This is one of those pubs that are good, but not really all that great. In a way, it probably had a lot to do with the rather disinterested service that I received. However, it was still rather nice, with the beer garden out the front, and the decent options with regards to the beers on tap. This is going to be a great review. Trust me! I am from US. I made a reservation here to stay 14 days. When I got here, we discovered a number of things: 1) it is a pub/hotel , which meant that it is not a hotel proper. The rooms to rent are above the hotel and that is 40 steps and no lift to the rooms. Being 71 and my wife 62 with bad knees, this was an impossibility. You may think, " What so great about this review? " It is the owners. When we got there, we discovered our credit cards were not working (forgot to notify our bank before leaving) The young women helping us was trying to give us all kinds of solutions, but nothing was working. I, finally, got the cards working, but by then, the owner showed up and told us that we didn't want to stay there, telling us the story of the pub/hotel and the 40 steps. Then he sat down and started helping us find another hotel, then eliminating the current reservation. Afterward, we sat down had lunch, some of the best fish and chips we have ever eaten. I ordered a beer, which he comped me. Seriously!! We will be doing a miniature show across the street this weekend and I will be having more of those delicious fish and chips (and beer which I will pay for) These people are awesome!! read more

Oh noes! They've gone and done it again, and this time it's busted. Blue Gum have managed to do a denovation, which leads to the next official step of demolition. What's disappeared? 1. Any form of Atmosphere The changes have removed any skerrick of character from a previously character-filled pub. It is a sterile, generic version of itself - and the lack of patrons is indicative of the change. 2. Decent priced beer $6.40 for a schooner of New in an atmosphere-less pub in Hornsby feels akin to a slap in the face with a hornets nest. 3. Group Toilets in Main Bar (adjacent to pool table) Gone are the days of having a 10-man trough and a cubicle in the Gents. Now there is a single lockable door which can be used for cubicle or trough purposes 1-person-at-a-time. I can only imagine the ladies have a similar 1-person-at-a-time approach. The reasoning behind this? They've created another entry point into the pub from Unwin Road. My recommendation is to use the new access as an exit point to get the F out of D! There are umpteen better alternatives with atmosphere, decently priced beer, and multiple toilet facilities within short walking or train-stop distance. read more

The Blue Gum Hotel is great for reunions, family lunches and gatherings with friends. They host a number of events such as Melbourne Cup Day and their flat screen televisions showcase the rugby and cricket. Other entertainment features include trivia, members night and special deals. Patrons can choose to cook their own steak on one of the available BBQ's or have one of the chefs cook it for them. It's quite a novelty cooking your own steak with friends surrounding the hot plate. The food is efficiently prepared and cooked well. A buzzer beeper alerts you to when your food is ready- you simply pick it up from the kitchen. Drinks are also self serve. Customers can choose to sit indoors or outdoors. Outdoor heaters populate the pub, making the rooms warm and welcoming. read more

The Blue Gum Hotel is a fun place to enjoy a beer at after work, hangout with friends, or to catch a game. Great drinks and upscale bar food are the staples and the burger is definitely one of the more popular items. The Blue Gum Burger features a Wagyu patty, lettuce, cheddar, charred chorizo, BBQ marmalade, and aioli. The Wagyu beef and fantastic bun give a tenderness to each bite that really lets the juicy beef flavor stand out. The chorizo and the rest of the ingredients work well, but are almost too salty/tangy. They leave the burger missing that something special to bring everything together. There is only one bar I would frequent in Hornsby. The Blue Gum Hotel is it. Like many bars it is split into many areas, but unlike many bars, the restaurant here is awesome. They used to have a DIY BBQ where you could char grill a bit of meat to your heart's content, but these days you'll find that done, and done well, by the kitchen. It is funny that this place think steaks and pizza are modern Australian but.... whatevs.... what they have tastes good. Best part of heading to this pub is going on a rugby (union) night, especially if you are a warratahs or wallabies supporter... :-) read more

Ate here at lunch with a party of 5. I had the lamb cutlet special and it was fantastic. We sat at a quiet table in the well presented bar. Lots of great drink selections and very attentive, kind service. This is fantastic local pub. read more

Good food and nice atmosphere, but expensive for a pub bistro! Prices ain't that cheap for outer suburban Sydney! Wednesday night trivia is good. Seems to get a lot of family reunions/family dinners here, particularly on weekends. Also old school mates from the surrounding private schools in the area seem to like to meet here. Incidentally, I've spent a fair bit of time in Waitara lately. The Blue Gum Hotel has been my new go to when I needed a quick wholesome feed - early 5pm dinner or late snack. There's a fair choice of boutique beers on tap and nice little wine list too. I've been lucky enough to get a cosy table next to the roaring fire with the rugby on the big screen. There are multiple televisions around the dining room so plenty of games to choose from. There are sooo many tables that fill this pub. However, the pub does fill quickly on a Saturday night. Family friendly the pub is filled with friendly happy locals. In terms of food the pizzas and burgers are good. The pulled pork burger is popular. I like the vegetarian burger as a lighter choice and the fish and chips are also good! Lots of good choices and daily specials. I wouldn't make a special outing to go here but definitely choose it above other pubs in the area. Four stars from me **** read more

The Blue Gum is a great local family pub, and for me, offers some of the best pub food in the area. The dining area is large with an almost country feel to it - Wooden highlights and an enormous fire which is great in winter. The bar area is on the other side, which usually hosts a few punters and the occasional young crowd on a friday night. I had a 17 dollar BGH Burger here and it was the biggest thing I have ever seen. Great bang for your buck. If you want to step it up to the steaks, they start from $26 - $35. Or you can cook it your self on the large Barbie located in the heart of the dining room. A great place to scope out the talent. Blue Gum has recently introduced a new craft beer menu which has the almighty Stone Wood on Tap. Get into it! read more

They deserve every star they get. What a great pub bistro / restaurant. Cook you're own at the grill or have the chefs do it for a few bucks more. Absolutely first class food every single time. The steaks and burgers steel the show - best steaks this side of the bridge and very reasonably priced considering they get best cuts. Give it a try - you will not be disappointed read more
