I almost fell of my bike when I spotted this place. I'd never ventured this far up Port Road…read morebefore, but I'm glad I did. Banquet Food Wholesalers is like Gaganis Bros, but BIGGER and BETTER. And sells booze. Lots of it. Ohhh Italian food makes me so happy. Italian wines make me even happier. Here they sell many varieties that I haven't see in bottle shops in Australia (as well as some local wines that you do see around). They have a huge range of spritzers and flavoured liqueurs. And they do a lot of deals if you buy in bulk. Half of the store is canned and packaged goods, very similar to Gaganis Bros in terms of product, price and set out. It feels very much like a wholesaler in this part. The section that got me really excited was the enormous deli. They have two separate delis here, one for cured meats and cheeses and antipasto, and another for meats. And they are both huge. Their prices here are not overly cheap, but the quality looks great. Then there is the frozen section, with finger-food, fish, frozen veges and frozen fresh pasta. I was giddy after a while spent browsing through the whole place. I desperately wanted to eat everything! (Preferably cooked, but some I would chow straight into.) And, of course, there is a sweets section, mostly biscotti. I find the sweets one of the least exciting things about Italian cooking, but if you like them, there are plenty of authentic tasties here. If only it were a little cheaper, this would be my new favourite place on earth. Or at least in the Adelaide Western Suburbs.

I've discovered this shop recently and keep going back. They have a huge selection of food and…read morewines to serve at a party without spending a fortune. They also operate like a regular deli selling amounts suited for every day and have some terrific discounts.

Warning: Costco is not a grocery store. It is a warehouse where YOU WILL SAVE WITHOUT EVEN TRYING…read moreat least hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year dependent on your own shopping needs. Some reviewers such as Daniel G are confused by Costco and what it entails therefore must Yelp negativity and opinion more than fact. I grew up shopping at Costco and understand what it is ALL about. In order to be able to shop at Costco you pay an annual membership of $60/$5 a month - very affordable. I love that because you don't have randoms filling the store looking around or hanging out like you do at most shops. Here you have serious shoppers. In saying that, there are times that are worth avoiding if possible, mainly the weekend. Just look at the parking lot and you get a clear idea how busy the warehouse will be. Costco offers shoppers bulk buy deals. If you simply can not store 48 rolls of toilet paper for ($20-27 dependent on the brand) or 8 boxes of tissues for $18 then this is not your kind of shopping. Yes, the trolleys are huge and need to be based on larger product quantities. Don't look like a learner driver and bring in a Coles shopping trolley! Get used to the warehouse environment and bigger aisles. The shopping at Costco is MORE than just food. You have electronics, appliances, house ware, clothing, shoes, prescription glasses, care tyres, jewelry and even furniture. The deals available at Costco show savvy customers how much margin the general stores have and that sales at a grocery store are just a ploy not a fact. In my first shop I saved on the following verses shopping at Woolworths: At COSTCO vs. WOOLWORTH'S Costco - 6 pack of Tuna 425g cans = $22 Woolys- 1 can of tuna 425 = $5 (on sale) (Save $8) Costco - Coconut oil 900g = $14 Woolys - Coconut oil 300g = $6 (Save $4) Costco - Cacao powder 1kg = $17 Woolys - Cacao powder 250g = $6 (Save $7) I also save on eggs, milk, meat, cheeses, bacon, juice, frozen foods, veggies, shampoo & conditioner. You WILL save. And if you don't need that much of something split the bill with a family member or friend! Lastly, there are no plastic bags to put your bulk items in. There may be some leftover cardboard boxes to use at checkout and be more earth conscious than the grocery stores. Enjoy the experience but please don't be confused. COSTCO is not a grocery store. It is a warehouse with good deals and NO condescending commercials like the two main grocers pay millions for annually - so why do you think WE SAVE SO MUCH!! Thank you Costco for no commercials!!!

