I've taken my bikes to Colonial in Portsmouth for service 3 times in the last year and have had a great experience each time. Josh and Colin have both worked on my bikes and were great. They were able to fix the problem and get me in/out within a few hours which was awesome. In another instance, they took the lead in helping me with a mfg warranty issue which resulted in an upgraded replacement set of brakes from Shimano at no cost. This bike shop is like nothing else in the area. There are some decent shops in Portsmouth but none combine the kind of features this one does. I first went in because it looked gorgeous from the outside. The interior space is extremely well done. Tons of bikes from cruisers to time trial in one of the biggest bike stores I've ever been in. One of the best features is the spin studio. I regularly do spin classes during the week using their spin bikes and bring my own bike in on the weekend for a longer group ride using one of their trainers. There is a huge need for a triathlon shop in the Portsmouth area and Olivia, the person heading up the tri-gear part of the store, is doing a great job of providing a place for local triathletes to go. The store also sponsors the Vento Triathlon Club (http://ventotri.weebly.com) and as a result there is a nice community of triathletes forming. I've only had some basic service done so far so I can't comment much on the mechanic, but the work I had done was explained thoroughly and the pricing for services is clear and straight-forward. read more

This is my first time here. I must say that Pete was exceptionally helpful. He actually worked on and completed putting together my (new to me) used mountain bike right on the spot. I did not even purchase it there. It had been shipped to me in pieces. He took the time to show me how to adjust the shocks on the bike that I was was not familiar with. Being a Trek dealership. They even had a Trek water bottle that looks great on my new bike. They have a new customer. I will definitely be returning when I need work done on my bike,to buy a new bike or accessories. read more

We made a trip here on a Saturday afternoon to get my daughter a new bike for her birthday. The place was empty and when I asked the kid behind the counter to show us bikes for my daughter he said "this one or this other one". Two bicycles! The same bike just different colors! I asked him about the bikes on sale on the website snd he said he would have to order them from the warehouse. Why brick-and-mortar then? The website makes it look like they have a large selection, they don't. Might as well order online. Really disappointed and the kid behind the counter couldn't care less what we did. read more

Had a fitting done on the Trek Precision Fit in Colonial's fitting studio. After 10 years of riding a 5200 then Madone which have the same geometry it was discovered that I wasn't at my optimum riding position for power and comfort. Adjustments are made while pedaling which visually show via video and computer programming improvements in comfort, pedal stroke and power delivery. It really is some pretty cool stuff. I am excited about riding with the new changes and highly recommend the fit studio! read more

Brought in an existing bike had it serviced and added accessories on more than one occasion along with purchasing two kids bikes. The shop is clean and offers anything you could want for biking. If they don't have what your looking for in the store the staff will go out of their way to find, order and install that special part or accessory for a fair price. Used to love Trek until we took our bikes to be tuned up in Florida. Our bikes were built by the Trek shop in Portsmouth and they put the fork on my husband's bike on backwards. We always thought there was something wrong! Our bikes were in for tune ups several times to Trek for Tune ups and they were always rushed. read more

I just had a precision fit system bike fit with Josh, the "Mr Wizard" of bike fit. He was fantastic. I have never had a fit, have been cycling for 15 years and have a background in exercise mechanics. His knowledge of cycling biomechanics was quite impressive as was his methodical and precise technique. First, he checked cleat placement, took body measurements, then put my bike on a trainer with a video/computer link. There was nowhere to hide. Every imperfection in pedal stroke to body angle anomaly was addressed, corrected, and exercises were discussed to strengthen weaker muscles. I couldn't have been more pleased with Josh's fit and am excited to enjoy my new position on the bike. Thank you Josh. read more

