The staff are friendly and the constant presence of lifeguards make me feel safe. The pool is clean although I've seen the occasional bandaid at the bottom. There's a constant flow of swimmers who take advantage of the lane swim times. There's a dive tank and a hot tub too. The gym is small but has what you need for a productive workout. I like building up a sweat and cooling down in the pool after. The change rooms could be cleaner but that's understandable because it's so busy. Just don't look at the floor. The lockers require quarters but some lockers are free for you to use your own lock. The rates are SO CHEAP compared to Vivo and YMCA. I bought a 30x pass that never expires for $170. That comes to just under $6/entry compared to $14 drop in at the aforementioned facilities. Drop in rates and 10x passes are also City of Calgary's website along with their pool schedules. If you're not close to Thornhill, other City of Calgary facilities are dotted around the city that offer the same rates.

I've been here in the daytime and also the evening and the attendance is quite varied. Some days it is very busy and others it's very quiet. The facility is a little bit older and not as well maintained as the other city pools. The centre does have a good sized weight room. The big disappointment is the change room facilities. They have a dark dingy feel to them. Water pools around the built in tiles benches, making you want to avoid the puddles. Now they do make the effort to clean them at the end of the night, but they could wait until the patrons have left so that they don't have to walk barefoot over cleaning solution on the floor.

Once you experience Escape Hour, you can really see what sets them apart from the rest. This place strives to give you more than just a bunch of puzzles and a room you are locked into for an hour. Here you get the full experience, as they really push the thematic nature of each room. Everything from the decor and story, right down to the period specific, functional antiques that you must use to complete some of the puzzles. Another thing that sets them apart (and the biggest part in my opinion) is that none of the rooms are linear, you can start on any puzzle you choose and end anywhere you choose. You don't need to find the "first" puzzle which gives you the answer to the second puzzle and so on. If you get stuck on any of the puzzles, there is no break in the experience where you push a cheat button to get someone to come in and show you how to do it, instead they coach you through any difficult parts giving you just enough help to complete it without giving it away. Now this is not just one person sitting back reading a book waiting for a button in any room to be pushed. There is a dedicated host to each group that can see and hear everything going on in the rooms and communicate hints and tips through a TV screen in the room. This way they can give you help or hinder your progress, thus tailoring the difficulty to your group. They will not give too much help and spoil your experience, but they also won't leave you frustrated if you can't pass a challenge. One thing I should point out is that this is by appointment. You must book a room. However, they will accommodate pretty much any time 24 hours a day. We finished up just prior to a group coming in at 2am for a work party that deals with the graveyard shift. Yes, they cater to individuals, and corporate office parties alike. I'd like to say a bunch more, but it would give too much away. Needless to say, GO CHECK THEM OUT!

Most escape rooms will make things harder by making you work in the dark with a flashlight. Most escape rooms will give you a buzzer or button to call in an attendant to help you if you get stuck. You won't find any of that cheap, time-stealing nonsense here. You want it harder? Escape Hour gives you more challenging puzzles and more of them. You want help? There's a dedicated staff member watching and listening in and if you need help they will put hints on a tv display in the room for you to use (or ignore as we did most of the time) rather than coming into the room, disrupting your experience and not knowing what stage you're at before they help you. This means you don't lose time, you get immersed in the experience, and the best part? They will never give you the answer, just hints to help you figure it out for yourself. They have four rooms that rotate in theme and when we went, and will be for a few months still: -The Lost Jewel of Zanzibar (african safari) -The Curse of the Evil Genie (arabian nights) -Prohibition - the Lucky Duck (speakeasy) -Cypherspace (interstellar) I did the Zanzibar one. The rooms are amazing, with authentic antiques and period items fitting each theme. They are all based on true stories, and are so much fun that you can't help but dive into it. When we went into our room the door closed and we just scattered. It was so much fun, I can't wait to do the other three themes! The puzzles and setup is great for all ages and experience levels. With the different themes and difficulty levels, Escape Hour rooms are great for families, professional groups, or just having fun for an hour. For context, this is the second time me and my partner have been to the store. We decided to ignore it, and went again about a month later. We were looking for materials to make monster hunter leather armor. We had found the perfect leather, and were told to put it aside until we were finished shopping by another employee. It was left on a side table at the back, after being explicitly told that we had access to it. We came back after half an hour of shopping, and the same employee who set it aside was selling it to another person. When confronted, both employees doubled down and told us that we were wrong, and that they were going to sell it to another customer. We repeated what they had told us originally, but they kept insisting that we had not communicated at all. The other customer also became upset and left without buying any leather due to their behaviour. One of them proceeded to tell me "Ninety Six dollars" per square meter, when they had said eight dollars to the other customer. When we went to pay, we explained to the employee our concerns, and why we ended up not buying anything. He again became very argumentative, calling us liars, and then simply refusing to engage in any conversation, however helpful or constructive it may have been. Overall, I would never recommend this store, which is unfortunate due to their wide variety of fabrics.

Then head down to Beat It; if you are an avid percussionist then you will absolutely salivate when you enter this store. It's all about drums and cymbals and things that go bang in the night. The owner Bob is tremendous, he and a former band mate were there shooting the breeze; seems like they had a travelling band and comedy act in their day and are in the process of uploading some YouTube videos of the music as we spoke. Dave actually showed me the bass guitar he used when touring which is the style that Paul McCartney had except right handed. The place is lined with amazing drum kits, nice affordable beginner models and then they go up to the all collectible drum sets, they even have a drum kit that is the exact replica of Ringo Star's. What absolutely floored me are the drum kits from the turn of the century that line the upper back wall behind the cash register. Here you will see the golden oldies, drums hand painted oozing with nostalgia and a faint beat. Bob has a small selection of collectable music for sale plus some collectable radios that date back to the 50s. Bob certainly knows his stuff, and was so interesting to talk to I just wanted to stay in the store all day and hang out, but alas I had things to do so I had to BEAT IT. Well... I turns out that it's a drum store, so get your mind out of the gutter! And then get into the store because it's lots of fun. If you're into vintage drum gear, this is the place to go. One-off, interesting used gear excites me way more than run-of-the-mill new stuff. Walking around Beat It is like walking around a musician's toy store and a museum at the same time. I decided to impulse buy a retro drum throne at a good price. I will always take a high quality piece of gear in used condition to a lower quality new piece at the same price. In the world of music gear, scratches just add character. The owner is a real friendly guy who you can't help but want to support. There aren't to many mom and pop music shops around and Beat It is (as far as I know) the only drum specific music store standing in the whole city. This alone is enough for me to want to support these guys.
