My friend had her bridal gown and bridesmaids dresses made here and the finished products were pretty nice. After several (4?) fittings over the course of 6 months the gowns were ready for the big day. When we pulled out the package of pressed dresses in Newport, OR (several hours away) on the day of the wedding, to the bride's shock and horror the maid of honor's dress (mine) was missing. The bride nearly had a heart attack. It was too late to have the dress brought out for the ceremony that was just over an hour away. The shuttle driver at the venue bailed us out of the situation by lending me a dress she had that was similar in color to the bridesmaid's dresses and it all worked out in the end, but it definitely put a small damper on my friend's big day! I'm pretty sure Sovan apologized to the bride and maybe even refunded the cost of one of the dresses to her, but that didn't help me! After going to the shop 4 times (driving down from Seattle) and having to find parking in that area all of those times, I came out of it all with nothing to show for. :( read more

I already knew that I was going to go to Cocoon Silk for my wedding dress, because they did such a fantastic job on my last dress (for my brother's wedding). And I was right - Sovann was able to create a perfectly tailored and absolutely beautiful, unique dress. I came in with just a few photos of what I wanted (tea length, 1950s-ish), and all he needed were measurements and fabric choices. A few months later, voila! I had several fittings while we tweaked the details, found the right bra, etc, and each time we'd talk about what still needed to be done, what I thought about doing X, etc etc. I was definitely part of the process, which I appreciated. I was so pleased with the beautiful dress made for me. I hadn't considered doing a custom dress for our wedding, because I thought it would be well beyond the reach of our budget and so was happily perusing BHLDN reception dresses and the various bridal charity resale chops. A family friend recommended this shop. Cocoon Silk was able to make my dream come true of a tea-length flowing dress that went from beach to square dancing (and for under $1,000, all alterations included). While I can't speak to anyone else's experience, it is important to note that this is a small shop where appointments are essential if you want to guarantee personal attention. I started by wandering to take a look at their creations on a weekend, and then set up an appointment to come back and meet with Sovann and company for an hour to bring in some pictures and discuss ideas and prices (this was probably March/April). After that we had another meeting or two before the dress was made, and then two alterations in July/August before the dress was ready in late August. Let me just say that this place RULES!!!! I'm going to start this review from back in January when I had 6 appointments scheduled to try on dresses and this place was my first stop. I was definitely skeptical because having a dress made from scratch sounded expensive and I really didn't have any ideas when it came to the kind of dress I wanted. My mom and I saw a sample dress hanging up, I tried it on and LOVED it!!! It was absolute perfection. They made me the same dress to fit me perfectly BUT over the next 7 months (and lots of alteration appointments) I lost 40 pounds and all of a sudden, the dress I was originally in love with was no longer the dress I wanted to wear on my wedding day. Keep in mind, this is all happening a month and a half before the big day. They got me in the next day, we talked about different styles and what I wanted, they took my measurements, drew detailed pictures, talked about different materials, and even though they didn't have very much time at all, they made miracles happen!! My dress was absolute perfection in every sense of the word!! It was exactly what we discussed, and in the end.. I still paid so much less then I would have at any other wedding dress store and I had a CUSTOM made dress just for me. The whole experience from start to finish was fantastic, the people who work there.. the location..the atmosphere.. everything!!My wedding was a few weeks ago and I still have friends talking about how beautiful my dress was. I love this shop and the people who work here! I got my wedding dress altered here after a recommendation from a friend. She had her husband's wedding suit custom made here. They did an impeccable job on my dress and I could not have been happier! I have a couple friends getting married this year so I sang the praises of Cocoon Silk and they both are getting their dresses done here as well. They even worked with my friend to custom make her dream dress a month before her wedding after seeing a top she liked better than hers in their store. They are willing to do what they can to work within your budget. It's very important to them that you have the dress you need in order to make your special day even more perfect. I wish I had done more through research into Cocoon Silk's actual reputation prior vs their inflated Facebook Reviews. I fell into their horrific trap (as shared by many on other websites) of over promising and beyond under delivering - to the point of not having my wedding dress on my wedding day. The short of it is I paid in full and they disappeared and lied throughout the process, the long of it is worth reading if you are even thinking about having them ruin your wedding day. I started my process with Cocoon Silk one year and 3 months before my wedding, allowing ample time for them not to be pressured. We discussed in great detail my options and expectations and being assured of the reasonable and easy process it would be; at this time I put down a 50% deposit to help them order any fabrics they needed and get started. I'm sad to say, nothing went right after that. They immediately stopped being responsive to my messages regarding my first fitting, even though I was reaching out in the time frame they requested. When I did finally reach them to schedule, I knew something was wrong as I suddenly was getting questions about what my dress was supposed to look like so they could 'make sure they had the right one when I came in'. Instead, they hadn't even started and instead whipped up some random dress prior to my fitting based on my basic description I had given to help them find my dress for the fitting. Not a single element was right: wrong shape, wrong seams, wrong fabric. I didn't get upset as it was still early in the process and they promised to remake the correct dress and have it ready for a new fitting in only two days - which they did do, though it was very basic and held together by pins. My next fitting takes just as long to schedule and the dress has barely changed. Months pass and it's supposed to be ready for the next fitting and my mom has decided to have them make her 'Mother of the Bride' dress as well. The dress is still mostly unfinished though has progressed a bit. To be fair, it was fitting well, and in the right fabric, but such limited progress had been made for how many months it had been. They measured up my mom and had her pay in full for her dress and requested the remaining payment for my dress, this is about 9 months before my wedding at this point. In March, COVID really starts to shut down Portland. I start to reach out to them in April as I wanted to check in on their wellbeing and also understand how this may impact fittings and the final steps. I tried calling, emailing, and messaging them on Facebook. I tried this for months, no exaggeration, with no response. With 4 months to my wedding, they finally respond stating that they got stuck out of the country with flight restrictions during COVID and gave me a specific date (2 weeks from the message) they would be back and that it was no problem. I was extremely sympathetic as I understand things are very difficult and despite all the challenges, I still want to work with them. The date they said the would be back came and went with no communication. I started reaching out again over and over with no response. With only 2.5 months to go from my October wedding, I am left with no choice but to start to file a chargeback with my bank. Suddenly they are responding to my messages once the bank contacts them. Immediately telling me they will be back AGAIN on a specific date. They promised to refund me if they weren't back in time but promised they would be. At this point it was too late, I had to continue to pursue the chargeback as I now had to scramble to find a dress at a shop and hope they had it in my size in stock as there was no time to have anything ordered. Same for my mother and her dress. It should come as no surprise they never contacted me about being back in town and their store has been emptied. We gave them 60 days to do the right thing in the end, per their own promises, and they never did. Thank goodness Visa was willing to work with us to get our money back as I then had to shell out for a second wedding dress and give up on the dream they promised me. Save yourself the heartache. DO NOT DO ANY BUSINESS WITH COCOON SILK FOR ANY REASON. read more