Took two old bikes for tuneups to the Portsmouth location. Two old Citizens (over ten years old; not the folding kind). Not sure they were happy to see them, but they assured me they could take care of them. Cost was roughly $200. Pretty standard given they replaced a chain, etc, and I got great customer service at that juncture: Guy I dealt when I picked them up (took about a week for them to work on them) was lovely, said the bikes were in good shape, and offered to help me put the bikes in the back of my car. I got them home and tried them out a few days later when I was off work. First one was like a dream, like new. No problems. Second one: When I switched gears while riding, the whole mechanism seized up. I fell off -- onto one knee, hip (all plenty bruised now and knee is like an infant's head). Pedals wouldn't move. Chain stuck... Called them. Guy I spoke to wasn't particularly sympathetic. I get that: No one there is my friend or anyone's nanny. I called before bringing the bike back for them to fix it. I was told to wait while they did. Didn't take long. I tried to ascertain why it happened. Guy, different one, first implied it was how the bike was transported from the shop. It was of course the shop's employee who'd put the bikes in the car, stacking them carefully enough. Then he went on to say it was probably my fault: rider error, but he couldn't say because "he wasn't there." I'm a petite woman, middle-aged. I've been riding a bike since I was a kid, know to switch gears while pedaling. No refund was offered or apologies for my having to truck the bike there and back for another go. No one offered to help put the bike in the car. No regrets of any kind were issued or really any kindnesses offered at all. Super crappy customer service at this juncture and to a woman who knows when she's being patronized. Too bad. Won't go back. Wanted to buy a new bike from them. They deal in Treks. Maybe they do that well. But based on this, I'm going elsewhere and recommend others do too, if they hope for some consistency when doing business. read more

This place is like the Wal-Mart without the discount. It's obvious to me this shop is unique like the previous reviewer mentioned; unique in that it is obviously funded unlike the local shops that sprinkle the seacoast. Places that survive on reputation and relationships. I was in Portsmouth and needed to get a gift quickly. Even though there was apparently a big sale on shoes, the prices were very steep, so I basically went for the low end model and requested some clipless pedals as well. It was just a bit more than I was comfortable dropping,so I asked if he could work with me a bit; "no", are you the manager I asked. "No, but I'm not even going to bother asking him (he could hear and see us the whole time by the way), because I know he'll say the same thing. Innocently I mentioned, I guess I'm just used to my shop always throwing me like 10-15% off. "Maybe you should go there then" was his comment. I was with my six year old son, so I just quietly handed him the shoes and walked out. I will never return. read more

No way. My first Trek was bought in 1986, I've owned 5 and bought two through this store when it was co-owned with Scott Berger. My daughter just left there after dropping 70 bucks on her "purchased there road bike" for a 5 minutes cable adjustment and two minute safety check to prep for this year Cycle The Seacoast. After paying she asked them to adjust her seat and the snot said all you need is an allen wrench. Guess all the good reviews are from old riders with deep pockets. But a college student riding for charity will tell everyone she knows that the place has a unfriendly feel. Head to Papa Wheelies in Portsmouth or over to Dover Cyclery and get treated friendly. read more

Brought my 3 yr old road bike here to get serviced. When I brought it in there was absolutley nothing wrong with it, I just wanted it to get looked over. When I picked it up, it looked great. I put it on my bike rack and when I went to take it off about 3 hrs later my front tire was flat. It seems as though they pumped up my tire too much and blew a hole in the tube. When I took my bike for its first ride I noticed that my odometer wasn't working. They had rewired it but put it on the wrong side of the magnet.... I am new to biking and was still able to figure that one out. I will never go back here, very disappointed. read more

After purchasing a demo bike at very good price, I previously have had no experience with this shop. I dropped off the bike for a quick service of shifters and a possible problem with the rear suspension. After walking in a dead shop on a monday with no bikes in the stands, It was a week before my bike was even looked at, knowingly there was a potential warranty problem with the shock. I even had to call them to find out were the process was at. 48 hour turn around time they claim, funny! Three weeks later, here I sit, no bike. Wont be back again, customer service at best is childish. read more

I have bought 2 high end mountain bikes, a high end wheel set and tons of gear from Pete and crew at both the Portsmouth and Salem stores. I have also used their service department. I have always gotten excellent customer service. They also have great sales promotions. You can buy a good bike in almost any brand's lineup but Colonial Bike provides a great ownership experience and that's what really counts. read more

Had the frustrating misfortune of attempting to do business with these clowns. In a business that, when run well, focuses on customer service these guys come up far short. Came in to buy a bike and found that I they were more interested in moving inventory than fitting a bike to the rider. Not sure who manages this location, believe it is Mike, but he may want to circle around and see if he old job @ walmart is still available. So I arrive at the conclusion I need a 17.5 frame on a MTB. Well when I change models of the same bike I am told that I need a 21 frame because amazingly they don't have the 17 in that model but they do have the 21. When I move back to the original 17 model and state that I was told that it was in stock in the graphite color I get moved to a 19 frame which is in stock. Quoted price and no mention is made of Trek national sale going on that even their own website shows would have this bike being sold @ $120 less than sticker. WOW. Bottomline. If you want to do business here (far better options) then know what you want, and know what the website price is. Don't expect any level of service of professional or knowledgeable staff. Buyer beware. read more