First was told that there was a mix up and the company missed my order on Tuesday but had been picked up that morning. Further into conversation was told that it was still waiting to be picked up. I then said I was going to be in Adelaide the next day and I could pick it up instead because it was an urgent order which is why I paid for express. I was told that they needed to speak with their manager and then call me back. There was no call back. Come to today, the following Monday and my parcel has finally arrived, a week after ordering and paying for express. The contents however are incorrect. I have called them again. I need to wait and call them back tomorrow though because apparently there are a lot of online orders and they can't talk to me about mine. They also need to speak with whoever packed my order. Very very uncooperative. I asked to speak with the manager. Was told that the manager probably wouldn't want to talk with me. I was put on hold. Dead silence for 15 minutes before I hung up. So I've paid for an order with express shipping. Incorrect order delivered, was not treated as express and unwilling to help rectify the problem. Definitely do not recommend this company.

Bulk is bigger and better!…read more Having frequented Gaganis for years it has become my monthly ritual shop to stock up on raw foods. Fortunately they extended the trading hours on Saturdays to 2.30pm awhile ago so that there is no longer a mad dash down Port Rd on Saturday mornings. Excellent prices and and a great range of Mediterranean/European food keep me coming back. I'm obviously a fan but not alone - nearly the entire Greek/Italian population of Adelaide pass through this enormous warehouse regularly. If you are in the market for continental meats, cheese, coffee, bread, olive oil, nuts, seeds, herbs, condiments, baking items etc etc - this is the place to head. The more obscure can also be found ... canned chipotles, dried cherries, a whole sauerkrauted cabbage and maraschino cherries with stems were all noted on a recent visit. (They have also extended their range of Indian foods.) New to Gaganis is the Greek equivalent of Bunning's sausage sizzle. Daily you can smell the enticing smell of grilled beef chevapchichi, warmed pita, onions and a continental salad wafting through the car park. Certainly more tempting and less fattening (maybe?) and definitely more entertaining (the Greek chef always has an anecdote) than the more conventional Aussie alternative! Beware: Christmas and Easter are potentially fraught as the car park overflows and tempers fray!!

Once upon a time I would never dream of going into a discount super market, oh what I was missing!…read moreRite Price is a wonderful place, especially if you don't believe what the used by date says! There are many products that are in date and you can really get a great bargain, and then there are the Eastern European Imported products that are as entertaining as finding a tin in your pantry without a label and daring yourself into eating whatever the contents may be! I particularly like the Prospect Venue as I have found the staff there particularly friendly and always keen for a brief chin wag while scanning your goods....not too much of a chat, just enough to pass the check out time. No one likes a 'Chatty Cathy'! P.S. If you have a sweet tooth like myself you save a bundle if you stock up rather than going to traditional sources!

So here's a little insight into my background: I grew up in a family who owned a supermarket…read moremeaning that anytime that something was about to go out of date....or actually DID, it would end up on our dinner table - and here's the thing...I never got sick and it always tasted great (which could have something to do with my mum being some what of a master chef...) Anyhow, my point is that the 'use by' or 'best before' is just a date for legal purposes (for many but not all products)...there is a bit of flexibility here. Those of you unfamiliar with the Rite Price chain may wonder why I am bringing this up, so here's the deal: Rite Price is a discount supermarket. Not all, but most of there wares are on the shelves because they are near this use-by or past their best before and are therefore severely discounted. So here's a depressing fact - 20% of all our groceries go to waste...and I recall that when we had the supermarket, a lot of stuff ended up in the bin. It's such a shame to straight out waste food - but you can prevent food being wasted by supermarkets AND save yourself a BUNCH of dolla dolla by having a look at Rite Price! Now they don't have EVERYTHING but if you head here first, you can definitely plan around what you can find and as the previous reviewer wrote, yes there are always plenty of cheap treats for the sweet tooth. Recent bargains - HUGE wheels of cheese - brie, blue and all the fancy ones, still in date for a few days for only $4.50. Perfect for the weekend picnic, yes? Added bonus - they are now open til 7pm on Thursdays for all those who work all day long! - enjoy the cheap life!