I'm a photographer who did some work for Cocoon Silk in March. Payment was to be two custom jackets. I shot the clothing twice because Savon didn't show up the first time to tell me what he wanted (nor did he cancel so I showed up and shot) and after putting about 50 hours into processing them he wasn't happy. Because I wanted him to be satisfied with the work I gave him I offered to reshoot with him there. I did that and put another 50 or so hours into processing. I built backgrounds and inserted the clothing into them and did a lot of other work to make the dresses and suits look good. Savon accepted the work and I gave him a release. Measurements were taken and I was told that I would have my jackets in two weeks. After about 4 months, during which time all my efforts at contact were ignored, I did get a fitting on two jackets that fit so badly I could hardly get them on. I was told that alterations would be made and I would have them in a week. That was in July and I'm still waiting and have heard nothing from him. I have given up all hope of ever getting them. read more

The staff at Cocoon silk and their dresses are amazing. They helped me create the perfect wedding dress and it was much more affordable than at normal retail stores. They did not charge any additional for alterations and worked on it until it was perfect. They also made the most gorgeous and reasonably priced bridesmaid dresses and dealt with my bridal party being spread across the country and only able to come into the store for final alterations right before the wedding. They made ties for all of the groomsmen that were very nice, matched the girls, and again were very reasonably priced. My mother flew in from Texas just to have her dress made because our experience had been so good. Her dress was gorgeous! I trust Sovann explicitly. He knows exactly what will look good on each person and really makes sure each dress is individual and made to be flattering. His styles are unique and gorgeous. I received so many compliments on my dress and I was comfortable all night. The girls in my bridal party will be more likely to keep and wear their dresses again. Great experience! I can't wait for an excuse to have another dress made. read more

