I absolutely love the cville SPCA. We have had a few problems, mostly relating to the poor foster…read moreteam being completely slammed and overworked which is not their fault at all. Just know that they have a lot of people to help, and patience goes a long way! Here are three areas I will comment on: Fostering: The people who work here are very knowledgeable and care about their animals, and the cat were fostering right now is a total gem. Fostering is totally free, and they provide all the materials you need. They don't allow you to meet the animals ahead of time, so definitely be intuitive reading the foster board. Please look at the medical fosters too! Many of them ar totally healthy, like our cat, and are recovering from minor non contagious issues. The one we have is totally friendly and a great cat. Strays: I brought in one a couple months ago and the spca was able to microchip and check him to see if he was neutered. I brought in a second stray yesterday morning and called to check on him and the worker was so personable and we had a long conversation about his health. I was concerned they would be bothered with me calling to check but was surprised to find the total opposite. ALSO - they have pens in the back specifically for anonymous dumps. I absolutely hate when people drop cats off (I live in the city of cville so it happens all the time), but PLEASE take them to the spca instead. You can do so anonymously but it's so much more humane than leaving them on the street. Adoptions: the prices are really reasonable, and while I haven't adopted (yet), I know fostering is a great way to transition into adoption. I'm not sure theyre doing meets with the animals because of covid, but fostering is a free way to see if the animal fits in your house and you can adopt at any time. Overall, I love the SPCA and would always get a dog or cat from here rather than a breeder.

We adopted a very sweet dog from the Fredericksburg Animal Shelter. She was described as a…read more7-year-old mixed breed who enjoyed playing but was also happy to sit quietly indoors with us. We are an elderly couple and reside in an over 55 community, so we did not want a dog that was too energetic. She is a sweet dog, and we love her and are trying our best to work with her. That is the good part. Hint: We found a vet who agreed to work with us/her. The vet prescribed Prozac for anxiety. NOW! This SPCA seems to be a sloppy organization. 1. When we got there, a staff member pointed to a door and said that we could go there and see the animals. We didn't need a lot of directions, but we had to find the dogs on our own by following our own noses. 2. We had to wait a long time to meet the dog. 3. The answer to every question about the dog was, "I don't know." 4. The paperwork we received about the dog described her as 2 years old and gray. Her age on the cage was 7 and she IS brown. When the inaccuracy of the paperwork was brought to their attention, the answer was "that's ok". 5. We were ignorant and just accepted the mixed breed description. Mixed breed, perhaps but many people have stated that she looks like a pit. This has caused us a lot of grief in our over 55 community. 6. We were told her bad points are she doesn't like her butt touched & is afraid of syringes. Truth: Although she is a sweetheart to us and other people, she will not tolerate any vet. 7. She was so dirty when we got her that before going home, we had to take her immediately to PetSmart for a bath. 8. PetSmart could not bathe her with the neck collar from the shelter on and it was so tight that they were unable to get it off. The collar was so tight that my husband had to cut it off. Poor dog. How could any shelter allow a collar to be that tight?! This shelter should be investigated regarding truth in advertising and animal care.

My experience adopting a kitten from here was wonderful…read more These people really love cats - from what I can tell, it's a pretty small group that rescues and fosters on the side while working full-time. I fell in love with a kitten online, but there was already an applicant ahead of me, so I resigned myself to accepting I probably wasn't going to get him. But Pam was so great - she stayed in constant communication with me, and when she hadn't heard back from the other applicant in two days, she emailed me at 10pm to say I had first dibs (which I feel is fair) and that she'd make sure the kitten was at the adoption event for me to come see the next afternoon. So we headed over to Pet Valu in Clifton to meet the kitten and adored him right away. Kristen was so sweet, helpful and genuinely happy to see that one of her kittens had found a new home. She provided us with tons of info and advice, along with a Pet Valu adoption coupon kit. Their vetting process is pretty standard; you fill out an application with details about your living situation, current pets etc. In the final stages, you sign a contract promising not to declaw and that you'll send them proof of having the kitten spayed/neutered. The experience was quite painless (unlike interactions I've had in the past with some larger/more well-known rescue groups), and these women are doing a fantastic job. Definitely check out their kitties if you're looking to adopt!
