Colonial Gables is absolutely delightful. My wife and I stayed here for a week in early June of 2022. Our flight from San Diego to Portland arrived very late, and after a two hour drive to Belfast, we didn't arrive here until well after 1:00 am. They were very accommodating and left us an envelope with our cottage information and a key. Nice folks! Our cottage (#26) was wonderful. Everything about the cottages are newly renovated inside and out with all modern materials and amenities. They're super clean and maintain a rustic charm. Their property extends all the way to the water, and the view is extraordinary to say the least. I tell my friends that if it weren't for modern vehicles parked at each cottage, we felt as though we had gone back 50-60 years in time. This place is located just a couple of minutes from downtown Belfast. And, we discovered that Belfast is a great location for touring the beautiful coastal communities north and south. Oh, I have to mention, just down the road is "Youngs" lobster pound. It's authentic, the menu is very very simple with no frills. But man is it good! Zero disappointment with this place... The cottages are all in terrible condition. Yes they have been updated but it looks like it's been done by an inexperienced DIYer. I have stayed in nicer camping cabins. These cabins are in dire need if repair. You can throw a fresh coat of paint on a turd it doesn't change anything it's still a turd. These cabins should be 50$-70$ a night for the condition they are in I paid almost 200$. I stayed in 3 different motels while in Maine this was most expensive and the most run down a total disappointment. read more

I love staying here. Whether it's just me and my partner, or whether we bring the dog or the (pretty much grown) kids, we love the gardens and the cottages and the small beachfront. We have to come through Belfast regularly and I find that even one night here puts me in a great mood. Clean as a whistle. The first time you stay acclimate yourself, get a map of the place, and your second time you can reserve the cottage of your choice. By the way, we have only stayed in cottages not the regular rooms and please remember to leash and clean up after your dog. Seems like all the guests do that but just in case -- don't ruin it for the rest of us. read more

The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The cottages were well-appointed and clean. Some of the furnishings need a bit of an update, but that's not a huge criteria to keep us from returning. If we are ever in the area again, we will definitely stay here. I'm kind of a fan! Haha! This place is a great option in the mid-coast area. Affordably-priced, clean, easy to find, friendly, and cute rooms! We've stayed here twice now - once was planned, the other was last minute. The rooms here are cute and the location is convenient if you are spending a few days in Belfast or the surrounding areas. You're close to the main parts of Belfast where most of the dining & entertainment are but you're also near the roads leading to Unity/interior towns or north to the state parks and beach areas. The time we stayed here unplanned was a time when we were planning on driving up to Bar Harbor from York one evening. Unfortunately we got a late start and ended up just getting too tired to keep driving. Somewhere before Camden we were getting too sleepy and decided it would be better (and safer) if we stopped somewhere for the night. We called Colonial Gables and luckily they had room! The ladies were super accommodating and did not make a fuss about both our last minute reservation and our late arrival (sometime after 11:30 pm)! In fact, they were actually concerned and wanted to stay up to make sure we got in okay. Very sweet! And totally appreciated! The rooms are very cute and each one we've been in seemed to have their own personalities in decor. Its very charming! This isn't the most fancy place to stay but it does a good job with what its got and with a good attitude! The proprietors seem to do a good job with their maintenance. These aren't new buildings and they haven't been completely renovated in some time but someone is doing a good job keeping things in functioning and clean order. I would recommend this if you are trying to keep your costs low but not looking to sacrifice cleanliness or functionality. I've definitely added this place to my go-to list for accommodations in the area. The website does NOT do it justice. We pulled in were amazed by the breathtaking view, every single cottage or room has an amazing sea view. We stayed in a cottage which was amazing! It was so cozy, updated, extremely clean, well stocked, and not a single bad view from any window. The best part is they are pet friendly and did not have carpets which made for easy clean up of accidents. There are public BBQ grilles, adult swings near the beach, a fire pit with benches near the ocean, corn hole and shuffle board. We will definitely be back!!! Oh and the staff were very quick to get us checked in, super friendly and extremely helpful and were happy to give local recommendations when we asked. Could not have asked for a better vacation. 4.5 stars We loved cabin 14, a newly renovated cabin with full views of Penobscot Bay. It is a very relaxing place with a great vibe. There is a fire pit with wood set out at the side for an evening of beach fires and star gazing. The staff here really went out of their way, in a relaxxxxxing Maine paaaace to make us comfortable. Wish there were cottage grills or a main property grill to cook out. People brought little hibachi grills and our neighbor kindly loaned theirs to us. Loved the decor and charming cottage feel. We would definitely return if we ever make it back that way again. Some autumn perhaps? read more

