For a family member's birthday, I wanted to mix it up and do something a little different. I…read moregoogled and googled and stumbled across "The Haunted Hotel Experience". I was really surprised I had not heard of this, being there is only so much to do in SETX. First off, don't let the name "Haunted Hotel" fool you, this is not a super scary people attempting to scare you type experience. It is set up in a building beside and shares a wall with the former Haunted Hotel in Beaumont. What is it? A game. A game that will have you locked inside a room or rooms where you will have to work as a group to find clues, solve puzzles and riddles to escape. These games will change every so often throughout the year to keep things fresh. My group chose "The Haunted Hotel Experience" which consisted of three rooms, set up as a serial killer's apartment. Note that the remainder of this review is based on the experience of this specific game, which is changing in November 2016. While the apartment itself is a little creepy, it is by no means "frightening/scary". The price: Regular pricing as of the time of this review is $35 per person, however, check their Facebook business page as they often have promo codes. I was able to score tickets for $25/piece. Prior to booking, I had messaged staff via their Facebook page informing them that I may not have a babysitter and asked if my toddler would need a ticket. Thankfully, they were kind enough to not make me pay additional for her. When we first arrived, we entered a small area, were greeted by staff who explained the rules and had a lock box to place cellular devices (as they do not want any photographs or videos taken). I know some are totally attached to their cell phones, so know prior you will need to keep them in your vehicle or the lockbox. A staff member will be present in the room during the duration of the game. After the rules were explained, the staff member took us down a dark hallway (he even turned on a small light for my toddler not to be scared). We entered a darkly lit small room with flickering lights that had newspaper and writing/blood splatter covering the walls. There is a small intro where a creepy voice tells you the "story" and that you have an hour to escape. At this point, my kiddo was saying she was a little frightened, but we quickly found the code to unlock an additional door which led into a brightly lit large room. After that, she was totally INTO the game, looking everywhere for clues and trying to "help" the adults. The staff member even helped lead her to some clues so she felt apart of the game. In the beginning the staff member is "handcuffed" in the first room, and after you find the key to the handcuffs you can decide whether or not to uncuff. Let me tell you, it is beneficial to unlock him :) If you're totally sucking, he sort of helps move things along without completely giving away the answer. Or if you don't want help, he won't assist per request. Plus the staff member we got was pretty funny and made the experience that much better. This game is extremely well thought-out. I was truly amazed how all the pieces and clues fit together. Someone thought long and hard about this. Thankfully we had a couple analytical minds on a crew that helped knock out some riddles. I personally just did a great job of unlocking the locks with the keys other people found :P The game typically is for a group of 12, we had 6 and got SO CLOSE but unfortunately, ran out of time before winning the game. By the end of it, my toddler asked the staff if we could "please have more time"! After the game, if you win you get to take a group picture with "winner" signs. If you lose well.... you take a picture with loser signs. LOL Being overly critical, I wish they would have a better camera for more flattering photos :P Seriously, everyone in SETX should experience this, at the very least, once in their life! Such a unique and fun way to spend your time. Talk about a wonderful team-building exercise. Highly highly recommend. Please, go support this local business so we can keep this amazing activity in our area!

The good news is that I know pretty much every one of our department leaders. So even though I didn't get to work with my husband or sister, I did end up with three other family members, our pastor, his mom, my bestie, and another friend. We all worked really well together and we made it out with not much time to spare. We had a few setbacks because one of the puzzles got messed up causing us to have to use a hint and also setting us back a little bit. Doesn't matter, we made it! We did the neon/black light room. It was fun... dark, of course, but very fun! There were two rooms involved so when you finished one, you had to do the other in order to escape. My husband's group did the stranger things themed room and I don't know anything about it because we can't share secrets of course (in case we go back and switch rooms) but I do know there were three rooms involved in theirs, and there was a demigorgon in one room. He said it was fun. We had a pretty large group so having 7 people in one group and 8 in the other might seem like too much, but it wasn't bad. I will say that the room we did could've been done with less people, but there weren't too many of us so it was fine. (I was in the group of 7.) Our guide was very friendly and helpful. He was knowledgeable and explained everything we needed to know ahead of time. I never knew this place was here. It's literally right across the Hwy from our church. I'm glad I know about it now because I would definitely come back here again, and I'm hoping we do something else like this in the future. I love escape rooms.

Before heading in, be prepared to lock up your phones in the provided lockers. What happens in those rooms stays in those rooms! Our group did the Titanic room, and the adventure did not disappoint. Every little detail matters, seriously, the smallest clues make the biggest difference. And anytime we hit a wall, hints were available to keep us moving without spoiling the fun. Im happy to report we made it onto the lifeboat with our life jackets on . Azi was a fantastic host, friendly, clear with the rules, and congratulated us when we escaped. The business was open, but we waited and waited for someone to come assist us. When it came to the day of, the employees were nice and helpful, but the axe throwing is a bust. The plywood used is so hard that the axes bounce right off. There is an axe throwing business in kingwood that uses more porous wood (and will wet it a bit) so your axes actually go into the wood when you throw them! This plywood left us all feeling unsuccessful after an hour. They have a good music system and digital backgrounds for throwing. They have good drink selection but no food on the premises, so bring your own food. I have heard their escape rooms are better than axe throwing, as they need to update the wood used.

While it was great to see some familiar faces, it was even better to meet some new faces. We joined forces as team "Strawberry Scarlett" and never looked back! It was almost as if we knew each for the longest of times and we all had just met tonight. If anyone is looking for team building, I'd definitely recommend this place. You work together as a team and come up with answers to questions that you think you have it all together, news flash, who did y'all poll for some of these answers. Lol. It's all good because Strawberry Scarlett stayed on top till the very end. Yes there is some salt in that statement. It was a fantastic event overall. I am thinking the manager was having a little bit of scare towards the beginning and during team assignments (hence not 5 stars). I get it, it's overwhelming expecting so many people. Hopefully in the end she was able to relax because everything was great. KEKE and Savannah (I hope I have her bae right) made up for some of that experience. They kept us hype during game time Saint Arnold was there along with J. Lohr wines and whithaven for our libations. But let's pause and talk about that Knead Me Bakery lemon scone. I love any and everything lemon and they had it right on spot. We also were served some Chuys, tap the mic, jalapeño dip. Yum. Along with Zalat Pizza. Thank you Ms. Britt. Great idea as always. And you blew it out the park showcasing multiple businesses just a short walk away. You're the best! Job well done for sure.
