As of 1/18/25, the restaurant has closed. This place used to be the nicest restaurant in Terrell. The fun, eclectic decor is still there, although the ceiling train no longer runs, but unfortunately the restaurant has really slipped. When we walked in, there were a few other diners in the restaurant, and the staff had evidently gotten behind on clearing tables. We were seated at a table, and the hostess took our drink order. We looked at the menu (which no longer includes prime rib or BBQ) and the waitress took our orders for steaks and salads. We sat for a good 15 minutes, and then the waitress came out with our steaks. We had to ask for our salads because she had totally forgotten them! The steaks were just ok. They were covered with W Sauce, which we would not have chosen if we'd been asked beforehand. The sides were Ok, especially the broccoli and cheese, but nothing special. The waitress did ask if we wanted dessert but we declined. Sadly, unless there's a major change, we probably won't go back. Cole Mountain has been a great restaurant to have dinner at with for the last decade or so but sadly me and my family will not be returning to this establishment. For some very odd reason, that I cannot even begin to fathom, they have just decided to remove their iconic "chopped BBQ beef sandwich" from their menu. POOF...GONE! WHY? This is supposedly a BBQ place but I didn't see anything on the menu that could even be considered BBQ. Over the last few years I've noticed that every restaurant close to the down town area does everything they can to literally tank their own business and this is no exception. We ordered the Cole Mountain Burger and the Brisket Burger. They were both cooked so perfectly. They were juicy. The lettuce was so green, fresh and delicious. The grilled onions set it off! We also tried the 8oz ribeye. I asked for medium and it was so tender, juicy and medium! It was bursting with chargrilled flavor! Then there was the blackberry cobbler and ice cream! Wow!!! Four Stars... Five Stars... It really depends on one's perspective. In this case, I am giving this restaurant five stars because I am NOT comparing it to the more "refined" eating establishments in big cities like Dallas. That said, the food quality was very, VERY good! If you're okay with rustic and peculiar - solely a reference to the decor and ambiance of this place, you WILL NOT be disappointed! It's simple, "down home cookin'" and friendly service at its finest. The salads were plentiful and fresh. The chicken fried steak was the perfect size and was cooked perfectly! The white cream gravy was tasty enough to drink and the (homemade) mashed potatoes were delicious! We were a party of four and everyone in our party echoed the above sentiments! We were all so full that we sadly skipped dessert. Although, I did ask about the peach cobbler and was told it was not homemade. Restrooms were clean and stocked. Eat well. Be well. I went out on a limb and ventured out from or normally places we eat and after asking a guy he suggested this place I'm not sure why I ordered the ribs and cowboy chicken with coleslaw and there house made beans ,the ribs were way over cooked tough hard to cut with a knife even I did eat it though cause I ordered it the chicken wasn't much better , coleslaw was good ,beans were ok not anything outstanding ,the bread pudding was fair though overall service was great food quality was very very poor I would not recommend My wife's potatoes tasted like instant mashed potatoes and chicken fried steak was ok but nothing to ride home about Overall I think I'd pass if in area unless I'm starving and that never happens Hopefully they improve read more

What a gem! This local eatery has all of the rustic charm that you would expect from a small town Main Street restaurant. The chicken fried steak was excellent, and the baked potato had just the right amount of topping so that you weren't left with a dry spud after two bites. Service was great as well. Im a native dallasite that took my mom to Terrel to get some clothes at a place she likes. Id been thru Terrel many times as a kid but not for years. So, i wanted to find a good place to eat that would leave me glad id come to Terrel. This is the place. After walking in the front door of a place down the street, i turned around and drove back here. We werent disappointed. I got the chicken fried steak and it didnt disappoint. Another of our party got the brisket which needs work. The ribs got a good report. I wouldnt hesitate to stop here when in the area. However, i do think the owners need to ride herd again for awhile to bring it up a notch or two where no doubt it used to be a few years ago. Also they were short on waitresses and hopefully this oversight wont repeat often. It really takes away from the experience. We came in just after lunch time and were seated quickly. I thought they were closed for a second because upon entry to have to keep walking through to find a waitress. Appears to be a very old place with a bunch of interesting decor to look at on the walls. My food was good(chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and fried okra). They were out of Bits and pieces (I think we all wanted that ). Friends had pot roast and hamburger steak and they said it was ok. So get the chicken fried steak. I occasionally find myself and my family (we come here to visit my mom several times a year) with the same quandry that everyone who either lives in Terrell or who is just passing through probably has - as in - 'Where the heck do you eat in this town?' It is the same story - year after year. One night in November 2014 - after pondering ALL the dining choices in Terrell - my Mom finally decided on Cole Mountain. For me, I was skeptical. My skepticism was based on the fact that (O.K., it was probably 15 years ago) my last visit was a solid two stars. The good news for TODAY is - our 2nd trip here was decidedly better than the first. We were promptly seated with a table for seven and given menus and drinks. Service started out good on a busy Saturday night - which was a good sign. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich which was good. My son (13) had the hamburger (which was ordered and delivered as medium rare) and fries - both of which he liked as well. My older brother had the chicken-fried steak and cowboy beans. The steak was very large (as big as his plate) and beans were fine - he was happy with both. My sister ordered the rack of BBQ ribs and liked them as well. All in all, this visit was a good experience for our large group = good food, solid/pleasant service, building had a historical ambiance (clean, not musty), and prices were reasonable. Been three times now both times the food was good-- The taste of the steaks and sides are great, large selection of sides great old building but the service needs a lot of work, no seating when you come in no one to meet you with no indication of if you are to wait or seat yourself---waited for 7 min at table before anybody toke our drink order still no menu---sign outside said best prime rib in town was good and tender but no flavor at all---I will try again but will order a steak but very over priced for what you get. If disabled I did not see any way for you get in this place--don't see how they get away with this in this day and age. I want to like this place but needs alot of work to improve rating. read more

We've been here tons over the last 10 years and I'm sad to report that the quality has really gone down over the last year. This used to be the beat steakhouse in the county, rivaling places like Roadhouse or Saltgrass...not any more. The quality of meat they're using now are the much cheaper cuts and very obvious. In our last 2 visits (4 of us each time) 2 plates were undercooked and 2 were overcooked. Even little things like their plates and silverware are cheap. Plates are probably clean, but they have several knife marks in them like they're long overdue for replacement. None of the silverware at our table matched, cheap bent forks, etc....reminded me of a school cafeteria. If their prices were cut in half, it'd be a decent value. read more

My friends $20+ dollar 12 oz ribeye was paper thin which is ridiculous. The chicken fried steak as okay but the gravy seemed packaged and no mushrooms? I would say all appetizers are prepackaged frozen - the only thing you get plenty of? Cigarette smoke! I thought I would need a lung xray by the time I left - clothes stunk a day later. We went expecting a steakhouse, this restaurant used to be Culpeppers. The parking lot, exterior and interior are all in need of a good cleaning and repair. When you walk in there is no clear direction or hostess stand, The staff all had on T-shirts advertising other restaurants. The food didn't fare much better, very diner-y. The burger was a preformed frozen patty like from Sam's with frozen french fries. My husband is allergic to soy which is used as a filler in ground meat a lot, think school burgers, we didn't expect to have to worry about that at a steak place, but yep said preformed patty was a soy bomb. The grilled chicken salad was decent, just chicken and plain iceburg with dressing, absolutely nothing special. The chicken fried steak was huge but bland. I was really glad we hadn't splurged and ordered steak, the quality of everything was just really low. Overall if you go in with low expectations you won't be disappointed, but if you go in expecting a Texas steakhouse meal, well just go somewhere else. read more
