I can see the origins here of something that will one day be a much greater empire in spite of itself. From little beginnings come larger longer innings, and that's what is developing here with Ben and his grocery shop; right at the moment he is in Sydney with his partner who is having a baby, so the store is going to be on part time until at least June 2012. He is sourcing products for his Sydney store and slowly but surely building the stock; eventually this is going to be a full store stocked with local fresh produce that takes a sustainable route towards prosperity for all of us. Right now it is essentially dry goods and all very reasonably priced. This is an alternative nation to the Big W's or C's that currently form the mainstay of these types of collections in terms of goods on the shelf. There are ethical choices being made every step along the way and the message is that we can decide to go with the smaller, more thoughtful, more community spirited vendor every time. He's not there quite yet, but he is well on his way to getting 'there', and if you believe in the wholefood revolution and you have a spirit that supports the whole 'Occupy Wallstreet' mentality then you can become a Face book friend, become a Twitter-er, become a supporter and most important of all become a return customer. He's got flour, coffee, ice cream, jam, juice, bread and more. Check it out, and rest assured it will grow - he took a ten year lease on the shop so he's not going anywhere in a hurry. Once Ben gets back from Sydney he will introduce the fresh produce into the store and extend the back of it a little so you will see some development and changes within the year then they will be a seven day a week store. Now you play a part in this process; it is up to you to shop in the store if you are in the area, and return and return. The thing is, you will want to. Ben is confident you will, and having spoken to him and checked out his website, I'm also confident. He already sources good dry produce for a store he runs in Glebe in New South Wales, and this little strip of shops here in Queen Street have a similarity to the whole Glebe Point Road situation in Sydney, so support the movement. There have been a few different businesses tried out in this shop front and this is another new one which just might make it. A small shop being a cross between a supermarket, deli and convenience store but not big enough to either fully. The funky, trendy decor blends in beautifully with the street scape's other shops, but what it does carry though is gourmet, organic produce sourced from local and independant wholesalers and suppliers. The packaging is simple and understated much like the stamp printed name of the shop, right down to the font used, so you can tell there's been some time, effort and research put into it. But it's not open everyday which makes me think it's a part time project to see if it takes off and I truly hope it does. On the decor front it has a subtle colour scheme creating a very laid back and relaxed feel to it, predominately in black, white and brown. Walls are lined with prepackaged flour, grains, sweets, pasta, nuts, sugar, rice and much more. Then you've got the glass jars of assorted pickled vegetables and condiments, free range eggs, aprons, tea towels and more. Also available is fair trade coffee and soy candles which are prominent in the store. There isn't any kitchenware but there's only so much which can fit, I noticed a pair of hand made sneakers for sale but I really think they should leave that side of handmade alone and focus on what I'm sure will be a successful venture. read more

Don't let the boutique appearance of this oh-so-lovely grocery fool you. The prices are pretty much rock bottom, although they do stock a whole variety of 'luxury items' they also have staple legumes, pulses, grains, beans, flours, salts, spices, organic teas and coffees, SA honey and oils, dried fruits. Not everything is organic but the emphasis is on products from small local producers. I love that there are little signs letting you know the comparable price for certain items in a handful of the major supermarket chains. If you're looking for something exotic they stock the trend-tastic grain quinoa, white is around $9.50 for a kilo and the more exotic red is around $15. They also have Agave, a sweetner used by those who are a little wholistic when it comes to their temple bodies (all natural). There are as many nuts and seeds as you could possibly dream of as well as, nut butters, single origin cacao & chocolate products, pastas and biodynamic rice varieties. The space is small but jam packed with useful pantry products and the service relaxed and welcoming. I nabbed a bag of polenta for just $2.95 and Lupini beans for the same price. Lupinis are the bean I muched with beer - usually a crisp lager, all over portugal... now I just have to figure out how to turn the dry product into the succulent salty number I remember! read more

Now THIS is my kind of store! I've been here twice now in the past week and really you need to go back a few times to really absorb the wide range of products they sell. From legumes to flours to teas and everything in between. This place has a lot of the basic grocery staples I have in my house. No more having to travel in to the city and pay some crazy ass parking and product prices when something that satisfies my whole food and organic pantry staples in the west where Iive! I love supporting local small businesses, especially ones that try and support local producers etc. Queen Street Grocer does just this, it's not entirely SA produce BUT they do try to place an emphasis on SA and Australian. Live near the inner west and need some good organic, Gluten free or Gourmet goodies just pop into the Queen Street Grocer. They source a lot of goodies from all over the place, focusing on local items when they can. The range is growing and it is diverse, from Almonds, to Quinoa and even body products and organic locally roasted coffee, it's well worth a visit, even it you are just passing and want some high quality ingredients. read more

Being an increasingly large consumer of gourmet food items, and therefore, a more regular customer of all manner of delis, be they daggy or funky, I found this place to be a great spot to grab most of what I need in one shopping expedition for the week, rather than my regular two or three. The range is pretty awesome. Lots of stuff I haven't seen elsewhere, other stuff that I know I can get elsewhere, but can be hard to get to, and pretty much all the regular stuff that you expect from a good deli. read more

I am so lucky to have the QSG at the end of my street. I'm forever popping in for important basics like coffee, eggs, nuts, exotic sound flours and fancy teas. Their range of raw locally made desserts are fantastic for a not-so-guilt free treat and if your lucky enough to drop in when they have fresh Riverland produce some such as apricots or avocados you will be having a good day indeed. The staff are always so friendly and ready for a chat. They are a fresher face on the street but definitely part of the ever changing Queen St Community. read more
