I was very impressed with Dr. Mintz. I'm 51yo and have had many eye exams, but this was the first time that I've learned so much nuance and detail about how my eyes are shaped, how they interact with contacts/glasses/reading-glasses, how lens design impacts comfort levels, and other personal details. He ended up tweaking my prescription and recommending a looser-fitting lens that I have to admit is noticeably more comfortable! He was also kind enough to dial me in on the right reading glasses that I needed, and refer me to an opthamologist for health maintenance. Plus he was a cool dude to chat with! Update: The insurance company investigated their fraudulent activity and gave them an opportunity to defend themselves which they did not. In the end, a year later, the insurance company took back the money they stole and confirmed that this business committed insurance fraud. If you have Medicaid or MetroPlus, go elsewhere as they are about to lose the ability to bill these companies do to their fraudulent and criminal activity. I had a wonderful experience with the optical doctor earlier today. He was very informative about what astigmatism meant and any questions I had. I was given contacts for free with my $50 eye exam for both glasses and contacts ! First time being seen here... and let me tell you, it won't be the last! I had to wait a little passed my appointment time but that didn't bother me at all. It's a nice, quaint, clean place. The doctor was very informative and kind. He even put my contacts on for me! Which is new cuz nobody's ever done that! As per the agreement between my insurance and Coco, my co-payment is $40. Coco charged me $88. I came here about 4 years ago and found some gorgeous glasses with the help of the woman at the front. She was patient and honest about which frames looked good on me, and I left feeling beautiful. I called yesterday to find out about replacing the lenses, and the woman on the phone was kind and patient and broke down the cost very clearly for me. When I went in with my frames, she was not pushy at all and very understanding about wanting to continue using my Dior frames. She showed me a chart breaking down the different lens options. I REALLY liked this, because I rarely understand the breakdown of what I'm paying for at an eye doctor. My experience with Coco's vision turned out to be bad. I DEFINITELY DONT RECOMMEND this place. At the beginning everything was nice, I came to check my eyes and get glasses, so the doctor by the name Robert Mintz (idk if I wrote it correctly) took care of me, after that I have chosen a frame and lenses for glasses. They said its gonna take about 4 days to get my glasses ready. I paid 110$ which was very cheap. Yes their prices are very cheap BUT THIS IS A TRICK, beleive me, they don't do their job in proper way. Their customer service is HORRIBLE, I mean there is NO customer service at all. Here is a continue to my story: after 4 days I got a message that my glasses are ready so I went to pick them up. I was wearing contacts at that moment so I couldn't check my glasses at the store. In the evening that day I tried my new glasses on, OMG I didn't see anything at all. I was feeling like the lenses inside where just zero, like no lenses in the glasses. I don't know whose fault it was exactly, either their doctor who was checking my eyes and probably didn't do a good job or the person who is putting lenses inside of frame-maybe he mixed it up and by mistake put me different lenses. Nobody knows what happened. So the next thing I do - I go back to the store (it was on Saturday August 25th) I see the girl who is working there was different that day. Her name is LINDA. I explained a situation to her and she said: "You need to go see a doctor again but there is a line right now so you have to wait at least 30 min". I was shocked in that situation when it was their fault that they messed up my glasses for which I already paid and now I have to wait to see a doctor. I asked her if I can go first and not wait in the line. She said : NO. She didn't say any sorry, no apologies at all. She told me I can come in on Monday when its gonna be a different doctor. I said ok. I came in on Monday around 12pm, I see that girl LINDA again. I said I came to see a doctor, on what she said that on Mondays doctor is coming only in the evening. I said why she couldn't tell me this information before when I came on Saturday. I said how many times I supposed to come here to get my glasses finally fixed??? I was already loosing my patience with all this fucked up situation, when she said: "WELL, ITS NOT MY PROBLEM" Excuse me??? I also work in the customer service and I know how this situations should be handled. And its definitely not the right way. LINDA didn't have an idea how to work and talk correctly to customers. She didn't even try to help me solve the problem and give any good solution or right direction. She was mean and has a bad attitude. After all that I didn't