This was the most wonderful get away! We've been staying in various hotels for a week now the cottage on the bay was my favorite. I would recommend the colonial Gables to anyone seeking a unique experience. Peaceful, wonderful staff and beautiful beach. The cottage we stayed in was right on the beach we were able to walk around and do a little bit of beachcombing. Our room was very clean and comfortable. I did have to do some work while we were here and was happy that the internet was available with a strong signal. Great time highly recommend! read more

We stayed in the motel. It was incredibly clean, bright, and comfortable. Bathroom was super clean! Deck view was beautiful even with overcast weather. We had traveled a lot and went to bed early. While you could hear some sound if people went in or out main room doors, there was no sound from people using bathrooms or watching tv. It was private and quiet. We will definitely return and plan to stay in a cabin since it'll be a week. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Plenty of space with a small table and two chairs. read more

Stayed here for a weekend wedding and what a beautiful place to stay. We stayed in the hotel portion of Colonial Gables. We came in late and the person working the desk was very nice when we called to let them know we would be late to check in. They have a great system for those who are coming in after that time. The rooms are really clean and the bathtub is a soak tub. A bonus is the patio that each room gets overlooking the cabin and the shore. You can walk down to the beach and there is a little playground, some seating and a fire pit. This was a beautiful place to say for our visit. read more

We booked two nights here, when we arrived my first impression was the room was smaller than I thought but really cute. The view of the ocean was perfect. Overall very clean and neat. Room is fully equipped with a microwave, fridge and coffee pot. The bed was super comfy and the pillows were plenty. Sleeping with a lot of pillows is a big deal for me so I was pleased. The staff at the office were so friendly and helpful. The cleaning staff knocked and asked if I needed her service instead of coming right in. I recommend staying here. Next time we come we are booking a cottage closer to the water! read more

Such an awesome place to stay! Judging by previous reviews they have definitely made quite a bit of updates. We had room 61 and it was perfect. Very clean and and the staff was very polite. The bathroom window was kind of dirty, but nothing to get bent out of shape about. The only draw backs I saw was parking as there was a white pickup that was parked behind our truck that made it a pain to back up. We are definitely planning on going back next summer and making it a yearly get away for us. read more

We arrived at Colonial Gables ready for a delightful summer afternoon on Penopscot Bay as we had upgraded our reservation online for an oceanfront room. When we were told our room was directly behind the lobby, I was more than unhappy. The curt reservation clerk told me we had ocean view and that was all we were getting. She said if I had an issue to take it up with orbitz. We had no choice but to take the room as it was paid for. The cabin was about a1/4 mile from the bay. The room, landscaping, and cabins are very tired and need a facelift. No lovely gardens or nice deck chairs. We overpaid for very adequate. read more

We only stayed one night here on a road trip up the eastern US, but it was a lovely stopover. The cabin was clean and well-equipped, especially the shower, which was powerful and hot. The verandah overlooks the beautiful Penobscot bay, and is lovely for early morning or evening relaxation. I would definitely recommend, as its proximity to some lovely lobster restaurants makes it perfect for food too. The staff are helpful and welcoming, making the Colonial Gables a perfect stay for one night or many. read more

I am giving two stars because of the gorgeous view. I have never stayed anywhere that was so dirty. Because of my allergies and asthma, I had to clean the cabin myself...And thank god for the fly swatter they left in the top drawer... You need it. Pet friendly is perfect for those who have pets! Those who are allergic, beware. Had to have the bed spread removed because it was covered in dog fur. Before you leave for the day, make sure you call down and ask for new towels. I have had the pleasure of staying at the Colonial Gables resort twice this year. The first time was on a family trip, and the second as a night away with my husband. During my first trip, I was able to experience many of the cabins on the resort property. Most of the cabins have been renovated and upgraded in their interiors. They're modestly appointed, but cozy and clean. Because the resort is located on a hill, every single cabin had a view of the ocean. My son loved playing on the playground near the beach, and I was able to relax with a book and enjoy the wide expanse of beach directly in front of the resort. I booked a second trip with my husband for late September. I called a day in advance and asked where our cottage was located. It was farther than I would have liked, and the ladies at the desk were extremely accommodating and upgraded us to a cottage directly on the beach, #27. Our cottage had a screened-in front porch, and steps directly down to the sand. It had not been renovated, but it was charming and warm nonetheless. We had rented kayaks through a local business, and they were waiting for us at arrival. We were able to hop right into the water right from our cabin and paddle our way through the bay, enjoying seals playing at sunset, and the next morning the most gorgeous sunrise of our lives. I will return to Colonial Gables again and again for the incredible location, and the lovely little cabins on the bay. read more

