At first it didn't look like much, just an old cruddy pub in the suburbs (though a pretty fancy suburb), however when I stepped out the back into the beer garden the atmosphere did pick up somewhat. Then again, a decent beer garden always adds something to a pub, and this one was no exception. They also had some pretty nice craft beers on tap as well, which also added to the charm of the place.

Depending upon your age group, the Hillside Hotel can be heaven or hell…read more After a recent visit on a Saturday night, we discovered two things: we were no longer 18 (the place was packed with young adults and the noise was ferocious) and the name change - it used to be the Hillside Tavern. It appeared to be a big hit with the younger crowd, there was a line to get in at the back near the carpark, I don't know what the front was like. I could say I long for the time it was the tavern, nice and quiet and plenty of room. It's current metamorphisis into a hot spot seems to be working and I haven't seen any reports in the local paper saying that there has been trouble.

The Chips were really good, probably why the portion is so big in hopes that you will fill up on them and you won't complain about a poorly portioned meal. I wouldn't eat or try that again. I don't like leaving bad reviews but I'm afraid this just wasn't good.

There's a fair choice of boutique beers on tap and nice little wine list too. I've been lucky enough to get a cosy table next to the roaring fire with the rugby on the big screen. There are multiple televisions around the dining room so plenty of games to choose from. There are sooo many tables that fill this pub. However, the pub does fill quickly on a Saturday night. Family friendly the pub is filled with friendly happy locals. In terms of food the pizzas and burgers are good. The pulled pork burger is popular. I like the vegetarian burger as a lighter choice and the fish and chips are also good! Lots of good choices and daily specials. I wouldn't make a special outing to go here but definitely choose it above other pubs in the area. Four stars from me ****
