I went from pink hair, to neon green hair, to silver hair, with no hiccups at all! Not Curly Hair Friendly/Price Differed from Quoted Price I went to Color Haven two weeks ago and had my hair highlighted by Rina, the owner and sole stylist there. The price she charged me for my crown highlights differed by almost $40 from the price she told me two weeks earlier when I went in for a price quote. When I asked about the difference, she flared and said I'd used her electricity drying my hair. She had earlier said: "most of my curly clients leave with their hair wet." Unfortunately, I cannot do that in the winter plus I wanted her to see the highlights when they were dry. My hair did take a little over an hour to dry but I did it myself with her heat lamp and blow dryer, using my own styling products. Unfortunately, she does not have a bonnet dryer which is what really speeds up curly hair drying time. We had even previously discussed how long my hair took and she scheduled me early in the day so she could do other customers while I tended to it myself. I also cleaned the floor of hair when I was done. To say that I felt bad afterwards is an understatement and we did not even discuss how my highlights turned out. I sometimes do freelance work and the price I quote a client is the price I charge them. If I want to change the price, I will do it the next time we work together and explain why in advance. And I certainly don't flare in anger at a customer who asks politely about the change in price. read more

How I love thee, let me count the ways. Anthony is such a fantastic colorist, and takes so much time explaining the science behind the coloring process, how to achieve the results you want, and maintain them. He even offered to show me how to do my roots myself at home in between visits - when does that ever happen? I have never had so many compliments on my color, and I have never left a salon loving my hair as much as I did after my first visit to Color Haven. Yes, they are expensive, but like a tattoo - you get what you pay for. Color Haven is a truly lovely salon, and Anthony is straight up amazing. I've been getting my hair colored in Manhattan for the past 12 years by the same guy -- highlights, lowlights, single processes, and everything in between. He was great with color, but it was a very rushed, in-and-out experience. Not that I needed crazy pampering, but it made it harder to convince myself to schlep to Manhattan to get my color done. I found Color Haven on Yelp when, on a random Saturday, I woke up and impulsively decided that I wanted to get rid of all of my highlights and go dark. My friends thought I was kind of crazy doing this with a colorist I hadn't been to yet, and who I'd found off of Yelp. It could have been a disaster, I suppose. But seriously, Anthony is the best. The salon is quaint (between Atlantic & Pacific, btw-- not Atlantic & State), and I was the only client in there. Anthony took his time to talk to me about what I was thinking. We talked through my options, my questions, and concerns. I was worried that my blonde highlights would go reddish if I went dark-- he explained that his semi-permanent color wouldn't oxidize the way permanent does, and that this wouldn't be a problem. He was right. This guy knows his stuff when it comes to color. What was really nice, I thought, was his straight-up transparency with his rates. Before getting started, he told me what he would charge-- totally reasonable, especially compared to dreadful Manhattan prices-- and made sure I was comfortable with that before we proceeded. Once we agreed on the color and he started applying it, then we just gabbed for the rest of the time (Orange is the New Black, all the Oscar nominations, Brooklyn and its many changing neighborhoods). Anthony is the best colorist I have found since moving to NYC. He totally fixed my hair after it had been trashed by another stylist who had sold me on what an expert she was on color! I go from brunette to honey blonde every few years, but my latest changeover was a disaster! I came to Anthony quite upset with bleached out/orangey hair, and he has managed to transform it into a gorgeous dark honey gold. Which is all I wanted in the first place! I also appreciate that they are very reasonably priced, and have never tried to sell me any expensive hair products, which ALWAYS happens. Anthony colored my hair, and did a good job covering the roots, and matching my naturally light brown color. What bothered me- as two other reviews mention- was how unclear the pricing was, and how much I ended up paying. They charged me for a single process, a toner (to blend the brown color applied to the roots to the rest of the hair, which always was included at other salons). Blow-drying was also extra (which I found out after)! It came to $140 plus tip! That is more expensive than the fanciest salons in Manhattan where I got the same stuff done. Color Haven: please be more transparent with your prices! Btw: Anthony responded to this, but I am not Shira (and do not have thick curly hair, nor did I get an ammoniac-free treatment, as far as I know). read more

