I'm confused as to why there are some bad reviews. I had a great experience, got two bagels and two coffees. The staff was friendly and helpful because I couldn't, for the life of me, find the burrito options. The only thing I will say, and this is 100% on me because I didn't say I wanted them "to-go", but the cups were so full, when I put the lids on, they spilled out. It's a quiet coffee shop and I live down the street from Coffeetopia and always went to their other location because I had literally no clue there was one right here. I tried this place for the first time by buying a "Too Good To Go" bag. The gal at the front just looked at my phone, grabbed a bag and gave it so me. No pleasantries whatsoever. I got to my car and noticed the bottom of the bag was all greasy. I opened the bag up and there were 6 bagels sitting on top of 3 pastries. So the pastries got smashed (hence the greasy bottom of the bag). This AM I picked up a too good to go bag at the Capitola Road location and the experience was 100% different. I was greeted with a "good morning" and a smile. The young man behind the counter handed me the bag and told me to have a nice day. The whole vibe was so much nicer so I also grabbed a smoothly. AND to top it off I had received a more substantial bag (not greasy) cuz the bagels were at the bottom of the bag and the 3 pastries were wrapped nicely in little individual bags placed on top of the bagels. This place is great. We're out of towners who stopped here for a coffee fix, upon walking in we were greeted by friendly welcoming staff, who were smiling, helpful and patient, which I loved. I love this place and the coffee is great. However, the last two times I was there I ordered a smoked Salmon bagel, very disappointing. the first time, when I opened the wrapper, there was no salmon. They will forget to call your name when the drink is made, which leads to confusion when it is busy and multiple people are waiting for their order. They serve Santa Cruz coffee, which is better and my favorite. It is very much unlike Cat & Cloud, which is often filled with strollers, noisy, long lines and nowhere to park. Dropped by over the 4th of July weekend and ordered one mocha,a Brazilian coffee and a veggie burrito. Waited over 20 min-finally I ask the cashier and she looked completely clueless and said "the mocha and coffee are self serve" I said what!? I proceed to ask her about the veggie burrito and she had completely forgotten about my order. Mind you the burritos are pre made-they only require a microwave. Let me start by saying, their bagels and cream cheese is 5 stars. I've been a regular here for years, and will continue to come here for my morning coffee and bagels. The reason I give it 3 stars is because of the rude woman who has long red hair (usually in braids), glasses, tattoos, and lots of makeup. She works almost everyday (unfortunately). She is incredibly rude and short with everyone. It doesn't seem like her coworkers enjoy working with her either. She treats customers as if they are an inconvenience. I really hope she gets a job somewhere else so my mornings aren't burdened with her awful energy. She seems very unhappy at this awesome coffee shop. Maybe she should not work the register. If she takes my order, I don't tip. Everyone else who works there is great! Very friendly, and helpful! read more

Really like this coffee shop. It's rare to find a place that does all coffee drinks well. For example a Cafe Americano at most places taste like watered down expresso and I usually never order it. Here they make one that tastes like a real bold cup of expresso. I usually get steamed almond milk for the extra .75 cents and it a great cup of joe. I've also had their pour overs and again they do a great job and pour slowly and thoroughly. The people who work here are all super nice. Bonus they have 3 vegetarian burritos that have vegetarian sausage or tofu, the later tofu one is made vegan. They also put out pitchers with both soy and almond milks. That has to be a first I have seen. The atmosphere is cool with a brick Mexican style decor and the inside has a rustic brick style interior. It's in a funky older style shopping center close to the beaches so it's very easy to do a coffee pit stop when on the go. Little capitola hidden gem. read more

I've been going to this place off an on for almost a year now. Last week, a double espresso took 20 minutes to serve. I know...there's a learning curve... But today the staff was super horrible and should be reprimanded or let go...I ordered a double espresso like I have been doing three times a week for the past month or so (usually tipping). But when the cashier/barista rang it up, he charged me double. I said, "Why is it double? Two days ago, it was $3.25 (I save a quarter by using my own cup.) No answer. Then the cashier told me he was going to charge me for the coffee in my cup. I told him I brought it in with me. He sneered and threw the change back which fell to the floor. I dropped the other two quarters on the floor. The other cashier, told me, "We aren't going to make your order. Don't come back." I guess management gets the staff that represents them. We stumbled upon Coffeetopia a few years ago, while visiting Santa Cruz. We tried the other coffee places, but liked the cappuccini at Coffeetopia the best of all those we tried. We just made another visit to Santa Cruz, trying some of the other coffee places we missed the last time, and Coffeetopia came out on top again. The drip coffee medium roast 12 oz for $1.65 is strong, flavorful and gets me on point to take on the day. You guys ran out of everything bagels today, but the poppy was just as good. The staff is very friendly without being overly perky and weird. All of your clientele is mellow, from the surfers, artists, students, to the older folk just trying to get a start before work. A surfer hang out that gets it right. First, the coffee is excellent. They do a pour-over bar that is different. They set up the pour over, and you grab your cup when you ever want. Bring your own mug, or use their paper cup. There is something cool about that and the coffee is great. The local folks are fun, and there are lots of cool spots to people watch. My favorite line while eavesdropping last week on the morning after a 400 point drop in the stock market (and remember, this is 2011): 'Dude, it's not my fault. I voted for Bush.' read more

RUDE STAFF AND NOT TRUSTWORTHY AT ALL TO GET YOUR ORDER CORRECT, I HAD AN ALLERGIC REACTION AND FOOD POISONING. I grabbed my drink and my wrapped breakfast burrito, just to be sure I asked the girl handing it to me that it was for sure my VEGAN burrito, she assured us it was and we walked back to our table. I took my first bite and I thought it tasted a bit off.. but thought it should be fine because I literally just double checked with her... so I took one more bite and I was now certain it was off. I tasted and felt the texture of egg and cheese in my mouth and looked into my burrito and there was definitely a whole lotta fluffy, yellow a** egg and stringy cheese. I threw the rest of my burrito out and just left. I really didn't feel like saying anything to the staff about it as I doubted it would be helpful based on my experience with ordering, her giving me the incorrect food after I even double-checked, and previous experiences with rudeness and unprofessionalism here. Well anyways I proceeded to have TERRIBLE FOOD POISONING/ALLERGIC REACTION FOR 3 WHOLE DAYS after that. I also ordered a drink with my food which honestly was not great either and I didn't finish it but seemed to at least be able what I ordered. I'm a local and although it seems like it's a favorite for some in the area, even before this I rarely came here as the staff usually has an unfriendly or unwelcoming vibe, but after this I definitely will not ever have any desire to return. Super helpful and friendly team and they really go out of their way to make your food/drinks. I study here frequently since it's always such a calm environment. I went to get a breakfast bagel at about 2pm but they had already ran out of bagels. The lady helping me asked if I wanted to try it on a croissant instead even though that wasn't on the menu.
