I am sharing this review based off my experience working in there, drinking an Italian soda and just checking in the vibes.... OK, so first off, the customers in here are really nice. You can always appreciate the laid-back being anywhere in Santa Cruz or Capitola. They are right on a main street with parking in the back and they have a cute outside seating area with chairs and umbrellas. It's a pretty large and nice size coffee shop with ample seating and an extended couch/booth area. They have a lot of outlets to do work quietly or to read or charge your phone. I really like that they close at 6 PM too a lot of coffee shops close at three or four. If you're here long enough and haven't eaten, they sell food and snacks. Also a pretty good option of beverages like coconut water, soda, waters, and smoothies, or plain sodas. You can come in and get a soup or some cookies, a protein bar, or, some bagels- they legit have it all. I haven't tried anything food or coffee wise, but my Italian soda is pretty delicious. The two cashiers were really nice and everyone just seems to be on the best chill vibes. I will definitely save this place and return in the future. Super jazzed to have Mexican coffee, but was super disappointed. Watery, not typical to other establishments. Said something to barista who shrugged her shoulders and said that's how we make it. They state in store to not support 'commercial' 'chains', however Starbucks, Peets, Dutch Brothers would all say ' can we give you something else?' Been getting breakfast burritos from here for months, most of the time they are really good, a few times they are sloppily made. Inconsistent. I always call ahead and pay for an xtra salsa. Get there today and pay with my applecard. The young girl at the register looked super stressed then tells me that they are out of Salsa. Why didn't you say anything before you charged me xtra? She said that she would credit my card but never did. I understand that places run out of items but to charge me then tell me you're out is just bad customer service. read more

My daughter recommended this place to me. I really needed an afternoon pick me up. I got a hot chai latte with almond milk. It was tasty but it wasn't sweet enough for me. It's probably good to have a little less sugar :). My daughter ordered a strawberry smoothie which said was very good. I tried it. I agree. Lots of seating inside and out. The staff is friendly, but slow war training in movement is needed The cleanliness is completely absent -when you look around or go in the bathroom you wonder if that's how they treat the food prep area -whoever manages this place needs to get this disaster cleaned up. My whole family and I have been in the business. The staff should show up early and stay late to keep it clean. Help. I've loved you for the 9 years I've lived 3 blocks from you -- especially your wonderful staff. You've been like my living room, where I've gone to write or to meet friends. I send all my clients from out of town to you. But for the last maybe two years, there's been an individual who sits inside for several hours - every morning - who probably struggles with mental health issues. I have enormous compassion for that; it's my life's work to help others find better mental health. However, this gentlemen's struggles often present in a way that feel unsafe for me. So, I started skipping my coffeetopia, or getting one to go when I craved it. But wow -- that was a serious grieving period. There's a meaningful intimate bond that forms with the neighborhood coffee shop, and losing it had an impact. In the last few months, I've tried to return, just sipping my coffee on your outside walkway. And that's been okay, although it's definitely not the same. Anyway, I (she/her) just lost all my hair for medical reasons, which is predictably distressing, but also surprisingly chilly -- so when I braved going out this morning, I needed to sit indoors. I sat closest to the baristas, as the aforementioned gentlemen was in the back... but he was listening to news on his phone so loudly I could hear every word about a homicide report. I kindly asked him if he could use earbuds, and he said he was hard of hearing. I asked if he might just turn it off and read his newspaper instead, or listen outside. He said ok boss, and I thanked him genuinely. A customer seated nearby thanked me on my way back to my seat. Once I sat down, the gentleman called out (loudly) "b!Tch" several times, and eventually turned his news back on. Time for me to leave. But first I had to order a soy chorizo burrito for my vegetarian partner - which I always do when I'm there. When I ordered, I told the barista what had just happened, and the response was, "I'm sorry for the inconvenience." Are your staff not empowered to help customers feel safe? Is it unreasonable to ask people to wear earbuds or go outside for loud phone activity? Or to ask a threatening person to leave? I sincerely believe everyone has a place in this world - I don't want this gentlemen to be punished. But I am heartbroken that I don't feel safe to return (or to send my clients) to my longtime neighborhood coffee spot that is 3 blocks from my house. read more

Used to enjoy coming here regularly for the excellent vegan breakfast burrito and cold brew. But, in a cost cutting measure they stopped making the vegan burrito so now all the burritos have meat and/or cheese. Since then, I don't come here anymore. It would be nice if other considerations were more valued. The manager said tofu is just not en vogue anymore and it wasn't selling enough. But oddly, they were often sold out of the vegan burritos in my experience. And, a vegan breakfast burrito or non-dairy burrito can easily be made without tofu. read more

