Coloma Cottages - Living room of the Riverdeck #2

This place had potential if we weren't nickeled and dimed for little things... First off, there…read moreare 8 pages of rules and policies (font 12) that you'll need to read which we read with a highlighter given previous Yelp comments. And yes, you will be reminded at every communication that you need to read them. Including a text the day before you check in. If you ask any questions, they'll send it to you like you've seen in other Yelper's reviews. Unlike hotels or AirBnBs, be aware that the rate is for just 2 people. They will charge $50 more per person. We had a little one with us and we were charged $50 more per night. (And yes, they will meet you at check-in to make sure you don't bring extra people!) Our cottage had a queen bed and a sofa bed. Presumably with the extra charge, we would have been given enough towels and linen for 3. Nope. There were towels for 2. And the sofa bed was a bare mattress with a throw without a sheet. We didn't complain since we brought our own linen. Despite being charged a cleaning fee of $50, know that you will still need to haul all of your trash to a trash bin 50 - 100 feet of your cottage. As other Yelpers have mentioned, the place is tired and old: filthy floors, dusty baseboards, tight shower knobs, weak AC, broken porch light... The deck didn't have the nice furniture that was in the photos. Yes, it's river front but getting down to the river is treacherous with many jagged rocks and makeshift steps - exercise caution with kids and elderly. There are no banks, just jagged rocks. We were here in April and it is very, very buggy - lots of mosquitoes and big flying bugs were found in the house every night. Just one screen door. No screens on any of the windows or front door. Beware - they are sticklers with checking out. We left the cottage on time but decided to take a few last minute photos near the river. After paying $2000 for 2 cottages for 3 nights, we were charged - after Danika / Sherry gave us a discount - an additional $25 for not having left the premises on time! We would not recommend this place and certainly will not be visiting again.

My review is very belated, but I just read a poor review and couldn't believe my eyes. None of the…read morethings that apparently happened to the negative reviewer happened to my 12 year old daughter, her 70 year old grandmother and I when we stayed there in June of 2013. The cabin was pristene. My mother in law is a stickler for cleanliness (like way, way overboard) and I was nervous about this but she was delighted with the accommodations. The hot tub was crystal clear when we arrived (by the way, I am pool and spa certified, nationally, and you never change the water between uses or guests... that is ridiculous. That is what chlorine, bromine and filtration systems are for. The grounds were so secluded and private, we never saw another soul (except for the horses on the adjacent pasture and a few deer). There simply wasn't a single thing lacking. The owner called us once, just after we arrived, to ask if there was anything we had wished was provided or that we forgot to bring, and to wish us a happy stay (as well as for my daughter to come up and feed the horses if she would like). We never heard from her again. The price was unbelievable for what you get. Like, I thought there must be some mistake. And deposit/cleaning was simply not an issue. I do tend to pride myself on tidying up any place I stay on vacation, as I myself have occupied the thankless (and well under-tipped) profession of cleaning up after people who wrongly believe that they can make as big a mess as they want simply because 'someone else is paid to do that'. Someone else is paid to scrub the toilet and wash the floor, strip, wash and replace the linens and wipe away all traces of your visit. They are not expecting to heavily scrub after a careless trail of filth. I've never had a deposit withheld. Perhaps it's a good rule of thumb to tidy up after yourself. I loved Walker's Cabin - so much that a conversation more than three years after my stay with a couple gal friends prompted me to look it up and see if it is still available for rent. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat - and for me, that includes round-trip flights from Seattle and a decent drive in a rental car. Absolutely worth it.

I regret not learning her name to give her credit for making the stay perfect. She was very friendly and gave lots of good advice on places to eat. Overall just a really nice woman, she made us feel like we had been friends for years. The room was very nice as well. We stayed in a two bedrooms, and it had plenty of space. It's been updated and had a cute kitchen with two refrigerators. The beds were all upgraded to memory foam mattresses. There were extra pillows and blankets in the closet. The heater worked well and warmed up the room nicely while we went to dinner. The hotel is old so the floors are not exactly level but it adds to the charm. This place is about 150 years old. It has seen many historic figures pass through its doors, most noteworthy for me was Mark Twain. He's been my favorite author all my life. This hotel is in the heart of Placerville and easy to walk the cute historic Main Street and close to lots of restaurants and shops. It's definitely worth the visit if you're stopping over in Placerville. It's been very well maintained and in great condition for its age. I most especially loved the elevator! It's a piece of history all on its own!
