Leeward Coastal Café - The view from the cafe

We stopped by Leeward Coastal Cafe in October 2024. This is a bakery cafe which is what we were…read morelooking for. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and my partner ordered the quiche. My sandwich was delicious and just right. It was served panini style. My coffee was also very good. Service was very pleasant and helpful. You order at the counter and the server brings your order out. This is the off season so it wasn't very busy although more people were coming in as we were finishing up. We had a nice view of the boats at the dock and the mountains (there were lots of Sea Lions on the government dock which is just a couple of minutes away). I would definitely return and can certainly recommend this cafe for coffee or breakfast. It looks like they've got some good selections for lunch but that will have to wait until we can return to Cowichan Bay.

The unappetizing slice of grey mushy mushroom quiche arrived with white melted oily cheddar on top. The crust was as oily. Unlike any quiche I have ever had before. The Chicken and chick pea , savoy cabbage soup was served in a to go coffee cup despite our request for the on patio meal. It was watery and bland. The Campesino sandwich arrived toasted as requesting but a mess to eat, oozing out the sides. Plated food could be made more appealing and so could the service. We had to request for napkins. If you eat here wait to tip until after you eat. This seems to be a new Café and there is definite room for improvement.

Easily one of the most popular spots on Vancouver Island…read more The sun peaked out in January and everyone and their mom visited Shirley Delicious Cafe. To be honest, I completely understand why. This cafe is a step above the rest. The inside is cozy, with a cabin-esque vibe and clear ceilings in their dining room for an indoor-outdoor feel. Despite the line of 20+ people, Shirley Delicious worked like a well oiled machine. Their menu included breakfast, lunch, and even a flight of soup (which I so desperately wanted). I ordered their date pastry, a hot caramel latte, and breakfast sandwich with avo. Each item was absolutely delicious. This is also a great location to shop for island goodies. Their storefront is filled with jams, sauces, metal working artwork, etc. Can't believe they can pack so much goodness into four little walls!

You order and pay first, then find a seat inside or outside. Ample seating options. For drinks, they'll call your name and you pick it up at the counter, while they will bring you your entrée. We came for breakfast, so I had a croissant BLT Harvati sandwich and a latte. My friend had a vegan wrap and a latte as well. The whole indoor feels like a greenhouse once before and transformed to indoor cafe. There are tons of metal welding artwork around and many little retail shopping corners inside. My croissant did not let me know, it was so delicious! They also have a small coffee/ice cream/grab-n-go trailer outside. Overall it's a nice place for breakfast or lunch! We tried coming back again, but the power went out so we weren't able to order anything AND have cash. Guess I'll have to come back to visit!

Today I had a latte which I give an easy five out of five. I highly recommend trying multiple items on the menu as each option came with a carefully selected assembly of ingredients and by carefully I mean an attention to detail I've rarely seen in a coffee shop. The honey they use is locally sourced and chosen for its particular flavor. These people really care about the coffee they make, and it shows. The atmosphere is set with a behind-the-bar turntable and today they were playing a wonderful selection of vintage jazz. If you're in the region, make your way down to Crofton for the coffee, stay for the view, but savor the coffee

I will go out of my way to get an iced salted honey latte from SPAN. The honey comes from just down the road (Nielsens Honey). If you need a little snack, they also have a changing variety of delicious croissants and muffins by local bakery all star Hank. I asked about the coffee beans they use, and you guessed it -- locally roasted beans, just for them, by roaster Oughtred made especially for the cafe to the owners' specifications. Span is a block from the Crofton ferry on-ramp, so you can take your coffee to go & wait in the queue, or enjoy in the big park across the street while your kids & dogs play, or while you beachcomb, or on the short walk back to your beautiful Osbourne Bay campsite! Vibes are warm & welcoming, sometimes with jazz music on the record player. Design is sleek, clean and uncluttered, but still 100% West Coast, with lots of natural light, and beautiful natural materials. The owners are also artist-designer-craftspeople and have a perfectly curated shop featuring VanIsle artists that changes all the time. It always makes my day to chat with Tanya & Juaning whether it's about coffee, travel, or _local_ happenings!

I like that you order with the cashier and they deliver the food to your table, so it's like partial food service. This is great for people coming in groups so you don't have to worry about splitting the bill. I ordered a grilled cheese with cheddar, and egg added inside. I do wish the cheese was a little more melted, but the bread was perfectly crispy and soft. For my side I chose the tomato bisque, which was pretty creamy and lacked a strong, tangy tomato flavor. I would skip the tomato soup next time and opt for a different side. The sweet potato fries were DELICIOUS, they were so crispy on the outside and not soggy. I do wish they had different sizes for the sides, because the full order of sweet potato fries is huge and a little excessive if you're already ordering an entree that come with a side. There is an extra charge for ranch dipping. My friends were all happy with their food. There is a bathroom that also brings you to free roaming chicken! I do want to come back to try their ice cream and pies!!!

I had the chickpea burger, which fell apart as soon as you held it (but the bun was delicious). The truffle parm fries upgrade was 1000% worth it. My partner had the whirly burger with clam chowder (which she said was local but not made in house). Both were yum! The clam chowder was perfectly creamy (not chunky if that's more your speed) but had little clams. The blackberry pie (not pictured because we ate too fast) was also so sweet and had the best crust! Service was kind and helpful when asked. You order at the bar and then clean up after yourself. There is a lot of seating inside and outside (under cover, as well). After we were done, we walked the grounds to find some chickens and emu!