have any choice as to ask for the refund and left that store with very bad feelings. Most of the reviews here are fake, so be careful guys. Omg , these people are super nice! I went in with a living social deal and i had misinterpreted the deal. What would of at most places left me feeling like i had wasted my time and money, was the opposite here! Not only did the woman who worked there let me use my deal towards a pair of sunglasses (which by no means was mentioned by the deal), she also gave my bf a FREE eye exam AND let me keep my deal so I can gift it to some one who might need it !!!!!!!!! Had a nice experience at Coco's Vision 2 weeks ago. I was the jerk who slept on and his glasses right before he's going on vacation, so I was in a bit of a pickle because I needed an exam, new contacts, and replacement frames with lenses, and I was leaving for Cali in a week. The Groupon voucher was $40 TOTAL for the glasses/contacts eye exam combo, plus $200 TOWARD frames. Found frames I looked at for $199 (score!) so I was disappointed when I found myself paying a couple hundred more $ for the lens themselves to be made and fitted.... just buyers should be aware that those $30-50 everything-included Groupons will likely require more money to get the final product made. So ok, all this being said, the people that work there are simply the best. Lisa handled me as a customer in a very professional and warm fashion, and the eye exam doctor was equally terrific. Got two pairs of glasses for a decent amount. They were very nice and they have good quality frames/glasses. It's important to have great quality frames because they need to last a couple of years. I like how I have a year worth of insurance on them as well so if anything goes wrong I get replacement lenses no questions asked. Would recommend to family and friends/co-workers. I bought the $ 43 groupon which gets you a contact lens fitting/exam and $ 200 credit towards glasses (frame and lenses). Doctor changed my prescription slightly, said my left eye was being over corrected, and he also changed the diameter on my contacts so they won't grip the eye as much, he said they would feel less dry at end of day. So far, they have been about the same as before, which is fine as they weren't really that dry before anyway. I became a customer of this shop because of a Groupon deal, and it was a great decision. It's one of those places you wouldn't think you'd go into or be a fan of because it isn't "main-stream" but I thinking, "eh... $50 Groupon for an exam and a pair of glasses... who cares what it's like" When I arrived, I was greeted warmly and was helped very thoroughly with the different glasses I was able to choose from. I would give I-sight 5 stars if there was a little bit more of a selection, but I ended up finding a really great pair despite that. All the glasses are encased, so the friendly assistant, Lisa, had to retrieve each pair, which wasn't annoying and she didn't seem to mind pulling out what seemed like 50 pairs to try on. She even suggested a few pairs too. After finally deciding a good pair, she went through all the options of lenses that I could purchase explained their merits. It's easy for me to fall for an up-sell since the coupon was a great deal and to paying a little extra for high-end scratch free and shatter proof lenses is just a smart investment. After I picked out my glasses I had a quick and easy exam with their doctor and all was said and done. My glasses will be ready in 5 days (it's a holiday weekend, so that's a reasonable wait) and I can't wait to get them. A good bonus is that Lisa said I could come back and get new lenses for my current frames for a discount. I love my current frames, but the lenses are really old and need an update, but I've been hesitant because other places, lens crafters and eye masters are too expensive ($300 range). But she is going to do it for me for much cheaper. So I'll be able to keep my current frames and have a new pair to wear to. You have to love what you buy when you go for glasses because they are on your face EVERYDAY! And I felt that when I was there. I highly recommend this place and am very pleased. I went to Designer Optical on a whim. I was walking towards my usual optometrist at Cohens two blocks up, but thought to try this new business since it was closer. I was seen immediately. The staff was friendly and professional, the office clean and conveniently located on the corner or Broadway and Steinway (2 min or less from the Steinway subway stop) and Dr Mintz, the optometrist, professional and personable. They take all major insurance companies and are reasonable priced. It was my first time getting contacts and the Dr and staff spent 20 minutes showing me how to put them in and remove them, instructing me on care and upkeep. I recommend this office and Dr. Mintz to anyone looking for eye care in the Astoria/LIC neighborhood! It's good to support small local businesses like Designer Optical! read more