Just spent six days there and loved it. Old school in the best possible way. We were in cabin #7, one bedroom with two queen beds and two bathrooms. Clean and comfortable with a decent kitchen (important since we ate most meals in). The floors slant a bit, but that adds to its charm; hey, this place has been around since the fifties according to another guest I chatted with who has been coming here since she was a kid. As we're city folk raising our kids in an apartment, it was beyond glorious to let them run out the door and down to the beach front, where they spent hours with some new friends, piling up rocks to divert streams of water, swinging on the swingset, or just generally lazing around and daydreaming. We loved that they (and we!) could have a little independence in a very safe setting. Every day a staff member lays out a fire, and anyone can come down in the evening and light a match to it. We did that a few nights, enjoying a sociable time with the other guests. One night we made s'mores and listened to a mandolin/guitar duo. Heaven! Convenient to all kinds of things -- Belfast, Camden, Megunticook Lake (my new favorite place). My only wish is that there were some outdoor grills for barbecuing, and maybe some tables for eating outside. Otherwise, it was great and we'd definitely come back. read more

Staying at Colonial Gables is like stepping back in time... to your grandmother's house. I stayed in the motel portion, so I can't vouch for the cabins but it definitely needs some updating. Beyond the décor and bathtub that didn't drain well, this is a nice little spot to stay. It's right on the water, clean and run by a very friendly older woman. She presumably did the decorating, which explains why it's dated and she still uses the slide machine to run your credit card. However, this is still a pretty good option for an affordable place to stay. Each motel room has a deck/balcony that is equipped with chairs. Makes for a nice place to watch the sunset, while sipping some wine and reading a book. It feels very peaceful. The walls are pretty thin, so you can hear anyone walking outside but that didn't happen enough to be bothersome. If you do stay here, do not, I repeat, do not miss an opportunity to go to Young's Lobster Pound. Best eating experience I had on the Maine/New Hampshire coast. read more

I go here about twice a year, and I love it. There are nice little cottages, with nice amenities (even wifi!) In an excellent little Maine town. Dog friendly, my dog stays at no charge- even though he's a Great Dane! Belfast has a dog-park, supermarket, restaurants, nearby state parks, and is very quiet and comfortable. walk out to a rocky sandy beach, enjoy shuffleboard, quiet, cable tv, or campfires. It's one of my favorite places to stay. read more

Don't stay there, it was by FAR the worst weekend away I have ever had! so very, very bad, huge cracks in the dry wall, dirty windows, the freezer full of freezer burn, mold in the bathroom, the shower curtain wasn't attached to the wall and fell often, unfinished wooden door, refilled unsanitary toiletries, only one table fork (the other was a serving fork) and dirty kitchen drawers. All of that plus a staff so rude, when I complained and politely asked for a partial refund they made me cry. read more

Our cabin by the waterfront was perfect. We stayed for two nights and absolutely wished we had more time to stay longer. Our cabin was one of the smaller ones they have for rent. It had a king bed, mini kitchen (microwave, stove, mini fridge, sink) and small bathroom (shower). It seemed newly renovated, new fixtures, sinks, bathroom, gorgeous wood doors, and ceiling. It was a perfect size for two people. They have much larger multi-room cabins for families. You have access to the shore, a 30 second walk for most cabins, almost every cabin has a view of the water, some are actually on the shore. They have swings to sit on to watch the tide come in and out. There's a play set for children as well. If you're looking for a clean, on the shore, cabin place to stay in Belfast, I definitely recommend the Colonial Gables. It's reasonably priced (cheaper than the Quality Inn) comparably priced to the B&Bs. The only negative??? thing I can say is it's located on the opposite side of the shore than the downtown area. About a 5 minute or less drive around to the downtown. That was a plus for us, it was quiet. But if you want a place walking distance, this isn't it. read more

Spent two nights. The overnight rooms have a porch on the back with a great ocean view. Unfortunately the front faces US 1 and the traffic noise was bothersome. The room was dated but very clean. We had a very comfortable king bed and the TV was a newer bigger screen digital with Time Warner cable. The three issues which led to our rating was the spotty at best free wifi; the incredible noise from adjoining room water use and more significanty, we returned to our room late in the afternoon to discover it untouched by house keeping. Apparently their policy is to not enter rooms that are still occuppied unless asked. I wish we would have known this prior to leaving an unfinished fish dinner in the trash before spending the following day sight seeing. Not surprisedly we found this unacceptable. read more

This place is cute and charming and we didn't even know that there would be a mini kitchen stocked with dishes and things for cooking. The beach is alright but the water and views are really pretty. I just came from an awful hotel in Provincetown, MA and paid $575 a night there and this place is actually much nicer. Very clean and relaxed. read more