After spending years at Manhattan salons, I stepped in to this neighborhood place about 5 months ago and boy am I happy I did. Rina, the owner, is one of the nicest, kindest service people I've met ever. She does a monthly single process for me and is constantly accommodating my crazy schedule -- always with a smile. She has great style and I always leave with a terrific blow out (definitely go for the blow out!), waves, etc. Today she did "tips" for my daughter and was so kind throughout the process and the results are unbelievable. I hesitated updating my review and potentially hurting someone's business, but after giving myself a few weeks to think it over, I decided I should share my second experience. Since writing my review, I've been back to Color Haven twice. A few weeks after my first visit, I came back for a bang trim with Annie, which is complimentary if you've gotten your hair cut and styled there. The bang trim was good, Annie was nice as ever, everything was totally a-ok. Probably about around a month or several weeks after my bang trim, I scheduled an appointment to get my hair colored. I wanted something more "fall" for the changing seasons and something more strawberry. Though most the hair colors I brought pictures of were definitely very red, I was sort of leaning towards a clearly edited photo of a woman whose hair was blonde with a very strawberry hue, though Anthony suggested I don't go that route since the color would fade very quickly. It made sense, so I went with red-red. Though I progressively grew to actively dislike the color after a few days, I will not blame that on him. What I am very upset with is that when I was about to get out my wallet to pay, Anthony somewhat awkwardly told me that the price I paid at my first visit was much lower than it should have been, and that they had wanted to call me and let me know the real price after writing my first review, but wasn't really sure how to tell me without it being awkward, and then proceeded to charge me $150 for my all-over color--50% more than I had paid the first time (100). They COULD have told me the price when I scheduled my appointment over the phone, when I had been in to get my bangs cut, or when I had walked in to the salon that day...all better options than telling me after I had procured a service that it was substantially more than I had paid the first time. To make matters worse, it was acknowledged by Anthony that he SHOULD have told me but didn't know when/what to say before, which suggests that he knew what he was doing was wrong. I understand if he undercharged or mischarged me before, or if he decided to raise his prices, but it isn't fair business to do that and not let a repeat client know before she gets another service. Just as he has the right to charge what he wants, I have the right to choose a place that is within my college-student budget, and I felt that when I was told upon paying that it was going to be so much more than I thought, I was robbed of that right to choose what I can afford. Sadly, I won't be back. (Also, the semi-permanent color faded unevenly within just a two weeks, and I can't justify paying 150 dollars for color that will just wash out). What a great find! Came here on a whim after seeing the reviews and I am sooo happy I did. My hair is naturally dark brown taken up to blonde for the past few years and the past 2 salons I've been to have butchered my roots growth (blonde color didn't match, too streaky of highlights etc) I was looking to tone it down to a brown to blonde ombré so I scheduled an appt with Anthony. Anthony is a color wizard. I've been going to him, and only him, since 2007. And despite the fact that I live in LA, my trips to NY always include him. Anthony not only knows how to color and treat hair, but his expertise allows him to tell you what type of coloring will work with your texture. As a Latina with thick, curly hair, he knows what products work best in my hair; while also making me look my very best. Aside from his genius knowledge about coloring, he is a true gem. Anthony is professional and personable...and anybody that meets him, automatically loves him. I booked my appointment with Simone and came into a very pretty, very comfortable salon that is conveniently located on Clinton and Atlantic. Simone was friendly, and very patient and really spent the time to understand what I wanted. The single process was lovely! A warm shade of blond that perfectly matched my highlights and my skin tone. I'm a seriously happy camper. Since it was my first visit, they offered me a free blowout, which was a nice touch. This review is my experience from months ago, after having gone to someone else for color 3 months back I noticed how much cheaper and nicer another colorist did my hair compared to this salon. I came in here wanting some ombre with some balayage or highlights to blend we'll with the ombre. Anthony did not listen to anything I had said and just did the "ombre" that was so subtle that you barely noticed it and I paid 300$ for it( I was naive then) Now he is a very nice guy n I did like it at first but when I came to realize it I paid 300$ for something no one can even notice and also the front my hair was way too light of a blonde than the rest of my "ombre" it almost looked white! I was mortified everyone I knew thought it looked like white hairs. nicely I came back and told him I had wanted him to add some more color and blend the front of my hair and tone down the white blonde he'd put on. nicely enough he did it for free but I walked out looking the same way I left the first time I didn't wanna say anything so I just said my thanks and walked out. This is months later I'm writing this after going to an awesome colorist and she did my color amazing!! Great blonde ombre with some highlights and it was twice as cheaper than some subtle strips on my hair. I will never come to hipsterville in Brooklyn to do anything on my hair. Please do not let Rina come near you with scissors! I live near this color shop and needed a bang trim. She is the only person there who cuts hair so I gave her a try. She said she was afraid to make them too short. I said "Please don't!...I have wavy hair so please go slowly and leave them touching my brows." In four snips she cut straight across and left me with bangs that are literally 1" above my eyebrows. (I just measured.) I now have "1st grade picture", bowl-style bangs. I did not want to write a bad review but really felt that I had no choice but to warn my neighbors. read more