Pimlott is a handy Art Supplies and Framing store located on Torrens Road in Croyden Park…read more It is a bit out of my way, and I don't generally come here for day to day supplies. Their range of art materials is quite good, although a bit limited when compared to the larger art retailers. Their real specialty is framing, which they do well and have a good range of frames available, although again nothing, spectacularly exceptional. The real reason Pimlott Framing, stands out to me is that they are one of the few stores in Adelaide that stock d-rings (the standard picture hanging supports required by most galleries), in large quantities, and at close to wholesale prices. I was recently preparing for an exhibition of about 15 paintings and spent about two days running around every art store/picture framer in town looking for d-rings until I found Pimlott. An absolute life saver. Also, Pimlott, also stocks lots of other hard to find materials for do it yourself picture framing, which is great if you are trying to do things on the cheap.

Some of the prices are hard to beat and whenever I've needed something that is hard to find elsewhere, I've usually found that they have it at Pimlott. I have pleasure in referring people here, you won't be disappointed.

I was originally attracted to the big spiders for hanging on the wall, because they are kind of unusual and not so real they'd freak you out; upon closer inspection the shop is crammed full of all sorts of really wonderful odds and sods. Bangles, beads, book ends, wall hangings, candle sticks, sarongs, bags, a few baskets; all pretty much imported stuff from all over the place. Not too expensive and a great variety of things. African carvings and probably Indonesian, Indian, some Australian as well, I've been in several time and still see stuff I didn't notice the first and last time, if you get what I mean. It is a family business (as in wife and husband), so you can rely on them if you are looking for something unusual to help you out - they know their stock pretty well and since so much of it is wood they do a fair amount of polishing and keeping things fresh. I really like wood so I really enjoy having a look through this shop. Some items are quite small and then they vary in size through to really large features objects like elephants and giraffes. From little beginnings come larger longer innings, and that's what is developing here with Ben and his grocery shop; right at the moment he is in Sydney with his partner who is having a baby, so the store is going to be on part time until at least June 2012. He is sourcing products for his Sydney store and slowly but surely building the stock; eventually this is going to be a full store stocked with local fresh produce that takes a sustainable route towards prosperity for all of us. Right now it is essentially dry goods and all very reasonably priced. This is an alternative nation to the Big W's or C's that currently form the mainstay of these types of collections in terms of goods on the shelf. There are ethical choices being made every step along the way and the message is that we can decide to go with the smaller, more thoughtful, more community spirited vendor every time. He's not there quite yet, but he is well on his way to getting 'there', and if you believe in the wholefood revolution and you have a spirit that supports the whole 'Occupy Wallstreet' mentality then you can become a Face book friend, become a Twitter-er, become a supporter and most important of all become a return customer. He's got flour, coffee, ice cream, jam, juice, bread and more. Check it out, and rest assured it will grow - he took a ten year lease on the shop so he's not going anywhere in a hurry. Once Ben gets back from Sydney he will introduce the fresh produce into the store and extend the back of it a little so you will see some development and changes within the year then they will be a seven day a week store. Now you play a part in this process; it is up to you to shop in the store if you are in the area, and return and return. The thing is, you will want to. Ben is confident you will, and having spoken to him and checked out his website, I'm also confident. He already sources good dry produce for a store he runs in Glebe in New South Wales, and this little strip of shops here in Queen Street have a similarity to the whole Glebe Point Road situation in Sydney, so support the movement. You'll be the one who reaps the benefit in the end.

There have been a few different businesses tried out in this shop front and this is another new one…read morewhich just might make it. A small shop being a cross between a supermarket, deli and convenience store but not big enough to either fully. The funky, trendy decor blends in beautifully with the street scape's other shops, but what it does carry though is gourmet, organic produce sourced from local and independant wholesalers and suppliers. The packaging is simple and understated much like the stamp printed name of the shop, right down to the font used, so you can tell there's been some time, effort and research put into it. But it's not open everyday which makes me think it's a part time project to see if it takes off and I truly hope it does. On the decor front it has a subtle colour scheme creating a very laid back and relaxed feel to it, predominately in black, white and brown. Walls are lined with prepackaged flour, grains, sweets, pasta, nuts, sugar, rice and much more. Then you've got the glass jars of assorted pickled vegetables and condiments, free range eggs, aprons, tea towels and more. Also available is fair trade coffee and soy candles which are prominent in the store. There isn't any kitchenware but there's only so much which can fit, I noticed a pair of hand made sneakers for sale but I really think they should leave that side of handmade alone and focus on what I'm sure will be a successful venture.
