compared to the size of it) then downsize and treat people with fairness and ethical business practices. read more

I definitely recommend COLOUR BAR STUDIO to men looking for a great cut. Tania Ferrel has been styling my hair for about 4 years now and she has always known what I was looking for. I have recommended her to my father and a couple friends and they love her. The new location is great, across the street from Tyson's Corner. Thank you for fixing my hair! I've been a box color user for many, many years. I know it's a sin, but some of us can't afford salon color all the time. For some reason I can never find my color out here, at least not in the brand my hairstylist friend in AZ recommended. So I tried a new one, the week of a very fancy wedding that I was attending. Holy hell was that a mistake. The new dye reacted to the worn dye that was left on my hair and the color was a MESS. Fancy wedding: 3 days away. I searched Yelp for a color correction salon near my work and found Colour Bar. I was able to make an appointment the same day. Tiffany was awesome. She spent the time to find the perfect color to get me back to and she didn't scold me for using box color. She even gave me a "clean up" trim so my hair would look uber healthy for the wedding! This particular service is PRICEY, but really worth it. At Colour Bar you absolutely get what you pay for. read more

I've been really torn on how to write this review. The more I think about this experience, I am just plainly disappointed with their customer service. Color can be fixed, but poor customer service leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. When I left Colour Bar my hair (naturally dark brown - went in for root touch up and med brown highlights), my hair looked great. Since I had spent a small fortune on this color I wanted to make sure it lasted! I even followed directions and waited three days before washing it. When I washed it, I used the $$$ color safe shampoo they recommended and sold me. After one washing I quickly realized the highlights were waaay too light and the glaze didn't seem to help as it appeared to fully wash out. Since they were lighter than they should have been, a few days later, I used the $$$ color mask they sold me to tone down brass and deepen color. Since the highlights were SO light, the teal colored mask turned them green! At this point I should have been using a mask for blonde hair, not brown - that's how light they had become! During this time I was dealing with family medical emergencies, so by the time I called Colour Bar, it had been a week and a half since my initial color. When I explained what had happened and that I was now sporting green highlights, they seemed to know what was going on and suggested I come back in for another glaze to tone down the highlights. When I asked if there would be a charge for this service, they said it was $40, then there was hesitation and eventually they said "oh okay, no charge, but you have to come in this week" No apology. What the heck, you made the highlights too light, then sold me a mask that was for the color they should've been not what they were, and then you make me feel badly for not being happy with green highlights?! Not great customer service. I ended up having to cancel my follow up glaze appointment due to getting the dreaded flu and not wanting to share my germs, ugh! At this point it was beyond the time for my freebie corrective glaze, so I gave up on Colour Bar. I ended up going to another salon and now I am sporting highlights that are the correct color. I've literally never spent so much money or wasted SO much time to leave feeling like I got NOTHING remotely close to what I wanted or paid for. I spent 3 hours there, and just shy of $500, only to literally leave hastily, so I could go cry outside while I waited for my ride. I made an appointment to have them "fix" my color, which is NOTHING close to what I asked for, but you cannot fix the over 3 inches in length that was taken off that I didn't ask to be taken off. I showed SEVERAL pictures from Pinterest and my own Instagram pictures of ME with the color and cut I wanted, and yet I left with hair that looked NOTHING like any of the pictures I showed her - not the pictures from Pinterest or even the pictures of MYSELF of my hair from the last time I'd had it colored doing balayage A FEW MONTHS AGO. When she did the balayage, and I told her my hair lifted very light, but that I preferred to have more icy blonde, she didn't even bother showing me the color I lifted to before deciding to put a WARM RED GLAZE TONER on my hair.  I never asked for anything WARM or RED; I said ICY, which is cool.  I would have NEVER approved of the toner color, and would have reminded her what I asked for: more of an icy blonde, as seen in pictures of MYSELF from only a few months ago when I had my color done PROPERLY.  Also, the "styling" of my hair, the blow dry experience, was a complete joke. My hair was basically air dry at the point she went to blow dry style it, and she lazily parted it, ran a blow dryer over it, and barely flat ironed the ends. I used my hands and tossled it, grabbed my purse, and hurried to the counter to pay so I could leave as fast as possible and cry outside.  I have never gotten up faster, and paid faster to get out of a salon so I could go outside and cry.  I tipped 20% out of etiquette; however, I do not feel like what I paid nearly $500 for is anything REMOTELY CLOSE to what I wanted or asked for, or showed COUNTLESS PICTURES OF MYSELF to her of.   I left feeling ugly, unheard, and like I was likely in better hands at a lower tiered salon like Bubbles.  I don't mind spending nearly $500 if I get what I'm asking for, as I typically go to an Aveda salon or Lifetime's hair salon in Gainesville, and in pay about the same, or more, but get what I'm asking for so I don't mind.  At Colour Bar, I spent nearly $500 to get the opposite of what I wanted and left in tears, and wasted 3 hours of my Saturday to do so.  Also, to be VERY clear, everything I asked for is what's already been done on my hair RECENTLY, within the last few months, so it was not out of reach or an unreasonable request whatsoever. I do not recommend this salon, as the entire experience was terrible. The stylist was friendly enough, but I didn't pay nearly $500 to chit chat with a pleasant person, especially not so I could leave feeling unattractive and like she didn't listen to any of what I wanted or follow any of the pictures of ME, showing the color and length I asked for.   I'm still in tears as I write this, and I don't have high hopes for them to fix my color, as I'm sure they'll just fry my hair now and waste more of my time and likely request more money.  Save your money and go see Darlene at Lifetime Hair Salon in Gainesville, as she's a stylist who LISTENS and does what you ask her to do; the drive is worth getting what you ask for and you'll leave feeling pretty vs leaving in tears and crying all night and like you wasted valuable time and lost inches of your hair you can't just magically get back.  NOTHING I asked of my stylist today was out of reach or unattainable during my visit; it was quite the opposite. Now, that she's put a warm reddish glaze over my hair, that was the literal antithesis of what I asked for and did NOT approve of, it will be hard to lift the hideous warm red and give me the ICY BLONDE I had asked for, and likely achieved once I was done processing before she chose to put a disgusting warm red tone over top. I'm just literally so upset with taking a chance on a salon that is somehow top rated, because if I could give my experience today zero stars, I would. read more

Went in to get all over blonde highlights done. My hair is naturally a dark brown (almost black) and is naturally curly. The master hairstylist went above and beyond my expectations. He did an incredible job and did so in a timely manner. The highlights were exactly like the photo I showed and were even throughout my head. Highly recommend this salon! read more

I had an amazing experience at Colour Bar Studios today. Everyone was so nice & welcoming, and the salon is clean & comfortable. I came specifically for Elly and she did a great job. She has been doing my hair for almost 6 years and I refuse to see another hair stylist. She works her magic when it comes to coloring hair and she does amazing styling with her blow dryer. Whenever my hair needs help she saves the day. If I am ever unsure of what I want to do with my hair, I just tell her to surprise me with something pretty and she never disappoints! read more