Don't expect to get what you ordered! I don't know what happened but the quality has decreased astronomically in the last month. They can not make a bagel order correct to save their life. I haven't gotten the correct bagel in about a month. Met a friend here for coffee. Attractive and very clean place. But Coffee weak and expensive. Staff unfriendly and ignored my $1 tip. I waited almost 15 minutes for latte, and because they don't take names, had to return to counter 3x to check if it was ready. And at the time (Sunday morning 945) it wasn't that busy. My friends and I came here and were very disappointed in the service. The worker on the register seemed to know nothing when we asked questions about the menu, they seemed to maybe be new but the girl working with them also seemed to not know much. We tried to order a specialty latte but there out of sweet cream, my friend also tried to order an arnold palmer which they seemed very confused at that order but they had no lemonade. We came around 1pm so we were surprised they were out of so much stuff. My friend then tried to order an italian soda, which is clearly written on the menu, the first worker had no clue what she said and the second girl came over and started listing syrup flavors but then she asked if that was even on THEIR OWN menu then tried to tell us that the Waterloo sparkling waters in their cooler were the italian sodas. I never leave reviews but I'm so sad about how Coffeetopia has changed so much within the last month or two. It seems like there was a complete staff change, and while everyone there is friendly, it's not the same. The previous employees were much more personable & clearly had built relationships with regular customers. I'm also being charged A LOT more now for the same things I've been getting for the past few years...I know inflation hasn't been helping things but I'm being charged about $2 more for the same drink I've always gotten. This has been happening since the new employees have started. They also almost never have bagels now when I try to get one, doesn't matter if it's in the morning on my way to work or on the weekend. I'm so sad because it feels like Coffeetopia is going downhill & this was my favorite place to get reasonably prices, good quality food & beverages along with such amazing staff. 2 stars because I love the food and drinks, but don't recommend coming during a tight lunch break. Hate to be this person, but baristas were chatting, sweeping, restocking while 3 customers were waiting for 10 plus minutes. A customer asked what was going on, and a barista said they were working as fast as they could. Food orders came out, but no drinks were even started. I visited from out of town so was unfamiliar with this place. I walked in and was confused by where to start. There seemed to be two order areas. I ordered a house coffee. I asked where to add MILK or if she would add it. She said, "around the corner". Then I asked how to get my coffee because she didn't ask for my name. I didn't see the coffee on the counter because someone waiting for their order was standing there. She was very rude. When I mentioned milk, she should've offered milk or said they didn't have any. First visit was very awkward.... Always wanted to come into this place because it's next door to the groomer. When I got there I told the man behind the counter I wanted a Thai iced tea but was curious if they had milk alternatives. In a condescending tone told me condensed milk was lactose so couldn't be changed..... I tried to explain that some places have condense coconut milk but it was okay regardless. I ordered the Thai ice tea (as is), and two black coffees Two black coffees came out fine. Way over filled. But tasted fine. I was then told (by someone different than the cashier) the iced coffee on the counter was for me.... when I told him I didn't order that, he scoffed. I told him I ordered a Thai ice tea , he seemed confused (maybe he was new and didn't know how to make it ?). After a minute a third man asked me what kind of tea I ordered Green or Black..... I then told this new person I ordered a Thai ice tea. I ended up walking away with a chai tea.... very watery. I'm sure it was all just a series of misunderstanding but the first two interactions really were off-putting...and then to walk away with not the right order was a bummer. I'll still give this place another shot and write a follow up review, hope it's different next time. read more

I felt an updated Yelp was in order. Recently I rated this place 2 stars after a strange experience. I went in asked about sun dried tomato cream cheese and was rudely told that "only 3 people a week buy it so I don't even want it here." I didn't come back for a few weeks. Came back and takes to a very pleasant women who informed me that man was very wrong. Sun-dried cream cheese is here to stay! It was a problem with the delivery company not the cafes choice to remove the product. Also they have a gluten free bagel here. Which is fantastic!!!!! Are you serious! So, I wanted a coffee with sugar free carmel & heavy cream(its Keto).... they have heavy cream but are unwilling to give it to me bc its for their whipped cream. This is really upsetting to me bc I'd really like to support local businesses. Yet, Starbucks is the only place i cant actually order what I need.