I have debated for months about writing this review but I just want to share my experience. After reading the reviews on Yelp I went in to have my wedding dress made. I was impressed by his professionalism and he really seemed to know what he was talking about. We had a great appointment designing my gown, I brought in pictures of a bunch of different dresses I liked and we put together elements from all of them to create something really unique. Then I waited 6 weeks to see the initial dress. At that first fitting it was clear that something was way off. The dress was nothing like we had talked about. It was the wrong color, too short(which can't be fixed), the belt hit me at the wrong spot, and so much more. I was very upset and ended up deciding to try to find something somewhere else, with just 3 weeks until my wedding. He was very mean and cruel to me when I tried to get my money back. After many tears I ended up paying him $300 for nothing but wasted time. In the end I cobbled together a wedding look with help from a friend but it wasn't what it could have been. I can only speak to my experience but I wonder if they are better at copying dresses vs creating something from scratch? That's the only way I can understand my experience. I gave him 2 stars because there are beautiful gowns in the shop, so if you are able to find one that is already made this would probably work just fine. read more

Great place and great experience! You would think it costs an arm and a leg to get a custom dress made, but in actuality it's not and the fit is like a glove for your body. Souvann is an amazing, creative guy. He's so nice and his space is so inviting. I had a custom Vietnamese/Chinese Engagement dress made from him. All I had to do was explain my vision and he knew what to do. He added a modern flair and gave excellent non pushy feedback on design ideas that had my best interest in mind. I'm also getting my wedding dress altered and he's making me a sash! There's nothing he can't do! He uses the finest materials from Cambodia! The silk and lace are beautiful and eloquent. I would recommend getting any occasion dress custom designed and fit to your liking. As long as you have about 1 to 2 months, he can make it! read more

Unfortunately, I agree with many negative reveiws. I came to my first appointment people were very friendly, appeared knowledgeable, people working there convinced me that they are capable of making a dress for me. I choose a dress they already had and all they had to do are only few minor changes. I was told that dress would be cleaned and pressed and ready for my big day. A week before my wedding I picked up my dress. Things that I was told will be done were not done. The dress wasn't even cleaned, alterations were not done, and other things that they keep promising were not completed. Not to ruin my day I decided not to go back and work with what I got. I took the dress to my regular dry cleaning and they informed me that they are not able to clean clean it because crystals are falling off and most of them are lost. I decided that this will not stop me and glue them back myself after cleaning it. On the wedding day, an hour into the wedding under skirt was comming apart. My sister in-law is designer, she made her own dress for her wedding, worked and still work in the industry. Told me that my under skirt should never had cime apart. The next day my friend told me that part of my skirt was off color and did not match the rest of the dress. Please do not use this vender if you want your wedding day and memores of this big day be perfect. read more

While this company gives the illusion of professionalism and high quality service I must say they certainly don't deliver. I ordered my wedding dress from Cocoon Silk. I chose the color and material I wanted my dress to be. I was very clear that I only wanted pure white for my color. Not ivory or any other off white color. When I arrived to my first dress fitting I noticed the dress was clearly ivory and not the color I had selected. It was too late to change things as I had already paid them and the wedding was only a few months away. I also ordered with them a veil which I was originally told was $90. They later called and informed me that the veil would be a bit more. It went up to $110. When I arrived to pick up the dress and veil one week before the wedding the price had gone up to $120. A bit strange they kept upping the price on me. Not only that but it was much longer than I had requested it to be. Too late to change that too... The dress did fit well and I was able to wear it for the first part of my wedding. However, after only a few hours of getting to wear my wedding dress the zipper split and I was forced to change for the rest of the day. Not only that but the stitching started coming loose as the day went by due to very poor sewing skills. They cut so many corners when putting the dress together that it pretty much fell apart and I didn't even get to wear it all through my wedding day. All in all I highly reccomend you look elsewhere for your wedding dress needs as you will be very disappointed in the quality you will recieve here. read more

While I don't have a finished product, I can absolutely say that the service and quality of workmanship at this store is impeccable. While visiting Portland from N.C. I ran across this store as I eye was drawn to the most beautiful mother of the bride dress. I had been searching for months and was just 5 1/2 weeks away from the wedding. Sovanna clearly is an artist. He measured me, made changes with my concerns (sleeveless) on the dress that I could not get my big toe in as it was a size 4. I was due to travel to one more city and he let me know if I contacted him by the end of the next week he could have it done. Essentially, I got cold feet with never having the dress on and not being in town for alterations if needed. No doubt if I had found him earlier in this process I would have felt more comfortable. The price for the quality of fabric and workmanship is tremendous. Honestly, no reason for a bride or mother of the bride to go elsewhere. Just wished I lived closer or had visited here sooner! read more
