We also got to check out the gift shop for the first time and they had so many toys, Knick knacks, puzzles, and other games for kids and families. I gave in and let my kid choose a toy which he had plenty of but because they were different poses I allowed one. The touch tank is still available and they host them at specific times. They also have their two smaller exhibits open which is still fun to explore. We also saw other shows they have such as puppet shows and movies! Depending on the day, they might show different things. They also have their staff come out to present hatchlings of grunions and other sea life presentations. Very cool place, free admission, parking is only $1/hour, and they appreciate any amount of donations you can help with!

The exploration center (which has puzzles and books for the little ones to enjoy) and the nursery are still open (you can still see jellyfish, shrimps/prawns, abalone among other things, we even got to see a jellyfish feeding while we were there!). We plan to come back when the exhibit hall reopens and I hope they still have the Tidepool Touch Tank in the back I loved so much as a child. There's also other free activities for the kids to enjoy like the puppet show and the shark touch tank (super cool), and my son got to touch a shark! This is such a cute and humble little aquarium. It's free admission, but they greatly appreciate donations. Much has stayed the same and much has also changed since I was here as a child. You do have to pay for parking, $1 per hour which is really reasonable. There's a nice quiet beach to enjoy out front. There's a small Offset Coffee bar attached to the aquarium now as well. And there's a little gift shop with lots of educational toys and books. In a world where more and more kids (and adults) doom scroll and become addicted to social media, I really appreciate places like this that are free and still available to the public. It's really impressive how much they still offer and how many cool things you can see and still learn about despite the lack of admission fees. I will keep happily supporting them and we definitely need to preserve and have more spaces like this, as they are becoming more and more rare in the digital age. It's nice to make the trek out here, get off our screens and touch some grass (or sharks rather!). And maybe I'm biased, but I love this place more than the Long Beach Aquarium! (Monterey Bay aquarium is probably truly the best aquarium in California though!) Will definitely come back again and again.

Some tips: 1) check out the show schedule, the Wings of the Pacific show is a must-watch, and there's usually only one a day. the pacific visions theater is great and the birds are amazing! the seal/sea lion and otter shows are also great 2) if you want to feed the lorakeets nectar ($5), i recommend doing it as early as possible. they break from 12-1, and while the lorakeet forest is open until 6, they evidently sell out most weekend days by 3. my only critique of the aquarium all day is i wish they made this clearer. we weren't able to buy nectar at 11:45, avoided a long line at 2, and came back around 5 to learn there was no more nectar to be sold. bummer! 3) if you want a good spot for the animal or dive shows, get there early. we got to the sea lion show as it started and they had roped off the sitting area (you can still watch from the next level or the cafe) 4) if you need a break from the crowds the short films are well-produced and the theater is comfortable, though it can be hard to hear the narration 5) you can get readmission with a stamp, so if the crowds are getting to you grab lunch or a carousel ride across the street and come back a bit later! also don't forget to get your parking ticket validated, it's $8 for the day with that.

It was my first time visiting as an adult and it was a bit of a rough experience. I came with my…read moremom on a Friday morning a week before the annual Acura Grand Prix--evident by tall barriers set up between the parking lot and the aquarium itself. Despite their interposing placement, they didn't present any obstacle to us whatsoever. We did, however, end up spending less than 30 minutes exploring the aquarium, costing about $89 for the two of us. This was also less time than what was spent trying to find parking within the nearby structure. We ended up settling with the top level and the lone option of taking the stairs, due to the elevators being out of service. The top level is fortunately shaded and the staircase is wide for larger groups to comfortably pass. However, it was an unfortunate inconvenience for stroller users or individuals with mobility issues, like my mom. You also can validate your parking at the aquarium's exit and expect to pay $3 for less than an hour. In my opinion, the tickets were expensive for the experience, being $44 for each of us, and the box office attendants were a bit curt when we asked about discounts. The aquarium is non-profit and it might've been a long day for their workers, so we thought it fine. But these two things also didn't make the visit any better for us. Once inside, it was crowded with a variety of groups. The experience of walking along the floor level and outdoors was a bit of a daze, with the busyness encouraging you to be in constant, aimless motion. Although, the upper floor did have a naturally better flow, maybe by the placement of caricature artists and more places to sit and observe for longer. We stayed the longest with the Sea Otters, before eventually moving on for other families to have a view. When we finished walking through the entire aquarium, however, we couldn't ignore how brief our time was and the disinterest to stay longer. We didn't hate our visit, but were disheartened by the experience. We likely came on the wrong day for us, but are also unlikely to revisit anytime soon :(

I strongly recommend this place for all your reef keeping needs. (Freshwater too!) If interested heres a little story... If not, just take my word for it and shop here. - This week I decided to relocated my reef tank for a better view in the house... biggest mistake ever! Everything that could've gone wrong, went wrong. I underestimated the weight of the tank thinking I could just get by with 90% of the water drained and removal of the sump and equipment, I was definitely wrong! I ended up pulling out everything, but the sand. Every coral, every invert, every fish... yes including 4 wrasses and a goby that all like to hide in the sand bed, I mean EVERYTHING! I then accidentally broke my rock structure into several pieces in the process of lifting them out of the tank and putting them into bins. Trying not to lose too much temp, I moved as fast as I could and used as many spare heaters as possible. It was a total disaster! After glueing back all the rock work that broke into pieces and moving everything back into the tank, I was unsure of how my fishes and corals would react to this sudden change in temp, biology and chemistry. 4 hours later, I finally got the tank running again (in it's new location,) I then noticed a huge bacterial bloom, Im guessing from the stirring of the sand bed. I then decided to do a water change to see if it would help. To add to my streak of badluck, I had no saltwater prepped. I quickly rushed to Age of Aquariums to get saltwater. That's where I was greeted by Isaac. He knew something was wrong. All I said was "I decided to move my tank" he already knew where I was going. I told him my problems and concerns and hesitancy to move my livestock back into the tank. He recommended several products to me, answered a bunch of questions I had and gave me solid advice. He also allowed me to borrow several containers for saltwater as long as i promised to bring them back. I am truly grateful. 2 days later, my tank is bouncing back. I had 0 losses. Fishes are happy and corals are all starting to open up again. Im leaving this review to share my experience with those new to the hobby, getting into the hobby and those who have been in the hobby for a long time. You can always get cheaper products elsewhere, especially online... but, you will never get the support of a local fish store. Support you LFS, like they support us.

They also clearly know what they're doing. The staff is knowledgeable and can answer questions without giving you that blank stare you sometimes get at other aquarium shops. But the pricing is honestly kind of shocking. A lot of their equipment is outrageously overpriced compared to what you can find online or even at other local stores. For example, I saw a UNS double valve connector selling for about $60 when the same thing is easily available online for around $20. They also had the Kessil 35° reflector priced at $50, and I've never seen those go for more than $30 or $35 anywhere else. I get that local fish stores have overhead and can't always compete with online pricing, and I'm totally fine paying a little more to support a brick and mortar shop. But some of these markups feel excessive. If you need something immediately and don't mind paying a premium, it's a solid store with good selection and knowledgeable staff. Just be prepared for some pretty steep prices on certain items. Overall I'd say it's worth visiting, but definitely price check before buying equipment.
