Maybe it's because of the occasional hurricanes, I don't know. Riverfront Park tries to rectify this situation, and does so splendidly. This is a typical city park, with a large lawn area, many picnic tables, playground, lots of oak trees. Many houses close by, so I'm sure that it's used quite a bit by residents who walk there to relax. The hunny and I visited during the annual Riverfest. Most of the large lawn area was taken up by food booths and carnival rides. At the eastern edge was a portable stage where several hundred sat to hear Tauren Wells sing. And now for the five-star rating: It's on the river. Yes, this is a true waterfront park. There is a large parking lot with boat ramp, and a classic Southern riverfront restaurant on the other side of that parking lot. It was a treat to see the barges go by during the Tauren Wells concert. Riverfront Park took advantage of its setting with a boat show on Sunday. I'm going to go back there. One of my favorite dates with the Hunny was when we drove into the California Delta south of Sacramento, stopped at a choke-and-puke deli and got some food, then crossed over the levee road to sit on a dock and eat. No improvisation is necessary here, although if you don't go to the nearby restaurant, you'll need to bring your own grub. She'll love the setting. And you will too. Parting thought: it's not an easy drive from the freeway, and FM 365 does not lead directly to the park.

For a family member's birthday, I wanted to mix it up and do something a little different. I…read moregoogled and googled and stumbled across "The Haunted Hotel Experience". I was really surprised I had not heard of this, being there is only so much to do in SETX. First off, don't let the name "Haunted Hotel" fool you, this is not a super scary people attempting to scare you type experience. It is set up in a building beside and shares a wall with the former Haunted Hotel in Beaumont. What is it? A game. A game that will have you locked inside a room or rooms where you will have to work as a group to find clues, solve puzzles and riddles to escape. These games will change every so often throughout the year to keep things fresh. My group chose "The Haunted Hotel Experience" which consisted of three rooms, set up as a serial killer's apartment. Note that the remainder of this review is based on the experience of this specific game, which is changing in November 2016. While the apartment itself is a little creepy, it is by no means "frightening/scary". The price: Regular pricing as of the time of this review is $35 per person, however, check their Facebook business page as they often have promo codes. I was able to score tickets for $25/piece. Prior to booking, I had messaged staff via their Facebook page informing them that I may not have a babysitter and asked if my toddler would need a ticket. Thankfully, they were kind enough to not make me pay additional for her. When we first arrived, we entered a small area, were greeted by staff who explained the rules and had a lock box to place cellular devices (as they do not want any photographs or videos taken). I know some are totally attached to their cell phones, so know prior you will need to keep them in your vehicle or the lockbox. A staff member will be present in the room during the duration of the game. After the rules were explained, the staff member took us down a dark hallway (he even turned on a small light for my toddler not to be scared). We entered a darkly lit small room with flickering lights that had newspaper and writing/blood splatter covering the walls. There is a small intro where a creepy voice tells you the "story" and that you have an hour to escape. At this point, my kiddo was saying she was a little frightened, but we quickly found the code to unlock an additional door which led into a brightly lit large room. After that, she was totally INTO the game, looking everywhere for clues and trying to "help" the adults. The staff member even helped lead her to some clues so she felt apart of the game. In the beginning the staff member is "handcuffed" in the first room, and after you find the key to the handcuffs you can decide whether or not to uncuff. Let me tell you, it is beneficial to unlock him :) If you're totally sucking, he sort of helps move things along without completely giving away the answer. Or if you don't want help, he won't assist per request. Plus the staff member we got was pretty funny and made the experience that much better. This game is extremely well thought-out. I was truly amazed how all the pieces and clues fit together. Someone thought long and hard about this. Thankfully we had a couple analytical minds on a crew that helped knock out some riddles. I personally just did a great job of unlocking the locks with the keys other people found :P The game typically is for a group of 12, we had 6 and got SO CLOSE but unfortunately, ran out of time before winning the game. By the end of it, my toddler asked the staff if we could "please have more time"! After the game, if you win you get to take a group picture with "winner" signs. If you lose well.... you take a picture with loser signs. LOL Being overly critical, I wish they would have a better camera for more flattering photos :P Seriously, everyone in SETX should experience this, at the very least, once in their life! Such a unique and fun way to spend your time. Talk about a wonderful team-building exercise. Highly highly recommend. A huge thank-you to Paige for taking the time to answer all of our questions about the reptiles and for helping us relax enough to hold a snake for the first time in our lives. She mentioned it was only her first week on the job, and I have to say--Gator Country made a great hire. We're so glad we got to meet such a sweet person!

Southeast Texas has a Disc Golf culture growing and this course will help sustain it in the future…read moreyears to come. I am from the area, but do not live here any longer. I am a very avid Disc Golfer and I have played some of the best courses around...so coming home to SETx every now and then, while knowing this course is consistently improving, makes me feel good about our beloved sport in the area. The course is a great challenge for all levels. It contains many Risk vs. Reward scenarios. So choose wisely. If you are an "Open/Pro" player then leave your "Big Arm" at home and bring your finesse bag for the show. If you are a mid-ranked player and can average placement drives about 350-400ft this course allows you to carefully do that on some holes while teaching you to throttle back on some technical/tight ones and simply ensure that you place it where you need to make the next Birdie shot. If you are New/Novice/Recreational player, then this course will fit all your needs to teach you the great aspects of Disc Golf. It gives you some great open fairway shots to drive on hard, it gives you some nice technical shots that test your approach skills, and for the closing it will give you a chance for that awe inspiring attempt at a great putt. All in all... when you try any of the three experience levels mentioned, there is that great opportunity to yell and whoop up a cheer of success or the happy (but painful) "auuggghhh" of almost getting what you wanted out of the challenge. The local disc golf groups and Golden Triangle Disc Golf Club do their utmost to keep the course in it's best condition despite: droughts, hurricanes, and anything else in between those extremes. They work with the city and community to ensure it meets everyone's needs. If you are not from the area, please know that the history of the park WAS sordid.. and Disc Golfers help remove all the deviants and rift raft from the area; sure, like any park, there are still some less than stellar citizens that go there for nefarious reasons.. but they are shunned away by the constant activity of the Disc Golfers at the location. So please think about the park if you are looking for a simple place to have a lunch break in a clean park, when you want to have some grassy fields for the kids to play on, when you want to walk the trails/paths of the area... and of course... when you want to play the Lifetime and Lifestyle Sport we affectionately call Disc Golf!

It is well designed, detailed, spooky, and has a few surprises. There are quite a few manual locks mixed with some higher technology magnetic locks that make this experience different. The outside of the building gives off a creepy feel, but wouldn't expect anything less from the owners of a haunted house business.
